But that's where the problem between Dan and Dave and HBO comes to play. They wanted 70 episodes, HBO wanted 8 seasons. Maybe even 80. So they compromised by having the last two seasons being shorter than the rest.

Winterfell and Littlefinger being killed was horrible, Cersie and Kings landing had little to do and Cersei should have lost the game shortly after her wildfire stunt. And then the white walkers barely being shown...until Danys plotline pushes her to beyond the wall stupidly...to give the night king the dragon.

@MrGohtrunks
@MrGohtrunks 6 лет назад
Telling what is going to happen and reading it in a fully written book is very different from each other. I'm only now half way through A Storm of Swords and it is fun to see what storylines they kept, disbanded, but mostly what little details they changed. But one thing is clear, the books have been a hefty guideline for D&D. Season 7 wasn't on par with others, it needed more time to develop its plotlines so they could've worked better (except for the Daenerys and Benjen rescue, that should'v e been scrapped altogether). More episodes were needed, but that meant an even longer time for shooting and post-production. I get the dilemma for D&D and HBO. They don't want us to wait an enternity either, but by now GOT has gotten into movie-scale production times. I think one extra season of another seven episodes would've worked better, having nine seasons in the end.
@AliceDiableaux
@AliceDiableaux 6 лет назад
The biggest problem this season and the biggest tell that they didn't have the books to go off was just the abandonment of realism and the reliance on stupid tropes. I haven't read the books myself (yet) but that was what made the first seasons so great; actions have realistic consequences. You fuck up in a life or death situation? You die. You need to go to the other side of the continent? Better prepare for weeks of travel. All that went out the window when D&D had to actually think for themselves for once to come up with a plot and overarching story for the season. They're very good at adapting, not so much coming up with their own stories.

Seriously, though, repeat after me, Peter Baelish: "I demand a Trial By Combat." And seriously, the instant Bran said "Chaos is a ladder' that was the moment to take the knights of the vale and return to the vale, leaving Sansa in charge.
@JeffreyHeesch
@JeffreyHeesch 6 лет назад
It was really weird how Bran didn't look far enough into it to know Rhaegar & Leanna got married. She even says Jon's name is "Targaryen" on her death bed, which he was definitely there for. It's like he saw that little glimpse and was like "yeah, I got the gist of it, whatever." No, that's not how it goes. He eagerly wanted to know everything about what was going on at the Tower of Joy in season 6. He's not going to just drop it. The only rational explanation is that the Weirwood net is basically Wikipedia, so he got sidetracked looking up comparisons for the airspeed velocity of unladen swallows from Africa and Europe, opened up way too many tabs, and eventually forgot all about where he started.
@kevinw712

plus then when Sam adds "no, I saw a man's diary where he talks about properly wedding them", and Bran goes "Are you certain?" WTF?? RW2996 but genetically there is a ton of reason why they shouldn't be together lmao there's a reason why incest is frowned upon and it has nothing to do with emotions.
@RW2996
@RW2996 6 лет назад
mimiHTcat Im sure there are plenty of reasons genetically. But 1:They dont know their related and have no family attachment. Just like when you go to a bar or club. You see a woman you like, im sure you're not worried about whether she might be related to you. And you dont make plans to get a genetic test to make sure before you have sex with her. 2: Though i dont condone it, related people having sexual relations with each other only has repercussions if they intend to have children. And if you dont have a family connection other than blood, then you may not think of a person as family. I have half siblings ive never met. I wouldnt have sex with them. But i have friends i consider family more than my half siblings. So yea, emotions do have something to do with our decisions. Whether the decision is good or bad.

I don't like Jonsa or Jonerys but if you're talking about BIOLOGICALLY what's more incestuous, it's aunt/nephew. Basic science and a simple google search away. And that's not even taking into account Dany already being 75% inbred with Targ DNA (which actually makes their incest worse). Anyways why are the writers so insistent on making Jon's romantic life such a huge part of the narrative? Jon/Dany's romance irked me just because of how much screen time it wasted. The season was already so short, we really didn't have any time to waste and yet the writers still managed. It was such an unnecessary subplot that added nothing meaningful to the story.
@d.devins9728
@d.devins9728 6 лет назад
youre an ididot if you think theire relationship added nothing meaningful to the story. I cant disagree with this opinion anymore. all this "whats more incestuous" is fucking stupid, nobody gives a shit, its fiction, theyre targeyens, they have special blood. Romance is a part of the story, especially in fantasy, get poverty it, youre not too cool for it, its not "gay" him and dany feeling like loners is a huge part of their characters. it wasn't wasted time at all, its vital to the story and youre a moron if you didn't see it coming. its there for a reason, its not your damn story to tell
@candace200
@candace200 5 лет назад
Also, besides it being meaningful to their character development...Dany getting love after swearing it off and keeping it only for an alliance and not believing she would find great love again...same for Jon really but the love also makes them stronger and weaker at the same time...there is also the fact that love has been a central theme of GOT from the beginning. It is a story about people and being human and a political drama way before it is a fantasy world with dragons and zombies, pirates and witches. Martin and the show writers have always said as much. On a side note, a simple google search shows that cousins and aunt/nephew relations are not statistically as bad as you're making it out. The Stark blood may be different and foreign enough that it wouldn't matter that much. It is actually pretty standard to marry within first cousins and uncle niece still across the globe. Context for the time period is also important to take into account.

I think the people are lucky Dany didn't fry all the men left over from the battle. That is what a real totalitarian would do. She isn't a true conqueror because at the very least gives them a chance and it just isn't logistically realistic for her to take prisoners. She burned two men to make a point and the rest caved. This was honestly a smart decision. To date, Dany has only burned people who betrayed her or were a direct threat not those that question her. Screw 'em. Give 'em an inch and see what they do with it. If they betray you, cut 'em off. Otherwise she is good to her people. Lots of love equal to the same amount of demanded respect. She has high expectations is all.

@nerd soup Like you said Tyrion is good at playing the game but they are trying to break the game so he is out of his element. The wheel is designed to maintain the status quo which is exactly what Dany is trying to change. So he is good at revolutions, he is good at ruling and manipulating. Although he read war books he was never good at war either his brother bronn or father have always saved him they aren't dumbing him down just not making him as overpowered as his counterparts.

“I don’t think they’d ruin Jaime’s redemption arc.” Neither did I.
@twstf8905
@twstf8905 4 года назад
They didn't. Jaime never HAD a "redemption arc." It's just a perspective borne out of our reaction to seeing a morally gray character. He's never been a "bad guy" or a "good guy." Those cliché's were reserved for characters like Ned Stark and Joffrey Baratheon. Ramsey Snow, (or "Bolton") is the closest thing to an "antagonist" just from being a horrible person as this show gets. And, Ned Stark is the closest thing to a "protagonist" from being a good person. Everyone else is swimming around in that "gray area" of the story's main flow, rather than spending any significant amount of time in either the "good guy" or "bad guy" tributary. People have been misinterpreting Jaime's whole arc ever since he was originally portrayed as a villain. But, if you think back you'll see that, besides being in love with his twin sister, there hasn't been anything he's done that we can't empathize with, when we see things from his point of view. Catch me banging my twin sister, who happens to be the wife of the King, and I'm pushing that kid out the window, too lol even Eddard Stark lied to everyone he loved, especially his wife, for DECADES just to keep his promise and protect his sister's child. Even Jaime killing his cousin is somewhat understandable when you consider that's the only way he could escape from Robb's encampment prisoner cells. No. There IS no "redemption arc" because he's never needed redemption. Put yourself in his shoes and virtually ALL of his decisions make sense. We all WANT him to be a "good guy" because his enemies have been our heroes this whole time, making him a "bad guy" by default. We project our expectations onto the story, and the characters within it, and then we're suddenly surprised when things don't happen PRECISELY that way lol disappointment is a result of our expectations, NOT the story itself. It is what it is, and nobody but the author has "ownership" over it. The beauty of George R.R. Martin's writing is that everyone can be a protagonist if you just step in to their perspective long enough. And, no amount of whining or complaining is going to change what happened. It's not like GRR Martin is going to stumble upon someone's RU-vid comment and alter his opus because the comment is clever or witty enough.

This season was very disappointing unfortunately. However there were still some amazing parts. The dothraki attacking the lannisters was amazing. When Daenarys came flying in on Drogon with the music, it almost had me tearing up and definitely gave me goosebumps. But, the season had some shitty plot points and became too predictable/"hollywood". Too scared to kill people off. When they went past the wall to get one of the undead, so many more people should have died. That whole plan was stupid anyways but that's besides the point. Also, I think it lacked shock value. What do you guys think? I thought it would have been great if Cersei had the mountain kill Jaime during that scene. It would have made my jaw drop almost like Ned's death or the red wedding. On the other hand I love Jaime as a character and want to see him join up to fight in the north. I just think for the circumstances, really no main characters died this season. The shock value was one of the main reasons GoT became my favourite show.
@alex-sv8ru
@alex-sv8ru 6 лет назад
praaaaaallly I really think the Daenerys' Dothraki Army is just stupid. The dothraki aren't an army and they follow Khals... Very strong warriors. Not pretty princesses that want a golden crown. Why would the Dothraki even come to Westeros and leave their homeland in the process? To follow some fire resistant women who burned the Dosh Kaleen (an important Dothraki site).. For all they know she could be a witch, Dothraki culture forbids all magic.

bob bill I agree to an extent. I really like Jaime, but I feel like it would have been one of those crazy jaw dropping moments the show is known for. This season was really lacking that. For instance, Tormund could have died past the wall. He's one of my favourites but it's GoT, people we love die left and right.
@praaaaaallly
@praaaaaallly 6 лет назад
Amin Esmailzadeh I agree with you. That's actually what I mean by "shock value", I just explained it poorly and didn't use enough words to explain myself. Obviously I don't want them to kill people off just to kill people off. Obviously do the killings around the plot. But yes, it is mid war and no main characters die? Like come on. There were a few points where I kind of rolled my eyes and it felt so bullshit that everyone survived unscathed. For instance, the spoils of war episode when Jaime goes after Daenerys and Bron jumps in to save him and they both live? Like nothing happened? 1. Jaime should have died in the attempt. 2. Bron should have died in the attempt or have been severely injured by drogon's fire, 3. They should've been captured by Daenarys after the battle. No way they get out of there unseen. And the whole beyond the wall scene where Tormund is overwhelmed, or when Jon goes and starts killing the undead to look bad ass in front of Daenarys when he should have just got on Drogon. IMO it's just bad "hollywood" writing.

1st of all congratulations to the winners of the contest! Especially The God Damn Batman, you're screen name made me laugh for almost a whole ten minutes. I love the channel and the reviews, but personally I can't critic GoT like I can a lot of other television series and movies, I'm just happy I get to spend time with these characters and this amazing world that has been created for us to watch, experience and enjoy. Not to put down anyone who is capable of criticizing the series, I'm sure you love the show just as much as I do. With that said I'm actually looking forward to the end of the series, very few things have ever been able to hold my attention, engage my imagination and flood my memory banks with so much fictional information as this show and I'm ready for it to be over. I'm glad it's a show that knows when to call it quits and isn't going to over stay it's welcome and I'll be savoring each and every episode of this upcoming last season like it's the last bites of a 5 star dining experience.

Great video as always! You guys make some very valid points regarding the storytelling issues plaguing this latest season, many of which were carried over from seasons 5 & 6. There are points you make I very much agree with (Arya/Sansa/Littlefinger, the marginalizing/dumbing down of certain characters, lack of consequences, stupid conveniences and illogical decisions/situations, egregious abuse of time and location hopping, pacing, etc.) and many points where I disagree (although of course the validity of said points is not at all contingent on whether or not I personally agree with them). I haven't been as critical of season 7 as others (Season 5 is still the weakest for me personally) and honestly, I really liked the season despite its' problems. And I adored the finale, flaws and all. It's definitely in my top 3 S7 episodes along with "The Queen's Justice" & "The Spoils of War". In fact, I thought the season was more or less on the same level as Season 6, while still falling far short of the caliber of seasons 1-4, post Season 4 being when the series started to dip in quality for various reasons. As far as I'm concerned the first four episodes of this season were pure gold, efficient while still retaining the show's trademark of solid story/character development. In fact, if the quality of those first four episodes had sustained through the rest of the season, S7 would've surpassed S6. It really wasn't until we got to E5 and E6 that things started to go a bit wrong. However we really could've used one or two more episodes this season to really flesh things out. So many characters and storylines were either pushed to the sidelines, rushed or insufficiently developed. I loved the Jon/Dany romance. I actually thought it was effective and believable, mostly because the scenes devoted to them were very well written/acted and true to both characters, and their overall storyline was the most well developed of the entire season. It wasn't forced/rushed and for me the characters absolutely had chemistry, it just wasn't the openly flirtatious and playful kind of romantic chemistry that Jon & Ygritte displayed. Such a dynamic wouldn't be appropriate for Jon & Dany, given the characters respective personalities and the context in which their love develops (the boat scene was my favorite moment of E6; Romantic and poignant). Their chemistry is reserved, weighty and dare I say "bittersweet". It's a relationship built on commonalities rather than differences. And for me, one is just as compelling as the other, if done well of course. But I understand people being more partial to the Jon & Ygritte type of chemistry, given that it tends to be more fun to watch on screen than the more melancholy chemistry we got with Jon & Dany. Most of the problems this season can be attributed to the limited time availability given the shorter episode count and the writing of D&D, while still occasionally brilliant even in the most problematic episodes, showcases prioritizing the reaching of big plot points at the expense of characterization and sufficient story build up. In conclusion, I'm not some blind fanboy GoT apologist, I fully acknowledge the problems present in season 7 and the series overall post season 4. However, in my humble opinion, it still more or less works. The series is still very good and has not betrayed it's spirit, ergo it has not devolved into totally conventional by the numbers high fantasy. D&D simply need to take a more patient and nuanced approach to their storytelling that's logical and thoughtfully develops character, theme and plot. And they really need to do away with excessive fan pandering, testing audiences patience with constantly putting characters in danger then lazily getting them out of danger (almost consequence free) through plot contrivance which deflates all tension, and over-reliance on spectacle.

I think you're plum wrong about Jon and Dany. I think the romantic aspects they share are alluded to from the beginning. We have Davos noticing that Jon is hella noticing Dany, which given his innate stoic and honourable nature says something. Jon's response is that there's no time for that. After his near-death north of the wall, I think he seriously reconsiders that factor. For Dany, I think it's a slower turn. It's a sum of things, like seeing both Jon's bravery face-to-face with Drogon and Drogon's acceptance of Jon; when she turns to Jon for council out of frustration he doesn't try and play for personal advantage, but speaks to her goals; the fact that Jon denies several times that he died because he did what he believed was right; the fact that he immediately seeks to go North himself because he is best suited; his rushing of the Night King. The critical moment, I think, is when Dany looks down at Jon's scars. She doesn't see someone like her brother, grasping at the throne, or like Cersei, sending others to do their dirty work. She sees, finally, incontrovertible proof that he sacrifices willingly, and without reservation. From the moment she met him, Jon did not boast. When Dany speaks of her faith in herself, it is Davos, not Jon that speaks in turn, because Jon inspired that in Davos, and it is Jon who silences Davos, because Jon doesn't boast of his achievements but lingers in his failures. When Jon receives word that his sister is alive, it is a reminder of Dany's own lost family, but it also shows the pain that Jon feels. He is never anything but honest with Dany, never anything but frank. And when Jon refuses to make a false promise, and declares he's pledged his loyalty to Dany, and their conversation afterward, where Jon, now allied with Dany doesn't speak to her as a political counter part, but as a person, all adds up to Dany falling for Jon Snow. As for the Sansa/Littlefinger dynamic? Sansa does play the game with Littlefinger. But she's far more direct and ruthless. Littlefinger is a sadist. He enjoys seeing the suffering of those he hates or thinks his lessers. He loves lording over people without them ever knowing it. Sansa savours only one thing: victory. And so she doesn't string him along with some complex plot, but with just enough to get him in the room, unable to escape. And then she kills him. She removes the threat he poses.

i said the BOOKS are an anti-war story. GRRM is fervently against war, and he portrays violence and war in his stories, no matter who is involved, negatively and having great consequences. it's basically the whole point of the series. sometimes, i feel the show fails in this regard as it sometimes paints violence as being cool or badass or the characters involved don't face consequences.

This season was very disappointing. It's been obvious ever since season 4 ended that the writing had gone downhill but after season 7 it has hit a new low. Game of Thrones is a show that is so great because it defies the tropes of fantasy genre, had so much unpredictability and used every single bit of violence for character development. All of that is gone and as a huge Game of Thrones fan it really hurts. There was some good political intrigue this season but nowhere near the amount or greatness of the earlier seasons. Honestly up till episode 4 the season was looking fine. There was a decent amount of political intrigue and powerful reunions. The Spoils of War also has to be one of the best episodes ever in Game of Thrones, those last 20 minutes were honestly masterful and I remember feeling so tense during it and really fearing for Jaime. It was until after episode 5 where things started to really go downhill, starting with the plan to capture the white walkers. I honestly thought this plan was awful from the start and that was shown in the next episode "Beyond the Wall". Now watching this episode was initially very entertaining, but once I thought about it more and more and more, it really started to pain me how bad it really was. Also the pacing is just completely all over the place. Why on earth are HBO in such a hurry to get the job done. The character development this season is very underwhelming. The whole Arya/Sansa/Baelish thing feels so unnatural and just written for the sake of it. Then the way it was handled was terrible, I honestly cringe just thinking of that subplot and the way it ended. The romance between Jon and Daenerys feels so forced with 0 chemistry and development. I don't buy it at all. Honestly if I had to rate season 7 of Game of Thrones, it would get a 6/10. And wow it hurts me so much saying that.
@alex-sv8ru

Ishan Rosha I agree, all of the characters this season are just plain horrible, though. For example, when i read the books i see Arya as a young girl constantly being made fun of and hated, i see her as a young girl that's thrown into a horrible situation and she must adapt and survive or die. But now when i watch the TV show now i see Arya as an annoying unkillable little brat, with unfair god like swordsmanship.

Sansa, Littlefinger, and Brienne haven't even seen the White Walkers, and Arya probably hasn't even heard of them before. As a matter of fact, there's really only like a small handful of people at Winterfell who have. Most of whom aren't even there any more; Tormund, who went back to Eastwatch, Dolorous Edd, who never even left Castle Black, etc. I think, as of season 7 episode 7, the only people at Winterfell, besides Jon, who have first-hand experience with the threat of the Night King and the Army of the Dead are; Sam and Gilly, (and baby Sam lol,) and Bran and Meera. And if we've learned nothing else, we've learned that; that particular threat is one that needs to be seen to be believed. That's why they actually brought a Whyte down to King's Landing, to try to convince Cersei it's real. Jon has tried making it clear to Sansa what they're up against, but until she actually sees them in person, she's going to hold Cersei up as the primary enemy. And Arya probably hasn't even heard of the Night King lol

These reviews are so hilarious. And insightful. The animations so funny! Glad this popped up on my recommendations. And yeah I agree Season 7 was so underwhelming. I get it that they need to finish this because of the actors aging, but at the same time, there is enough content in the books to have made this like 14 seasons, not 8. If Netflix would have done this they’d spread it our over more seasons.

My season 7 biggest question what's with all the time warps? (In my best Seinfeld impression)

"What's the deal with all the time warps? I mean we go back, we see Rhaegar Targaryen, we knew it was going to happen. He's does, she does, bada bing, they're marrieeeeed."

Jerry C relax, man. It was a joke statement. But yeah I did miss some of the exposition that came with the extra scenes that showed characters traveling between destinations. This last season seemed rushed and the fewer episodes didn't help. It is still ok to have my own opinion and express it, right? I mean that is why we all tuned in right, to listen to Beau and Aaron express theirs.

CaptAssassin Well to be fair they have always done fast time skips but it just seems that people forgot about them. In season 1 Robert and the lannisters are in kings landing and in the same episode just a few minutes later their all in Winterfell, the direwolves are pups in episode 1 and the next episode they're already as big as dogs, plus when Jon Snow is saying goodbye to his family to head to the wall he's at winterfell one moment and in between 10-15 minutes we already see him at the wall. I feel like people complain way to much about time skipping than necessary honestly

Jodie Thrones its not that they dont show the time its that they dont acknowledge the passing of time. With the wolves grown we can see that time has passed and cercei says that they travelled for a month. In season 7 they Just appear where they are needed without showing that it took time to get there.

In season 1, episode 1 Jaime and Cersei are talking in Kings landing, in the next scene they are arriving at Winterfell. Some scenes are months apart, some only days, and others minutes. GRMM even says this in the first pages of every book. For the sake of story telling, the books and the show need with play time. Usually there is dialogue or something in the scene/chapter that let's you know when and where you are in the story.

Bran got excited to see Sam because he has knowledge Bran doesn't have, in the books its explicitly said that on his own Bran can't see anything that wasn't in the presence of a Werewood tree (until he gets a better grasp on his powers) and if I'm not mistaken in the shows everything Bran sees that's not in the presence of a Werewood tree it's with the power of Bloodraven (Lyanna and Rhaegar got married in front of a werewood tree)
