Several years at this point now. I actually KNOW why. The lighting and rendering system for this game made in Unreal Engine was made SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS GAME. This game was murdered by paid reviewers in 2013. Even in 2020 games haven’t gotten much better graphically that is because they ironically use THE SAME SYSTEM THAT THIS GAME WAS THE FIRST TO HAVE! I found this out through a forum, and honestly it’s funny. I have the sources as well. I’ll put that in another comment. This game was innovative for a new studio, I guess experienced game devs paid off reviewers to kill this game in order to save face from embarrassment.
Personally, I loved that it was so linear. Sometimes when you have too much shit going on in your life, as i do, you dont have time for all that exploration, and a linear game is exactly what you need. that said, i would love to see this team make an open world game because neo paris is beautiful
@@the_mystic_ghost4148 Funny how today people like simple short games, before being short was bad. Now people like these types of games and love the ps2 or dreamcast gen.
I couldn't disagree more with this review. Because of the bad press Remember Me received at launch, I avoided it. Fast forward to the Stream Xmas sale, I picked it up cheap and, and, and I'm sat scratching my head. Remember Me is digital art, highly entertaining, action packed, something new (design wide), beautiful to look at, an awesome soundtrack and most of all, one of the best games I've played all year. HUGELY underrated and I'll champion it until the end. I hope a sequel arrives in 2014 that silences the critics.
I couldn't agree with you more. I'm baffled as to what gamers & critics are expecting out of a game, as this one has everything I would hope for - beautiful graphics (this is still a visual medium, after all), an imaginative world & story, fresh combat system, good voice acting, good length (10-12 hrs). I suppose they think it'd be a better game if it was padded out to 30 hrs with fluff like having to talk to townspeople & do fetch quests for them, ugh.
TheOmmadawn - The year is now 2018 & that sequel never came unfortunately, but i can tell you with absolute certainty that Remember Me will not be forgotten. Legitimate work has been provided by Dontnod Ent, & that will stand the test of time.
@@solidust573 It hasn’t been forgotten graphically either. The lighting and rendering system made SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS GAME, is used in many triple A titles now. That’s why everything stagnated at about the same time graphically. They murdered this game with paid reviews and cherished the developments technologically speaking for their own gain. By law though they have to have references, so do enough digging and you will find out that this game is referenced everywhere in game development. Link to GDC game development conference in my next comment.
This kind of work must be appreciated and supported... It's a beautifull game which can be brought up to a much higher level. Movements, graphics, brilliant design that's joy to watch. And they barely found a publisher because it's a female character! Only reason that we won't get more of this in better pack are publishers that just throw away inovative projects like this. Imagine this game with budget like Assassins creed, as an open world with side missions and absolute freedom in the way you play it. More potential than Tomb Raider.
Mario Vlatkovic I really don't think that it's because they introduced a female character. The concept/world and distropia theme is just not what mainstream AAA games normally feature, so I imagine that as a much more probable reason why they didn't found a publisher right away.
MoonShadeOsu No, I watched an interview when director of the game spoke of it, it was rejected for a long time because of a femele char. and finaly they had to delete a lot of sceenes where Nillin sort of flirted with some guy, and all those that brought up her female side. That was the condition from the final publisher, so we got changed and incomplete story mode.
MoonShadeOsu www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-03-19-dontnod-publishers-said-you-cant-have-a-female-character Here's the interview. These kinds of "Female leads don't sell" mentalities really happen. Dontnod (the creators of Remember Me) had the same issue with Life is Strange. It took them a while to find a publisher that was comfortable with a female protagonist.
Marth Shepard Yeah some months have past since my last reply. I have since learned about this story. Man, fuck those publishers. I was skeptical because I thought, what normal human being thinks that way? It can't really be that big publishers would pull that, right? Man was i wrong. Kissing another dude will feel awkward? What is this, the 1950s? But there are enough publishers out there who would publish it I guess. And even if there weren't, go on kickstarter, go on steam, make the game you want to make, not this mainstream bullshit they force you to make. But yeah, the state of the AAA industry is pretty fucked up. Just listen to Sterling here, I found his video on the topic to be very interesting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NzthXKu8lJw.html
Who cares if it's not open world? Not every game needs to be open world, they're not usually filled with much anyway, NPC's not doing much and buildings that most of the time you can't go into so what's the point? Plus open world games usually have fairly unimpressive graphics due to the huge maps taking up so much power and the control system designs normally take a back seat when the games being made, meaning you usually end up with a game that has average graphics, poor controls and a average story line. Personally I'd rather have a linear game with a great story, good controls and impressive graphics rather than an average open world one, because let's face it there are a lot of those floating around these days. Give me Uncharted any day.
Thank you. All these damn nerds always bitching about open world this, open world that. And what are you left with? Like you said, watered down graphics to be able to support the open world, whereas Remember Me looks gorgeous. With open world you also end up having to talk to townspeople and do boring shit like go fetch somebody's dog who ran away and got lost in the sewers, all this boring shit to pad the game length out to like 30 hours. Screw that, give me a well told story in a beautiful setting that takes me 12 hours & I'm happy. Plus, on top of all that, Remember Me has a very interesting combat system that I even preferred to stuff like Batman Arkham games.
VicInNocal You got the point... I think reviewers take money for good reviews, when I hear this guy say ''Yes, it looks good but the game is shit, Nillin is good character, voice's good but combat sistem's shit, good idea but the story's shit'', he brought up all the wrongs and mantioned few good things. I enjoyed every single moment of this game, fuck him.
Oooh nice! Yeah, I'm looking into all types of Cyberpunk-themed material lately, even trying to get my hands on the original CP2020 book. Currently, I'm playing The Observer. I think that game will help get us use to the whole Neuro(techie) role you can play as come CP2077. Ahh, so much hype but it's important we kinda have a basic understanding of Cyberpunk as a whole through everything we've seen now to have realistic expectations when CP2077 gets released. Otherwise, we'll find ourselves disappointed and what not!
Indeed. Don't worry about being disappointed, CD Projekt Red are an excellent developer. Just keep an open mind. I didn't read the book as I want to explore everything in the game and not know any spoilers. I've come across the game that's being reviewed in this video by accident. I picked up a brand new Xbox 360 S for $49 last week and I've been hoarding all sorts of games, just to keep myself busy until CP and Red Dead Redemption 2 are released :P
I'm mainly a PC gamer but I haven't upgraded for a while now due to insane graphics cards and memory prices. So I chose to go with a 360 in order to play games that aren't available on PC or aren't really optimized for it such as Midnight Club LA, Saints Row and Red Dead Redemption. There's some great hidden gems out there. It even tempted me to get a PS4 Slim now. To play the Yakuza games and all of Sony's exclusives.
The linearity of the game isn't the problem. It's the way the level design engages players. If the game had more complex puzzles involved in platforming it would have been a better experience. A great example of a linear game is Portal.
bought it today for 3$ on steam (75% off) and i must say i like it pretty much..sure its not open worlds, wich would make it 100 times more awesome..but the idea of maipulating memorys is pretty cool..gives you a little Butterfly effect/Inception feeling..i like it..worth to play
If you click on the second combo you will be able to mix and match the different elements to the combo on the right hand side. You will have buttons that tell you which key/button it's for, select it and put it in the proper spots. Then once you have filled the whole combo up with available moves you can use it. And as you reach those points in the combo it will use those powers. The two you need to worry about right now are the red and yellow, red is damage, and yellow is health. Good luck.
This game in terms of artwork has to easily be the most impressive I've seen in a video game. Say what you want about the rest of the game but the actual environments are nothing short of amazing. I've actually found myself taking pictures during cut scenes with Steams in game snap feature just for potential desktop backgrounds (Not even kidding as you can check them out here drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2C-yhI3vJRPdWI0ZHJXUk4wZ0U&usp=sharing) I can't even imagine what would happen if you took the art team for Remember Me and had them design the graphics for a game using CryEngine 3 or Unreal Engine 4.
My game design teacher worked on this game and they actually had to reduce on it a lot because of the release date coming too fast well the usual stuff ^^
Completely agree. I found the game very interesting. It has some glitches, that's true. But being immersed so much in the story makes you step forward over them. And graphically I mean...it's art galore!
Seven years later I’m asking Capcom, how come we haven’t got a remake for the PS4 and now the PS five? This game has for potential I think it deserves a remake in a sequel!
I would love for this underrated gem to get a proper remaster, and a proper sequel. I would also love for Capcom to properly put Nilin in some crossover games and by properly I don't mean including her as a one-off cameo, or a DLC costume/skin I mean as a actual character with a decent role to play in the plot.
Leonardo Pereira Rodrigues i said seems not seen, cant u read? i meant that capcom never fails to disappoint, but its the same meaning to also say never seems to disappoint. if u dont understand this then learn english.
This game strangely reminds me of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Really underrated game right there also. If you guys like this you might want to check that one out too.
firstly im by no means bashing arkham city or its technicall execution i think its a great accomplishment they managed to hide its limitations in such a way that barely anyone noticed them (btw it took me a while to see it), in the parts you mentioned the city isnt aviable to explore therefor the console doesnt render it therefor you can have lighting effects without hurting performace, (im gonna make a part 2 for this comment because i dont have enough notes)
I don't know why but I get the feeling this game will be an underrated gem like Mirror's Edge. Definitely buying this, it also has a great atmosphere which is one of the most important things for me.
But its not really a shooter at all. Aside from the spammer. Which isn't really so much a gun as it is an electronic hacking tool tht yes can hit enemys with an electric volt
I'm still confused about why some people say the combat is "clunky." I'm finding that it flows very well and is seamless. The timing is just more strict than your average button masher.
This game makes me think of Mirror's Edge and Beyond Good and Evil. It's like if there's a type of female action hero going against corruption, it's exemplified in these 3 female characters. Jade, from Beyond Good and Evil. Faith, from Mirror's Edge. And this lady. In a way she's like a mixture of the 2. She's more realistic looking like Faith, but like Jade she's in an area similar to France or Venice. Well. I shouldn't say that. BGE was made by a French developer, though.
In case you people haven't heard, Gamespot even recently said that they are going to be even HARDER on games than they have in the past. Anywhere from a 0.5-1.5 difference from what you would expect.
I'm halfway on the game (got it recently on 8 pounds from Base) and I agree with every word on this review. The Memory Rewind sections are the best part of the game. The combat is kinda boring and the game honestly does not know what it want from itself. At moment you have combat, "platforming" and then really boring stealth (Which make really no sense. I can crush those robots with the Spammer, but no, you have to stealth. Really boring) I wish the game was something like Heavy Rain, focusing on story, and the Memory Sections as the core gameplay.
That isn't what I'm saying. I'm not talking about gameplay, nor level design. I'm simply saying that I found the game world itself captivating - as many did. For me, the main frustration in not being able to stray from the scripted path in game and explore, stems from the fact that the WORLD created in Remember Me is as good as it is. This is of course entirely my opinion, and therefore not a matter of fact by any means. But I hope you feel clearer about the point I was trying to make.
You'd get through the first half though? Impressive. Any chance you could leave the address of the patisserie you get your éclairs from here? I'd really like to avoid the place.
(this is part 2 please read part 1) when you can only touch the crystals the console doesnt render anything else in real time therefor it can look great without sacrificing performance, when you fight 30 dudes look closely and you will be able to tell only a few actually move at any second, its all about using the power as effectively as possible, RM style doesnt showcase its grachips very well but when it comes to textures, AA, and ploygons RM is the best the consoles can do
Okay, after giving it another go I understood that the first combo starts when you punch and the second one starts when you kick first. I just unlocked the first special ability thing (cant remember the name) and the cooldown reduction combos and holy fuck this combat is fun.
Pretty spot on review. Game is brilliant but flawed. Still, Nilin is cool and the story kept me enthralled till the credits rolled. The combo customizer warrants a recommendation. Excellent music too.
definitely... one of those underrated games when people look back on this gen.. like Ressonance of Fate... Nier.. Folklore.. Valkyria Chronicles.. Kingdoms of Amalur.. 3D dot game heroes.. Vanquish etc
Fair enough man. Something I've noticed in a lot of the reviews is people saying that the title has a lot of potential, but they felt these aspects weren't explored enough. No idea how you found it, but I can't *entirely* disagree with that - I loved it, but there's scope for much more out of the game. My worry is that we'll end up with another Mirrors Edge. A title which could be truly great (ala AC 2) if refined further in a sequel, but blasé reviews crushing any chance of that happening.
The world of this game is fascinating. The story sounds neat as well. Too bad it has the gameplay flaws mentioned above. I hope they make a sequel where they fix those problems.
I have just started playing this and I'm up to the first memory remix and from what I've played, I find it really fun! Very original ideas (well at least I've never seen a game like it but you may have). I recommend this for a different playing experience if you're tired of shooting (I know I am).
Might get this based on it being a more colour saturated blade runner. Also seems like it might get an amazing sequel on next gen consoles so I'd like to know the narrative.
Combat feels sluggish but other than that I loved it. I had to stop every five seconds to take screenshots and admire every little detail. I hope we get to explore this setting in the future in a more open way.
WAIT! That combat system is ripped directly out of Arkham City. Planting a bomb on enemy's was one of Robins moves. That's a bit naughty of the developer, but it's an amazing combat system.
It's pretty hard to see this kind of game. I like its concept, the design, create your owned combat, and platfloming. Really interesting and I gonna give a shot.
Thing is, never doubt new IPs. I remember buying assassins creed and thinking it was ass. When 2 came out, I was blown away from the improvements. I give new IPs 2 games in order to impress me. Right now, I'm looking forward to a sequel already because this has potential
7,0 only!! I thought you'd say something thing like 8 or higher! sheesh but you're kinda right the game does copy uncharted moving acrobat system which as well looks like prince of Persia but STILL! being able to manipulate the memories and trade them DOES give this game some new ideas! it deserves some more rating reviewing! and reconsidering
Metro Last Light is an example of an totally linear game where the possibilities of exploration are so rich and varied that one actually might play the game for that alone. That is totally missing in Remember Me. It might be considered useful, since you immediately know that when you can deviate from the path, there`s a collectible in that direction. Apart from that, it`s a straight line from start to finish, and it doesn`t even FEEL like a riddle. Go where you can, and you get there for sure.
I think Capcom needs to sell this game to Quantic Dream to give it true justice..IMO it's both hit and miss..the memory rewind is amazing..but then everything else just looks like a copy and paste from Uncharted..I think if Quantic Dream rebooted or renamed this game and brought back out..itd be a huge success..they specialize in these type of games..and yes Im a Heavy Rain mark..but honestly can you blame me..the game was all beautiful, sad and brilliant at the same time!
Linearity isn't inherently bad. But there's a difference between being linear and being almost on-rails. BioShock Infinite and Metro: Last Light were linear games, but they gave you enough room to breathe, and explore their worlds to a satisfying enough extent. Remember Me cramps you up in corridors and alleyways which is particularly annoying 'cause its world is so beautiful. Didn't have to be a sandbox, but it could've taken the BioShock Infinite approach to it. Still a good game though.
Quick question: Why does this game get pounded by so many things to which the Uncharted series apparently gets a free ticket and scores in the upper 9's? Not only does the series boast itself as part adventure game, but you're also treasure hunter in Uncharted, an explorer looking for ancient and hidden artifacts and secrets; no use saying it's any less enticing to have a more open level design there as well.
The world is greatly realized and breathtaking at points, but the linear design always breaks the illusion of a living world. Dontnod is really great at making convincing worlds.
Damn, maybe a Remember Me 2 would live up to the potential of the premise,I so wanted this game to be great, having said that I still might get this one not sure though,I love the cyberpunk style Neo-Paris.
After seeing this review I was very happy. When I first saw the game I was not that interested, but after seeing it a bit more I was really hoping the review would go down well and it seems it did. I didn't but Tomb Raider so I think I'll get this instead, but I will wait for the price to go down a bit until I buy it.
+TheSpore35 They're not really all THAT comparable. Only the platforming is similar, nothing else. Combat is mostly melee here, and there's a clear sci-fi tone (as opposed to adventurous). Like the review says, the greatest moments of the entire game are the memory manipulation segments, which unfortunately aren't prominent enough. The reason I played this game, is because the developer's follow-up game (Life is Strange) was so magnificent and such an absolute masterpiece that I felt I had to check out what came before it. With that game, Remember Me shares some positive similarities as well, such as not being afraid to make the main character female (without sexualizing her) and emphasizing emotion and humanity in its narrative. A 7/10 is completely correct for this game, so if you have time to spare and can find it for very cheap, you might enjoy it.
I'm disappointed with the linear environments. I was hoping we were going to get to explore the city a little more. The concept, main character, and combat look awesome though so I'll definitely still check it out. I just wish the story held out because it would make the linearity of game much more forgiving.
The camera is so ridiculously hard to maneuver while in a battle, but I still love the game, DEFINITELY could have been better. Actually one of the most recent games I was anticipated to play since the recent dry spell of game releases until next gen comes out.
I can actually agree with everything they said there. I'm at 63% completion and so far I'm really enjoying the game. But I can't help but feel so caged in. It actually drives me nuts some times. And the mini puzzles are just cumbersome and boring and require no actual thought process. There wasn't a single puzzle I didn't figure out in a heart beat, so instead of being a fun challenge it simple became a point to slow down the game play. Overall I would recommend it, but wait until it's $20.00
I almost brought this but im now finding it hard to part with 39.99 for a single player game thats not really open world. When you have xbox arcade games with worse gaphics but getter game mechanics and more options. Ill wait until its 14.99
I enjoy the setting and story of this game so far but the combat system is really confusing and the UI is awkward as fuck especially in the combo lab. I have two rows of combos on my combo lab (which I assume means I have two combos to choose from?) but my character only seems to be performing one of them (the one you get at the start) I must be missing something because it hasn't been explained properly at all. I had to do that tutorial fight without healing.
I think its more people using the review system wrong, some journalists have got into the habit of being overly generous with review scores which causes people to think any score under 8 is bad.
I can't agree with everything being said here. Remember Me IS special. I totally agree that the game world is sadly restrictive, but that frustration is a testament to how incredible the setting, and design of the world is - you truly want to see more. I hope a sequel may change that Reviewers seem to knock the story also... The story is incredible! I can't recall the last time I played a game that had that much emotional and moral depth! I believe many reviewers simply didn't play to the end.
it's obvious that you didn't listen to a word the reviewer said. This is a good game, hence 7/10. 9/10 would put it on the level of an Uncharted or Bioshock which it isn't far from but doesn't quite have the same quality. Still, this game is very enjoyable and if they made a sequel I'm sure it would be even better.
