Sega CD Model 1 VS Model 2 which is better?

The CMOS replacement battery is ML2016, purchase one that has solder tabs pre installed. Also 2 things I failed to mention is that early model 1 systems have a BIOS chip that is socketed! This means you can buy or have someone create a custom BIOS that will allow you to play any region game. Theres videos on RU-vid going over this.
The other is that Model 1 systems required the use of a " an audio mixing cable" this is just a regular 3 foot auxiliary cable that plugs into the Sega Genesis Model 1's audio out jack in the front (set the volume slider on the Genesis to 8 as per the SCD user guide). The other end plugs into the "Mixing" jack on the back of the model 1 and model 2 SCD console. This allows the SCD to mix the audio from the Genesis with the audio from the SCD together. If you dont use the mixing cable you'll still get the audio from the Genesis but it'll play in mono only while the SCD audio will play in stereo. Model 2 systems don't have a headphone jack a will play audio in stereo regardless of how you have the audio hooked up, assuming you're using stereo out cables to begin with.

Thanks for the informative video! It's a shame to hear that some people have soured something that you used to enjoy. This kind of content is critical to ensuring some of these systems will continue to work for years to come. You have a lot of people who get into this hobby and don't really know much with respect to console maintenance, myself included, so it's good to have people like yourself that know your stuff, though it sucks to hear that your experience with other hobbyists has been all too frequently negative.

It's not that they are surface-mount. Surface-mount ceramics don't have anything to leak. Through-hole electrolytic caps fail too. They are polarized electrolytic with a bad formula. This was a problem with cheap electrolytic caps back then but became a problem with most over time after RoHS forced the industry to reformulate. The capacitor plague started when a particularly unstable formula was failing particularly fast... like, within the warranty periods! It got blamed on Taiwanese component manufacturer stealing half of a Japanese formula and failing to stabilize it but, over time, it became clear that even Japanese caps were failing due to RoHS-compliant reformulations. No one in the industry seems to be willing to admit this just like they won't blame GPU or game console failures on lead-free solder (XBOX360, PS3, MacBook GPUs, etc). The TurboGrafx-16, original PC Engine and Duo RX don't have the issues of the TurboExpress/PCE GT or TurboDuo/PCE Duo, and that's because they used better capacitors. Heck, look at the NES where the quality caps Nintendo used on the board never failed but the caps Alps and Mitsumi used in the RF Modulator and power moduls frequently leak. Same goes for N64 where the power supplies are made by different companies (like "Zebra") and their caps sometimes fail but the caps in the console itself never fail. In light of this, the idea that you should preemptively replace caps that aren't known to leak is likely bad advice. For retro devices with quality caps there is a good chance that you'd be installing failure-prone RoHS-compliant caps that will die in a few years where the originals could have lasted decades longer. ...not that you've said this or anything. Just felt it important to mention anywhere it's relevant since the bad advice is repeated far more often. :)

my exp, if your going to recap due to a few caps that may need swapped, use audio grade caps, mostly because in my exp, they are FAR less failure prone, they cost a bit more, but, i have recapped all sorts of things and the only caps that failed were failing due to other components on the way out, actually saving the rest of teh system by failing... and your not wrong... i have recapped things that LOOKED fine but, i could tell the caps used were knockoffs that WOULD fail, i spent countless hours working for a place that recapped/repaired products for sharp, hp and a few other vendors back during that period... it was so bad they had us doing it as well as shipping cargo containers to the philipins for recapping, also had a rash of bad inductors and coils around that time in a very narrow range of values from multi vendors... but the caps were the main issue, gods so many bad caps.. the knockoffs just gave people a warning sign that... caps basedon that formula were going to have issues.. the thing that annoys me most with RoHS is zero lead solder.. i have just replaced the stock solder on a good number of devices and perm repaired the, because the leaded solder was more resilient then the lead free solder used... look at louis rossman videos talking about replacing the horrible solder apple uses during some of his repair videos.. you need to watch what you buy with components in general, stick when possible to well known vendors, and research what your going to order... my exp is enthusiast communities often have alot more useful info on what to use and what to avoid then official numbers you can track down... its far easier ot hide failure rates then one may think... sort of like how they still pretend that the return of the jedi never made a profit..LOL..

Looking to buy a Sega CD for my model 1. Wasn't sure if both the CD model 1 or the CD model 2 would work with the Genesis model 1. Good to know that they both do. Growing up in the '90s, I originally thought the Sega CD model 2 was the only one! LOL! When I was looking on eBay and I saw the actual CD model 1, I had to do research and that's when I found your video. Still getting a CD model 2 since that's what I grew up thinking about, but now I'm thinking of also getting a Genesis model 2 to hook into the CD, then I'll just keep my Genesis model 1 on my display shelf. Off the subject, since the Genesis only came with a video and one audio cable going from the system to the tv, I figured that if I want good stereo sound from my Genesis model 1, I use a 3.5mm Male Plug Jack to 2 RCA Male Stereo Audio Cable going from the front of the Sega Genesis headphone jack to the RCA to HDMI converter to get true stereo sound. It's cheap, works great and I don't need to mod my Genesis for s-video. Also, sounds great on my Bose surround sound system. Anyways, great video and I appreciate you making it. Wish you still repaired them just in case I ever have any issues. LOL

both work, my exp has been more laser issues with the rev2, more cap issues with the rev1, tho removing and replacing surface mount caps of this style is NOT HARD, infact, you dont need to use surface mouth caps to repolace them.. just crimp the dead caps off the pcb, solder the new ones to the posts/ sticking up... also makes re-re-capping easier... i also strongly recommend using audio grade caps simply because they fail less often in my exp, and, you can use over spec caps, this tends to actually lead to better results in alot of cases.. so if you cant get the exact value, one rated higher is fine, lower is not.. honestly these are all neat, when it came to repairs... we found the ver1 easier to work on/repair, the ver2.. dont get me started.. and the cdx is cool but, genuinely are a PITA to recap, i got a friend whos daughter does it whenver she can get a dead cdx for a reasonable price, as 99% of the time a full recap and the things become fully functional, im also told if you know what old cd players to source from you can replace the whole cd read portion if the laser fails, as the module was not custom for sega but something they sourced from another vendor... i would have to pester her for the info but, she buys specific old optical drives and devices just for this kinda thing... as most times she dosnt even have to calibrate the laser it just works... i gather a couple old external cd-r drives are actually the best source as they have the same assembly and connections but the lasers are much higher quality being designed to burn, and rarely were used much, so they tend to not fail once you do that swap even reading burned disk isnt an issue, the laser was desinged for that... (why dreamcasts tend to die.. lasers burned out from over stress reading burned disks, thermal cam vid i saw years ago showed how much harder the laser had towork for the average burned disk and it wasnt good.... no wonder they would stop reading disks...

Yes the revisions are VA1, 1.5, 1.8 these are all the same and have that scratchy audio. Then you have VA2 and 2.3 these actually use the Yamaha FM chip found in the first Genesis VA6.8 and earlier. But the FM audio is messed up lol. The notes are off and it sounds like an emulator kinda. Then you have the best versions the VA3 and 4. These have perfect audio with clean sound. So actually there's 7 revisions of the model 2 haha. The rarest of em all is the VA2 and 2.3 revisions. Out of the hundreds of model 2 consoles I've come across I've only seen one of each of the VA2 and 2.3 consoles. They're a little heavier then those others actually but they just have weird audio. Video wise all the model 2 consoles are about the same. Some have more vivid colors then others and some have slightly sharper picture quality.

Yes, switching PSUs are often garbage and sometimes can't supply good power at their rated amperage... but old PSUs come with a host of problems too. In my experience it looks like about half the 1602 PSUs have burned on the inside due to someone shorting out the end. Heck, I've even done that a couple times when using a 1602 to test faulty game systems. Also, their capacitors can fail. There are many old linear (AKA "non-switching") PSUs that are notorious for failing and taking the device they were intended for with them. It's why the Atari 800XL "ingot" PSU is notorious and why the C64Saver exists for C64 PSUs and, consequently, one more reason why there is a shortage of SID chips. The key is to get a GOOD PSU regardless of whether you get a switching PSU or a linear one. For example, the 1Spot from Truetone. It's heavy with ample overhead (extra half an amp) and it's the right size and polarity. On top of that it's a trusted audio equipment brand intended for production-level audio equipment. That means it's going to be particularly low-noise/well-filtered (partly why it weighs so much). Extra long and easy to find from Sweetwater or Guitar Center or other audio equipment dealers. Not particularly expensive but you can sometimes get them under $10 used.

I've only had a handful of bad Sega adapters actually, but I've had a bunch of bad SNES adapters! With those it seems the transformers actually fail since the voltage on a bad one will be about 6 volts or so with no load while a good one will be at 12 volts or so with no load.

As suggested, clean the bus connection between the Genesis and Sega CD units. The shield plates between the Genesis and Sega CD should be used, especially as the shield plates also helps to link both the Genesis and Sega CD units to a single electrical ground. You may want to check the condition of the RESET button on the Genesis unit itself. If the button is flaky, it might trigger a reset without pressing it. This may not be likely, however, if this is happening with only two games out of how many you've played without problems. You may also want to check that the Sega CD's save game RAM is formatted. Some Sega CD games may behave erratically or even crash if the same game RAM isn't formatted. The save game RAM can lose its formatting if the Sega CD's internal rechargeable battery loses power, so you may want to check that the Sega CD is keeping the RAM formatted when the system is off. If the save game RAM isn't holding the formatting when it's off, then try to charge the Sega CD's internal battery by leaving it on for several hours. If the RAM still won't hold the formatting, then it may be time to replace the battery. Battery replacement is a job that requires soldering and should only be done by someone who knows what he/she is doing if you don't want to damage the board and its components.
