I see quite a few comments saying this idea is stupid because: •Still need dedicated GPUs: Connect a full desktop GPU to this with a USB4/Thunderbolt adapter! They're available under $150. Thunderbolt 2 didn't have great results, there's not a lot of Thunderbolt 3 coverage, but it is MUCH better. CPU difference is bigger than a thunderbolt vs PCIex16 difference for performance. •Cooling/Throttling: Tops out at 80--82c. The UM790 Pro uses liquid metal. A Mini PC will generally have better cooling than a laptop. •Not enough RAM: Mine has 64GB, with 6GB dedicated to the iGPU (adjustable in system settings) •Can't upgrade: Intel gives up to 1 future generation of CPU upgrade. Granted, AMD has better history with Ryzen 1000 to 5000, but there's limited motherboard compatibility in many cases.

..At the price of a gaming PC. With limited upgrade capability. Everything external. I'm good. I'm fine with being able to run the latest games and productivity software on a nearly 10 year old GTX graphics card. Raytracing doesn't add much to the experience.

Yes, we already have tricks like screen-space effects which are good enough while also being cheap enough.

I agree with your point - it makes more sense to me to get the PC that meets your needs, rather than just chasing the newest and/or fastest upgrades. Even much older harware is surprisingly capable if you can bring yourself to adjust the settings. My most recent GPU purchase was a used GTX 1660ti to upgrade a GTX 770 as I just couldnt justify spending 2.5x the money on a new 3060/ 4060/ rx7600 - new would have been faster yes, but it wasnt worth it to me - what I got instead was plenty good/ fast enough. And of course, I cascaded the 770 to another PC so we can play co-op.

That's okay, go on and traverse from custom PCs to other areas. But PC isn't dead. Try running Gray Zone Warfare or similar modern demanding games on your mini PC. If Android gaming is more enticing to you, that's fine. But PC still has the WAY more immersive games and the biggest range of genre specific games.

Stupid concept for real gamers. You will always need a dedicated GPU.

Cool video. You mentioned Minecraft with shaders and high res texture packs and I was hoping to see you boot that up on the PC, I still very much would if you're considering a follow up video. :)
@Splarkszter

HighRes resource packs may be an issue. Bandwith may not be enough and also 16GB of system memory won't cut it.

iGPU is always a mistake. An RX6600 is VERY cheap. You can get a PC with 600 bucks(and yes with the RX6600) and upgrade everything in the future. (And even better, a 6650XT) The MiniPC alone costs 600 already. Like being at least 2X slower on the GPU side (even without accounting for memory constraints for the iGPU) People, please don't take advice from this video. He even says it "this laptop grade CPU" then just buy the laptop with the same APU for the same price.

Depending on the laptop, that might be poor advice due to thermal throttling. It's best to make comparisons that consider similar conditions and specifications. Also, the decision depends on the end user's needs and budget. Additionally, the RX6600 consumes more power than the mini PC being discussed.

You've missed the point, MiniPC's are a commodity now, upgrading is pointless, easier and better to just replace on occasion with a newer model. The days of home builds, useless for all but the most extreme needs. You don't need a customer PC and GPU anymore, the MiniPC's are fast enough for all your needs.

This video is entirely anecdotal and I feel it is terrible advice. It seems more that your interests and needs have shifted rather than tech has peaked. You can build a gaming PC for WELL under $700 that will absolutely destroy any mini-PC for gaming, let alone $1,000, and there are a lot of people that have zero interest in gaming on their phone. Just because you've found a use case for it and you're enjoying those types of games, doesn't mean everyone, or even a majority of gamers will as well. As for your productivity perspective, there's a lot more than the CPU at play here that will determine your experience in video editing. And using rendering is a less useful benchmark as a video editor. Thanks to the higher clock speeds, and IPC increase, I'm not surprised it's faster in rendering. But how does it perform with GPU effects? What is the timeline experience like? What if I want to use Fusion? What about color grades? What about time dilation? This is such a narrow perspective and it isn't a very realistic take. It's better than your 5950X in one aspect, and it ignores the rest of the system and the rest of the editing experience. This might be fine for pretty basic editing, but once someone starts to get somewhat serious, I'm certain they would find that it isn't adequate. This is an opinion piece with very little context, facts or testing to back it up and I feel like it gives out bad advice as a result.

@@Gnaritas42 Aww, where did my comment hurt you? I can use stupid logic too, in an attempt to be a little edgy. This video didn't hurt me, but when you title a video like that, expect that it's going to get some attention and you better be able to back the claim up or deal with the criticism. He didn't back it up, and I just want to make sure people aren't being misinformed... because that's what this video is doing.
