Linus is a big fan of handheld PCs and regularly carries around an Ayaneo, so when GPD sent over their new GPD Win 4 with a sweet slide out keyboard and some beefy specs, Linus knew he had to check it out.

For android phone was an LG ally, then a Droid 4. Then another Droid 4 when that one died cause there were no good alternatives. Then the Moto Z Force in the hopes a keyboard module would be made. Almost made it there in a kickstarter but it died cause Motorola screwed over the teams. Then an F(x)tec Pro1 rose from those ashes, but it just wasn't for me and kinda buggy. Waited so long for Project ARA only for Google to kill it. Kept up on a few other modular-type phones in the hopes of one making it and enough people wanting keebs. But finally gave up after my Z Force died and the Pro1 just wasn't working out, now I'm on a Note 20 Ultra. During the 5ish years I had the Z Force I got used to using Swype, so that helped me transition to using screen typing only hut ugh, still miss the physical hardware keyboards though. As someone who only observes the handheld market, this is the first one where I'm actually like "wow". Not just because of the device itself but also the realization how far we've come in terms of handheld performance. I would be very interested in a video trying out potential use cases for this as the "main personal computer", with various docking configs.
@DenilsonSa
@DenilsonSa Год назад
I used GPD Win 2 as the main personal computer, plugged to USB-C and connected to external display. It works quite well. I'd expect the same from GPD Win 4, and I'd say it will be likely on par with Steam Deck. Main complaint regarding the GPD Win 2 (docked) was the heat and the loud fan. And the battery life (as in how long until the battery starts to bulge and needs to be replaced).

I bought a gaming PC about 2 years ago. Not a huge thing but it's been able to play everything I have thrown at it. The processor in the GPD 4 may be a touch stronger than what I have in my huge PC. It's crazy. When I get my GPD4 I think I may actually consider getting an Egpu and take the 2070 Super in my PC and just dock my GPD4 to it and use it as my main computer all the time.

@@DenilsonSa The GPD4 apparently is a beast when it comes to cooling. Surprisingly quiet fan and I saw videos comparing games on both the Deck and GPD and the temperature were a steady 70c for the Deck while the GPD4 was around 50c.

@@DenilsonSa If you want your GPD devices to last longer. Make sure to use something like the Power Control Panel app. These devices if left to their own free will will ramp up wattage usage for something as simple as a background update. My GPD Win Max 2021 probably lost a lot of its life simply because of that. Now I have it throttled to 8W and for everyday usage its plenty of power. Just need to switch profile when I want to game. @Pasi123
@Pasi123 Год назад
@@JoeyPerleoni I still have Win8.1 on mine but sadly the support ended just recently. I'd say the most annoying things about the Stream 7 are: only one microUSB port and no separate charging port, only 1GB RAM and 32GB eMMC, and no other input methods than the touchscreen. I love the fact that the Steam 7 can be charged from a normal cheap power back or even from a PC USB port but a dedicated charging port would have been a nice addition so that it would be possible to use a USB hub while charging the tablet. The tablet also needs a working battery to even boot so if/when the battery dies the tablet won't boot even when connected to a charger. I'm not sure if a separate charging port would have made it possible to use it even without a battery like how it's on most laptops. Some other cheap Windows tablets also had a microHDMI port which would have been nice to have too. 1GB RAM was already really low when the tablet was new so an Atom Z3735F with 2GB RAM would have been nice. 32GB storage is also low for desktop Windows but tbh most more expensive Android tablets still had 16GB storage, heck even the iPad Pro 2015 had 32GB on the base model and unlike the Steam 7 it didn't have a memory card slot. And for the input methods I think a small trackpad and mouse buttons next to the display would have been nice (like on a HTC Shift) but those are more of UMPC features. Something similar to the Surface Pen would have been nice but that obviously would have been too expensive. Some small (official) qwerty keyboard case would have been nice too. To this day the Steam 7 is still the smallest PC that I have and the only one that can be charged with any USB charger or power bank. It can even run BioShock (2007) although at quite low frame rate Edit: I completely forgot the 32bit EFI which makes it impossible to run 64bit Windows on it. But that's the same on every Bay-Trail tablet. Linux 64bit works though because it doesn't require a 64bit EFI.

@@overlordmarkus That ignores the market the Switch is aiming for, though. Most people who are buying something like a Switch aren't, in fact, computer geeks who are wanting to homebrew and run emulators and all of that: it's children or their parents, looking for a simple and cheap gaming system they can use without having to do a lot of their own configuration. A base model of one of these costs about the same as buying 3 Switches, so there's the costs there. There's multiplayer on a single system, where in this unit's case you'd have to buy a second controller where there's a lot of Switch games that can use the split joycons. There's the usual idiosyncrasies of configuring games in Windows, and the still to this day spotty controller support in PC versions of a lot of games, and so on and so forth. it's the classic console situation: even when they're weaker, they have their own suite of advantages that let them appeal to a broader market in general.

Cracks me up how much valve used to be the champion of Microsoft, like the entire game of half life was incepted out of a proof of concept that DirectX could actually do the things and better then even a bare metal at the time.. and just over the years it's just been that realization.. like they're not on your side anymore, they're not trying to help you do cool things.. they want you to do their things and they want you to be happy.. and I guess they don't realize that they don't have a cult like Apple.

I think that's the first of those handheld PC that I would classify as a real alternative to the Steam Deck. It's expensive, but I think for once, you actually get more than the Deck and not less. The GPD Win 3 was underpowered compared to the Steam Deck, while having worst battery life and being double the price, same thing for the Aya Neo Next. The Neo Air is also underpowered and more expensive, but it also has a great OLED screen, so it's a sacrifice if you prefer performance or screen quality and size. The Anbernic Win600 is the only one that also runs Steam OS and is around the price of the Deck, which is great, but it also uses an Athlon APU, so it even has difficulties running games like Ori at a constant 30 FPS. There are also the odd ones like the OneXPlayer that have basically the same problems. WIth the GPD Win 4, the Ayn Loki / Loki Max, the Aya Neo 2 and probably others I'm forgetting, it's really cool to finally see some real competition and what Valve will do in response (not that I expect a major update to the Steam Deck in the next year, we'll probably get one with a slightly better screen, better battery life and things like that, but I don't see them abandonning their custom APU after only a year)

Where it begins is a little hazy, so while it's fair to say GPD was on the actual *handheld* part first, Valve followed their suit with intent to stir it up some more after they failed the smaller niche project. @@wanderingbufoon I wouldn't go that far personally, to suggest that traditional desktop PCs are obsolete is a bit of a stretch, especially considering this thing is typically at least $2000. Not to mention the issues that come with egpus and other external components and being hardware bound by this handheld. Handhelds are great and they are probably going to become the preferred method of gaming in the future, but I think that's still many years away.

@wanderingbufoon you can literally build a ultra compact pc with zero performance compromises. People build large pc for aesthetics. We have seen gaming laptops for decades

I have (and still do) quite a few of GPD's devices. I have always been impressed with the hardware. I still use the ORIGINAL GPD Pocket when doing field work. The battery is getting a bit long in the tooth, but otherwise it's rock solid. The GPD XP and GPD XD are my two favorite emulator style devices (8-16bit primarily).

Love the slide out keyboard, reminds me of the Sony umpc that I used to covet back in the day.

I had the Rumor and the first droid with a keyboard it was so god-tier in 2009 haha

How is the keyboard? My biggest complaint about the Win 3 is that the keyboard doesn't really work all of the time. Like I can't press two buttons at the same time and have it register them both. It also doesn't always register every button press. Otherwise, I'm a fan of it.

Would really like to see a video comparing all of these new handheld devices (Onexplayer 2, Ayaneo 2, gpd win 4, etc)

This is cool. Its also the sort of thing that makes me wonder what kind of world of computing we would have if chip fab tech had kept up with Moore's Law from 2000 to today at the same pace that things scaled between 1980 and 2000. These devices, phones, and even thin and light laptops are starting to be mostly cooling and battery when you open them up (in terms of mass and volume).

Looks sweet. The slider should be on top or somewhere else because I could see people accidentally sliding it to game mode or mouse mode. itll be a good steam deck competitor for sure

@shortcircuit there was a vendor at ces that has made a solid state airflow device with amazing psi and flow you might want to look at as a cooling mod for these and in the future as slim active cooling for everything phone, pcps, nvme drives, etc...
