I wish GameStop would stop fucking up, they have cool employees. Last week, this employee brought his Switch to the store. He showed me a lot of features and we played Street Fighter on it for awhile. It convinced me to get one.

So Gamestop's "Elite Pro" is $60 for a year and %s off used games while Best Buy's Gamer Club is $30 for 2 years and 20% off new games and gets more Best Buy reward points...yeah, kinda no brainer there....

For $30 you get 2 year club membership with Best Buy. You get points for rewards and 20% off new games plus other stuff. A base game costs $59.99 Thats $12 you save with Best Buy. Do the math and with 3 games you buy you've already gotten your moneys worth in savings. Gamestop is a joke. Sucks because my store has some really cool people. Thats the only reason I stop by from time to time.

This is what they should have instead: 25% off on pre-owned games 10% off on new games 10% on every order from online Extra 5% off on pre-ordered games 50 points for every dollar spent. Buy one, get one free(can be stacked over on one use) Buy two, get one free(3 time use) 3x of entries for rewards Free 500 points for upgrade As a bonus: 50% off on your next pre-order game of any choice for a month This would help a lot. It gives you a reason to preorder as well as shopping online(since you can grab games at a lower price). Plus on that coupon with the stack, someone can come in with loads of money and just go crazy because 50% of the games they buy will be for free, which is good. You can get your value back quickly as well plus it gives them money as well. Win-Win right there...

How is GameStop still a thing?

They pay low money for trading in last gen games. They basically give 20% off last gen games (almost all of them can be treated as pre-owned at this point). They have that Buy 2 Get 1 Free Pre-Owned. They are literally behind the times in both product and practice. Why are they still around?

As much as I agree that Gamestop definitely didn't do what people were wanting and you're mostly right AlphaOmegaSin, there is one point I would make from personal knowledge on the subject... The reason why Gamestop has probably done this in the way they have is because the amount of profit on a new game is tiny, in some cases as low as $10-$15 on new games which means that they can't really offer the discount on new games. Why can Amazon offer the discount on new games? They get preferential prices that are lower than what Gamestop can buy it for. So their solution was to offer discount instead on something that there is a hell of a lot more profit on - used games.

Most of GameStop's revenue comes from preowned because we get to keep all the profits as a company, where as new games the vendors get almost all of the money. Still shit to work there though, it's not like most stores see those profits. Recently all of the store owners had an all expenses paid trip to fucking Vegas for conferences as a working vacation, and anyone below that is just stuck at our shitty stores.

Back in the 90's there used to be a gaming store called FuncoLand. It was candyland for gamers, and you always left the store with a smile on your face. I miss the 90's.

We have a Gaming Warehouse here in Michigan where they have a lot of old game systems and games. Also a Vidiots and a Disc Traders, all that have older systems and games.

This is without taking into account the fact that you're going to quickly see Best Buy AND Amazon do away with the 20% off deal entirely. Best Buy and Amazon are LOSING money on every new game they sell under those programs. Your suggestion for GameStop to IMPROVE revenue is to LOSE money. Best Buy, Amazon, and Wal-Mart COMBINED don't make as much revenue as GameStop does when it comes to video game software, hardware, and digital sales. These companies aren't "chipping" away at GameStop's market share -- the digital space is. Amazon and Best Buy are utilizing video games as a form of loss leaders to TRY and make a dent into GameStop's marketshare, but GameStop still retains over 70% of the actual market. AMZ and BBY do this because they can make up that loss revenue with their other avenues of merchandising -- but it's proving to be inefficient, which is why you've seen Amazon take the steps and change the way their Prime service works in regards to VG software. Your lack of understanding the economics of these businesses is astounding.

Interestingly here in Switzerland we have an entirely different rewards system, in which you get xp for the Stuff you buy and when you reach the next level you get some benefits like 10% more for used games you sell them

The only reason I always renew my Power Up Rewards membership ($14 dollars a year btw) is because of Game Informer. I have absolutely no reason to "upgrade"

Here in the UK we have a game shop that does a similar thing. It costs £36 a year and you get extra money for trade ins etc. But if you dont gain over what you paid (£36) they give you the difference back.

Alpha I had the same problem with Kiwami. I had pre ordered it on Amazon months in advance. I check on the 29th to track it and see if it's on the way and nope it hasn't even finished preparing for shipment. I cancelled that shit, went to gamestop, and had a discount and I left with Yakuza for like 20 bucks. Steelbook and everything but yet Amazon couldn't have that shit on my doorstep on release? Whatever, I always in store pre order everything. Online pre ordering is fucked, not just with shipping, but I've had special editions be cancelled on me at the last second because they couldn't fulfill the quanity.

So Amazon does give the discount on collectors editions. I just checked the Yakuza 6 song of life edition and it comes up to $71.99 which is the 20% off. Sometimes it doesn't show up right away on brand new listings, but they'll update before the game actually ships and charges.

Working for a GameStop competitor in the pre-owned market (and our individual store is located directly down a hill from a GameStop)... I can tell you, they're not winning the pre-owned market either. In our town, there's regularly nobody in the GS parking lot, save for the days when a huge release is out. Our lot is usually at least halfway full and we have several regulars. It seems that they're more geared towards merchandise than games nowadays. It's sad really, especially when you're old enough to think back on how they used to be.
