Sega actually had their own power strip with five outlets spaced far enough apart that you could fit five huge AC adapters with no problem (even the one for the ColecoVision). This power strip is very rare and sells for at least $200 on eBay.
The thought of one adapter for 3 consoles just screams fire hazard. But it's also convenient. Good video, I'm going to visit that site. Thanks for the video and the link.
Hey Adam. Thanks for reviewing The Trio which accepts 100-240VAC input so International gamers can use a cheap plug adapter (1-2 bucks) and we have Euro Adapters in stock. The reason I don't use the laptop style is it adds some design limitations. We do offer a space saver adapter which opens every outlet on your power strip. I'll be sure list them again before the next production run.
Agreed. Actually the guy who made them, as it turns out, watches my stuff and commented below. He actually explained he tried that and was having issues with it. His username is RetroGameCave. Thanks for watching dude, and I'm glad you're posting videos again.
Awesome. Totally going to get one, I honestly keep my 32x/segacd packed away because I can never be arsed to plug them in with the genesis, now I can display voltron of 90's gaming in full glory
For anyone in the UK, just to let you know that you don't need a step up converter for this. All you need is a standard US to UK plug converter. The power supply accepts 240v so it works fine in the UK without any modifications. I have one and it works great - the manufacturer/seller confirmed this before I ordered it.
I have the Trio M2 and it works great. Convenient, saves space, doesn't run as warm, and doesn't have the buzzing noise that some of my official adapters have. These also work on Japanese Mega Drive and Mega CD consoles as I use to have a JPN MD1 and MCD1 and powered them with the Trio M1.
It's just a matter of getting the proper cables. On EBay you can get proper stereo patch 32X cables for the model 1 Genesis to get the best sound out of them. That's what I use.
32X is a cartridge add-on that was basically a 32 bit console. Using cartridges very similar to the Genesis, but more advanced. Think like of like N64 compared to the SNES. But instead of being a separate unit, it required the Genesis to operate.
The "box" you describe is inside the PS2. It's part of what makes the console so big. The slim version has an external power supply, that is similar to the lap top style PSU, and there for allows the console to be much smaller.
I am totally getting this thing when they're in stock. And don't worry, you're not alone when it comes to CD 32X games. I love Slam City with Scottie Pippin and pretty much most of the Sega CD and 32X games.
I believe the reason for the power brick at the end of the cable is simply to keep price down and have less parts. All the brick does is convert the high power ac electricity to low powered dc. So you can use thinner wire, and don't need to include a thicker cable. A minor cost but you can always just hook the brick to a short extension cable.
I typed "Show me the power of the Sega CD" and this was the top result! Although google took me a little literal and actually showed me the electrical power. I mean the graphical power!
That would take a very long time to go in to. I will say it's largely what I grew up with, but also I just respect Sega's art more. Probably because it never really was that popular. I know that makes me sound like a hipster, but it's kind of true. Sega stuff is great, but the best stuff typically isn't well known. Sega's philosophy was make great stuff and people will find it. They didn't put nearly enough in to their marketing for the most part.
they had a huge official power extender thing like those white ones where you can plug in like 6 cables but it was official and meant for the trio had like 4 or 5 plug ins and you bought it seperately... seeing this as an even better alternative is quite nice
I thought I was crazy for getting so excited over a power cable, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one! I got my trio m1 earlier this year and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I highly recommend it to anyone even interested in getting the 32x or cd addons. The cable provides good clean power, I haven't done any direct comparison with the OEM supply but it's easily as good, if not better. It's definitely miles better than the shitty retro bit power supplies, dirty power wouldn't be surprised if they fried systems. Video is very unstable and unwatchable when using those. When I got my trio, I played my. system so hard. It def got some love. Unfortunately my cd's fuse finally blew after a couple of months of this (was still somehow running on the original 20 year old fuse, a miracle by all means) I've been too lazy to repair it lately but I sure have been enjoying the 32x and genesis games in the meanwhile. I miss sonic cd and night trap 32x, so that will be my motivation to get it done sooner or later.
You can use any 9-10v DC power supply (old notebook supply for example) with enough amperage and make your own cable with the amount and type of connectors you need, as the old SEGA consoles have standardized DC power connectors. 2 wire cables and connectors are cheap. So you can get rid of the power brick at the socket and use it for many more consoles (SNES,NES,etc.) running on 9-10v. That's the way i did it back in the days. 1 Power supply to rule them all! :D
OK thanks. I wouldn't recommend leaving it plugged in for per-longed periods of time when not in use. Genesis takes 9V to power it and 10V has an increased chance of frying it with time. Always love these informative videos. Still waiting for the Shenmue collection video :P
Thanks. That's why I got both originally. But there's more on both to offer than just those two titles. More so the Sega CD, as the 32X only had like 44 titles.
If you have the proper set up (as demonstrated in the video I linked in this video) you'll get better colors and better clarity. But it won't blow you away compared to the Genesis. That's not the point of the 32X, just a nice bonus.
I recall some guy out there is willing to modify a Gamecube power supply to do the same thing, the specs on the thing are absolutely spot to replace the three adapters plus it has that nice normal plug at the end. That and most Nintendo stuff is built like a tank, I'd like to imagine it'd last a long time. I've been toying around with the idea of doing it myself, but if I mess up and it fries my Sega then it's on my head.
JVC Wondermega, Japanese only release may be the rarest. Aiwa sound made one that's really rare. There is the Teradrive. Which is basically a Genesis that looks like a PC tower. The rarest one I have is the Pioneer LaserActive.
The 32X doesn't produce sound. If you have a model 1 Genesis, get your audio from the 3.5 MM audio jack on the front. That way you get true stereo sound.
It´s genius what this guy does. He basicly solders the plugs on wires and sells them for a good amount of money. I have seen people do something like thin on their own, even some with a Laptop-Power Supply. The only thing you need is a Power Supply Strong enough for all 3 Units and some basic soldering skills.
I ghettoed my own up, using a 9V switching power supply and a bunch of connectors from Digikey, wired to support all combinations. Currently it's powering my Genesis 2/32X combo. The SMPS whines a bit and it looks like it's going to start a fire, but it does work.
For Australia you would need a step down converter. AU power standard is 2400 Watts and USA is 1800 or 1100 Watts (the power supply would get fried). If the power supply was for the 2400Watt standard it would work on both as the lower standard is compatible. (bad design choice by creator should have made for 2400Watt)
Sorry my rookie questions then but I've completed my model 2 Genesis+CD+32x combo yet! HDRetrovision out the 32x, that is it! And I got my first model 1 Genesis to be alone too, that was wicked buzzy and was its failing power brick! I LOVE retrogamecave! n the window to order a Trio is quite small but got one! It's a external power brick for standard plug so outlets have plenty of space
do you have to plug the 3 consoles to make it work? Or just plug the consoles you wanna play?. I mean for example if I wanna play just the genesis or the genesis with just one add-on.
It's mostly a waste, but you get a few things out of it. Definitely intangible knowledge of film basics as well as acceptable story structure etcetera. But the MOST valuable thing you get is contacts, provided you do it correctly.
If an adapter doesn't have a transformer, it'll hum. And 99% of these new retro adapters are light as a feather, no transformers and make hardware have humming sound.
I would get the Sega Genesis CDX because it is a standalone Sega CD console. Add-ons for the Genesis cause a lot of clutter. There is also a Sega CD memory cartridge that saves your game data. The Sega CD memory cartridge can fit into your model 1 and model 2 Genesis consoles and it can also fit into your CDX. I have an idea: get a Sega power strip where the sockets are rotated and spaced out and plug in your model 1/model 2 Genesis, plug your Sega 32X add-on into either the model 1 or model 2 Genesis, plug in your CDX and last but not least, plug in your Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast and you're all set.
Nice idea. I had thought of it before as long as the amperage (wattage) is high enough on the PSU to handle all 3 than it's not too hard to split the connectors off into 3 like that. There's no reason they couldn't have made it with a normal plug on the end (with the brick in the middle like you said) so that's one negative but still it's way better than using all 3 giant bricks!
2:52 Well, you're right about Sega never releasing a revised 32X, but you're wrong about there being only one 32X power supply. US and Japanese regions ones are 120V, but the 32X was released in Europe meaning it was sold there with a 220V power supply; and the UK and Irish one's will have a different 3 pin connector to the mainland Europe ones. *Bad* things happen when NTSC region consoles are imported into Europe by eBay buyers who think a plug adapter is all they'll need for 60Hz NTSC fun.
This is a solution but, the power-brick still had to be at the end of the cord rather than the middle like the Xbox 360, PS Vita and PSP charge cables. We would have been happy to have a standard plug with the power-brick not getting in the way of our outlet or powerstrip. Thre-in-one is still totally awesome. One solution for all but, the brick is still in the wrong place.
with the technology, is quite easy to built that M1. It's just a more powerfull version of the standard adaptor (with just 0,5-0,7 A more than the standard, to be able to run all the 3 device together) but much smaller ('cause now you actually CAN do small adaptor. look at the galaxy s4 adaptor! is so small!).
