Before the puck even dropped, the Penguins got some positive news: after missing the previous game due to illness, Evgeni Malkin returned to the lineup. Things only went up from there. Kasperi Kapanen scored his 11th of the season with an absolutely beautiful move under five minutes into the contest. Around ten minutes after that, Teddy Blueger wired a shot past Nedeljkovic to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. In the 2nd period, things got crazy. Evgeni Malkin scored his first goal of the game within two minutes of the resumption of play to make it 3-0. With his assist on Evgeni Malkin's goal, Kris Letang now has sole possession of fifth-place on the Penguins’ all-time points list with 637. Jeff Carter scored a shorthanded tally under two minutes later to increase the lead to 4-0. Per Penguins PR, Jeff Carter's goal was his 19th career shorthanded goal, and first with Pittsburgh. His 19 career shorthanded tallies are tied for the fourth-most among all active players. Just over two minutes after that, Bryan Rust scored on the power play, making it 5-0 in favor of the home team. And just under two minutes after THAT, Malkin notched his second of the game following a picture-perfect series of moves. It was 6-0 Pittsburgh before Detroit got on the board. Both Larkin and Vrana put the puck behind Tristan Jarry to cut the Penguins’ lead to 6-2. With just 39 seconds remaining in this wild period of play, captain Sidney Crosby put the puck in the net as well. After 40 minutes of play, it was 7-2. In the final period, Danton Heinen scored his 14th of the year on the man-advantage. That tally was followed up by Evgeni Malkin for the third time in this contest. This was Malkin’s 13th career NHL hat trick, the second-most among all active NHL players. He now has six goals in his last four games, including goals in four-straight appearances. Brian Boyle earned his eighth goal of the season to make it 10-2. Tonight marks the 12th time in franchise history that the Penguins have scored 10+ goals in a game, and first time since Nov. 1, 1995 vs. Tampa Bay (10-0). Finally, the newest member of the team, Rickard Rakell, scored his first goal in black and gold to get the Penguins to the final score of 11-2. This goal capped off Rakell’s three-point night (1G-2A). The Penguins scored 11 goals in a game for the fifth time in team history, and first time since Nov. 16, 1993 versus Philadelphia (11-5). The team record for goals in a game is 12, set twice and most recently on Dec. 26, 1991. Tonight marked the Penguins’ 40th win of the season, their 14th 40-win campaign in the Crosby-Malkin era. Since 2006.07, no team has more 40-win seasons than Pittsburgh.
