Martin's World of Ice and Fire makes us think about our world. There is a God-sized hole in us that only God can fill. Is it satisfying to learn that there is "nothing" after death? Something in us recoils at that answer and longs for a better one. I've gotten caught up in GRRM 's world which he is the god of. I recall reading that he labels himself a "lapsed Catholic. " Another source says he is an atheist. I ain't buyin' it! Reference to faith resounds in his work. The problem we have is preaching and practice are too often contradictory and we have an Enemy who is expert at exploiting our doubts. We become cynics and doubt that Absolute Good exists. He does {exist}, but having given us free will, He forces us to seek Him, or get frustrated and reject Him. And our experience of life can be so painful that we struggle to focus. Enough of my ramblings. There is a verse 28: "So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation." Winter is coming? Jesus is coming....

Exactly. The showrunners are building the finale on top of old forum theories, so they are giving the public what they want, not necessarily a good ending or anything in character. I remember a friend saying "didn't they cut Jaime's right hand? Why does he have the left one with the gold glove-hand?" And that's when i knew it had reached the bottom.

Trishh Makes no actually George rr Martin told them how it ends before they even filmed season 1 , they books and tv show will have the same ending with only slightly different ways to get there as has been said my George and the show runners .

In LOTR, I always new who the good guys were and the bad guys were and who was going to live and die. Basically the same story that has been told literally trillions of times in human history.

+Sinbreaker I simply disagree. There is a reason that Tolkien is considered the father of fantasy. Hence I disagree that when LOTR was released it was merely the same story retold. Stories that last the test of time are the ones that were unique with a anti-fragile characteristic to within the story. Moral greyness existed within the LOTR. The most obvious being the character of Gollum /Sméagol. This is a character that murdered his own cousin, that is dangerous and motivated solely for selfish reasons. Yet as with all morally grey characters there is a redeeming characteristic which is one of the most important aspects of the story. Without the redeeming features of Sméagol the whole point of 'pity' loses its meaning in the story and it was the pity of this morally grey character that resulted in the one rings destruction. Fact is Frodo failed, he got to the top of the mountain and fucked up and he has to live with that guilt. There is another thing you underestimate that is the nature of the one ring. I find the concept fascinating in that through a desire for power characters are twisted when they possess the ring. As I said Boromir was one of the interesting characters I didn't expect to die. He also started to lose the plot towards the end of his story in attempting to jack the ring from Frodo. Sure I knew he was a good guy but um no actually that wasn't certain in the story, he could have changed. Prior to the splitting of the fellowship there was a danger that members would stop being the 'good guys'.... in fact thats a big part of why Frodo up and left everyone. Going back to Frodo, I KNEW when I was a kid that Frodo would screw up. Sure he was the good guy but he was deteriorating and it was getting worse the closer he got to mount doom. Hell I remember wondering if Sam was going to have to push him with the ring into that dam volcano. Gollum was grey, Frodo was going nuts and Sam seemed to be the only reliable good guy. The great thing about the one ring is that it demonstrates how people can change for the worse and that is a pretty powerful characteristic of the novel. The thing about Gollum is, is there still redeemable aspects to ones nature after the pain said character has caused. I just gotta say Tolkien wrote Darker stories than the LOTR. Spoilers for children of Hurin don't read if you don't want to know. In the tale Hurins son Turin is the main character- the start of the story is about Hurin getting owned fighting the then dark lord Morgoth who takes him alive and forces him to watch over his children in a magic chair knowing he will never have a life with them. Turin gets separated by his mother and sister at a very young age but gets raised by elfs. A racist Elf one day ticks off Turin in which he kills the Elf in self defence. Turin freaks out and runs away joining a band of men who are resistant fighters against Morgoth. One of the main Elfs who grew up with Turin joins his band. This main character is killed by Turin himself when he was captured by orcs... this Elf went to wake up Turin in his rescue attempt but the guy mistook him for an Orc and accidentally killed him.Turin at some point in the story joins an elfish city with a bridge that when raised prevents the city from being invaded. He is to marry the princess... but being an idiot he argues that they should take Morgoths army head on. Bridge is lowered... and Turin gets owned and the city is burned, the elf princess is murdered. The main antagonist is a wingless dragon known as Glaurung who can hypnotise his victims. Anyway while Turin is screwing up, his mother and sister get attacked by Glaurung - the mother escapes but the sister gets hermemory wiped when this dragons hypnotizes her He then lets her go free in this state. So..... guess what happens? Yep Turin finds his sister. He doesn't know she is his sister because he barely remembered her as a child and she herself has no memory of who she was.... so she doesn't recognise her brothers name 'Turin'. Annnnddd they fall in love, get married and she gets pregnant with his child, all the while Hurin is forced to watch. It gets better, Glaurung attacks their village and Turin goes to slay the dragon. He succeeds however Turins sister wife goes to the battle ground for she worries for her husband, she makes it just in time to see Turin standing over a mortally wounded Glaurung. Glaurung being a massive prick restores Turins sisters memory causing her to know the truth, Unable to take it she jumps off a cliff into the sea dying with the unborn child. Glaurung tells Turin he has been screwing his sister the whole time and then snuffs it. Finally Turin emotionally fucked commits suicide. This whole time Hurin the father has been forced to watch.......... The end. Yeahhhh Tolkien was really into black and white baby story telling........ On a more serious note the children of Hurin is way darker than the LOTR but doesn't mean dark = better. I still consider the LOTR to be as good as the children of Hurin and I consider Tolkiens works to be on Martins level, which to me speaks volumes as both writers came from different times. Whether the song of ice and fire series will survive the test of time is yet to be seen, though I think it will.

I'm with you on defending Tolkien. Including Martin's criticism of traditional fantasy isn't meant to be me slighting him. They lived through different contexts and upbringings. Martin wouldn't exist without him. He has said in an interview that the Gandalf death took him by surprise and had an impact on him, but that Tolkien should have kept him dead instead of bringing him back to be even more powerful. For that reason, in fact, he has said that if he brings a character back, they must change in some dire way, and usually for the worse. As for your other defenses, I agree with you. Never read History of Middle Earth, but I'm intrigued now. Thanks for the comment.
