Thanks for giving a comprehensive view - I actually watched a gameplay of it trying to decide whether or not to buy it (it's on a sale on GOG right now), and I felt that the one ending I saw was lackluster and wasn't going to buy it ... even though the setting (and art!) looked interesting), but hearing this, I'll give this game a chance :D

I was trying to think up a witty comment about Polish authors of science fiction and fantasy and video games based on their books, but then I realized that it's not only only the Polish authors. The whole region of eastern Europe has some interesting takes on the two genres. Disco Elysium was written by an Estonian author, for example. And then it dawned upon me that what I would really love is a CRPG based on Strugatsky books, namely Roadside Picnic. While Stalker games are cool shooters and all, and the Tarkovsky movie has its merits, both stories are merely castrated versions (both in their own way) of what brothers Strugatsky wrote. The video game technology is advanced enough, and the CRPG genre is now fleshed out enough that a faithful, full-fledged CRPG adaptation of the source novel or a non-canon sequel (similar to how Witcher games are non-canon sequels to the source material) would be possible.

Came across your video as I saw the game on switch and as it was on sale and some Nintendo coins I just picked this up on switch for under £10, your review sold it to me. I understand your criticism about voice acting but I have a habit that the minute I can read dialogue I never give the VO time to finish so I think I will be fine. I am in the mood for some good Cyberpunk adventuring so this looks perfect. love the 'wander in wisdom' sign off that got the sub haha

I've started playing this game. Just finishing up in Harvest Time. I like narrative CRPGs, and not a big fan of spending long hours of grinding through hordes of gnolls or whatnot, so this is really my cup of tea. But I couldn't agree with you more on the drawbacks of this game. Although all the reading in this game is generally speaking, a light read (unlike som games, where it is heavier than scientific articles and Dostoyevsky in Russian), well performed voice acting would certainly add a lot to the atmosphere. I haven't been reading all the encyclopedia entries though. It feels like there are more encyclopedia entries than dialogue. Especially those entries could have been voiced, since they are not interactive, and usually not that important to progress the case. They could've made it more important to read and work with that data to solve the cases. The price is also an issue. You can buy Disco Elysium for less, and this isn't as rich in content or quality. I don't know if game studios price up their games, to get a fair price during sales, or how those things work. But most importantly I'm having fun. This is a fun world, an interesting story and a nice game to play. They could expand on this a lot. While playing on my first playthrough, I can't help but wonder if the game adapts and "changes the story" around my conclusions in the mind map/mind palace, to either fit my conclusions, or even rather to introduce twists. Like a programmed Dungeon Master.

I generally love the isometric RPG games, but this was too narrative heavy for me - some interesting gameplay ideas and the story was decent, but I ended up rushing through it and that's generally the opposite of what I do with stories - I'd still give it a strong 7.5/10 though.

Might pick it up once it drops to something around 10-15$. Not gonna spend money on a 10-20 hour game with no voice acting

I just bought it for free on Epic and I'm going in totally blind. Epic still sucks at giving any handles on a game apart from pictures.

Comparing this game to Disco Elysium is insulting to Disco Elysium. It has no memorable characters, no compelling story, no engaging gameplay. Text in Disco Elysium was made to be readable. Text in Gamedec was made to be skippable.
