@@lancevance6346 _"Growing up in 2000s, the advancement in games was a lot more noticeable in a very short time."_ I don't think I agree. I think that the introduction of three-dimensional visuals was a pretty significant jump. The most significant jump, to be honest. Super Smash Bros Melee was the last time for a long time where I was genuinely wowed at the fidelity of the visuals in the opening cutscene. The time after that where I was wowed was seeing The Witcher 3 in motion on my computer. Graphics are most often a detriment to gaming, since far too much money is spent on animating minor details that I think should be better spent on making a better game. I have gotten in to games that had great visuals for the time, and games that had great gameplay but did not have impressive visuals, and it's easily the second category that has lasting value and quality for me.

Funny listening to you reminisce over playing zelda with your mom. I did the same but being a bit older it was 8bit nes zelda in the 80's. There were no internet walkthru's, there were nintenda game guides for some of the more popular games and that was about it. We spent hours and hours exploring, testing things, drawing our own dungeon maps and tracking the traps. I can remember zelda II coming out and thinking how advanced it was link could actually jump. Even if it was just 2d side scrolling. Zelda 3 was fun as well.

There is a whole genre of video essay like this one that's really getting under my skin lately. I call it the "I just exited adolescence, haven't yet realized that it's making me incredibly cynical and depressed, and must misdirect those feelings on the false narrative of everything around me declining qualitatively"... genre. It's not that everything is worse, your perspective is just far more pessimistic. And I know this because none of his criticisms are about the games themselves. Just this vague idea that "people used to care about art." That's late teen cynicism if I EVER saw it.
@michael_stocker

I hate most new games, because of the normie gamer. Those games are full off exploitative stuff like micro transactions, because the masses keep buying that sht. It has completely ruined gaming for me. But just like Asmon said, its all because so many people support it. Companies will always do whatever is more profitable, whatever the consumers want to pay for the most.

@jeanjacques9365 Год назад
yeah its more of a memory of a time period and how they felt then : having nothing else than going to school and then running home to play games thing. The games are objectively not better then than now its just that you experienced them differently as an adult. It's also why kids dont like retro gaming and love their current games its nor the games themselves that changed the most its you as an individual and it's hard to accept that.
@Kratos-eg7ez
@Kratos-eg7ez 11 месяцев назад
So you think gaming is amazing as a whole right now? I doubt it, if you do then you need to play some of these video games he's talking about, cuz they're bad. It ain't even being pessimistic, it's looking at reality. So stop trying to use all these labels to completely discredit his opinion, and if your living in a different reality post a video about it explaining what YOU think gaming is like right now. Unless your afraid of online criticism, which is funny since you have no fear about criticizing others.
@jeanjacques9365
@jeanjacques9365 11 месяцев назад
@@Kratos-eg7ez Take a deep breathe and calm down. Commenting takes less than 5 minutes making a video that is proper take days at a minimum so yes it's normal for him to comment instead of making videos especially if the person doesn't really try to convince people he's right. Pointing out a biais is not saying the video is shit it's saying that as in any time in history people prefer things from their childhood and early life regardless of the progresses that were made. Acknowledging that shouldn't be impossible and saying things were not as perfect as you remember them to be doesn't mean that today is perfect it's saying that you are comparing an idealized view of the past to reality and comparing idealized version of anything to reality is doing a disservice to your point. I like games from my childhood. I love them but i realize that they are not quintessentially better than newer games they just appeal to my nostalgia and after playing them for a while i go back to newer games. Same goes for games from the 80s i played with my uncle, he loves them and i enjoy playing them in his company but i wouldn't play them by myself the games are better or worse depending on who showed them to you, who played them with you and how talks about them with you. That's why games from your childhood you shared with all your best friends feel better than newer games when your friends have more responsibilities, stopped playing video games or aren't as passionate about them anymore. The fact there are more games than ever also skews the perspective, back then there was 1-2 games per year that were making a dent if that so EVERYONE played those and going back to sharing your experience with others, it makes them feel better. Now people have so much choices they don't know what to play and that's why fortnite was so popular and people look fondly on when it came out, because for the first time in a long time EVERYONE played the same game. Online ranks and youtube lets play, or pro players also made many people feel less good about games because back then you could be prideful about being the best in your neighbourhood, your friends or your school but now when the best player is silver well it doesn't feel as prestigious as it did back then when the best in the neighbourhood felt like he was the best in the world.

@@chaost4544 Honestly it is not that hard once you figure it out. The combat has some cons for sure, like never getting a combo off because even the most unskilled fighter is just going to do a perfect counter so you can only get 2-3 swings in. This limits you to the low level combos. You are better off just raising strength then spamming clinching and getting a few hits in after, rinse and repeat, the enemy won't even be able to hit you. The good thing is though that this isn't fool proof, but even on the hardest difficulty in the beginning of the game you can win the Rattay Tourney as soon as its available as long as you do the training with ?Bernard? (I think) Of course anything where you are outnumbered gets dicey but clinching still works, however better off just playing defensive and perfect countering til they die. For me combat is the last reason I play Kingdom Come, for me its the immersion, the attention to detail, the fact you even have to learn to read and it has an effect on the game itself. The ability to make decisions that have changes to the game and story. I also just love being the best medieval thief around. Honestly need to finish the story, it is good but I always end up just running around doing whatever lol.

The issue isn't the "state of gaming" or that "gaming isn't fun anymore", the biggest issue is the amount of backlog most people have. Sensory overload on most people's Steam library is what kills their drive. If you started going through your backlog of games you purchased on sale/bundle etc you'd find quite a few treasures. Hard West 1 & 2 being one of mine, newer early access hits like Zero Sievert, etc. People say "gaming sucks now" but then play the same F2P titles/MMOs ad nauseum (League, Valorant/CS, WoW, FF etc). Gaming isn't bad now, indie games still hit the spot and of course games like Elden Ring & God of War hold the AAA thrones. People confuse their feelings of gaming when a kid with no responsibility vs being an adult. Gaming isn't the issue, your perspective is.

I do believe gaming can still be fun. From personal experience, people who I am friends with who still find gaming to be quite enjoyable are among those remain almost blissfully unaware of industry trends and the like. It's not uncommon to hear about how much more fun games were as a kid. A lot of it is, of course, the element of nostalgia, a lot of it came down to well... just how much time someone spent with X or Y game, developing a fondness for it. There are plenty of factors, but for me, I think the advent of social media and the general sort of "awareness" that comes with it, has played a part in diminishing my enjoyment of the medium over time. I mean, think about it. If you were growing up in the mid-90s/early-00s, it's very likely that you just weren't as "wired" as kids/teens are nowadays. Do you think 12-year-old me ever wondered about what "crunch" even was? Or whether or not so-and-so in Nintendo got caught in sexual assault allegations, or whether X or Y or Z developer was involved in scummy practices... No. Of course not. 12-year-old me was sailing from Dragon Roost Island to Forest Haven. The hell did I care about company layoffs or brutal working conditions? "That ain't video games." I would have likely said. I do have to qualify all this by stating that I do not by any means intend to belittle the *crucible* that is working in the video game industry. The struggles people take part in are very much real, as are the people that go through them. It's just my 12-year-old self was too much of a dumb kid to see beyond the games. That said, it is the very fact that we "see beyond" the games which diminishes my enjoyment of them. The constant exposure to scandals, drama, and other video game-adjacent talk... well, it wears on you. I think it's perfectly healthy to recognize when "X or Y is happening in the industry" but also to just... step away from it. And hell, maybe taking a break from games altogether might help somewhat, who knows :P

"The Golden Era of Gaming" was in the 90s and early 2000s because that's when the people who do the remembering were children. As an adult you can obviously enjoy games a ton, but you will never look at them the same way you did when you were a child because you're not the same person.

No, they were just more innovative, creative, passionate and willing to take risks back then - after all, the transition into 3D was an insane ride and the industry wasn't completely dominated by corporate suits and shareholders just yet. It also helps that they weren't quite as rampant with soulless capitalism antics as they are today with microtransactions, P2W, gacha, lootboxes, battle passes, cash shops or just releasing completely unfinished, unpolished, buggy games and THEN forcing players to buy the completed versions of said games through rereleases or expansion updates. IMO, the only truly scummy business practices back then were arcades, paid monthly online services for MMOs, and silly/pointless gaming accessories & peripherals. When it came to bad games back in the day - you could rely on gaming journalists for an honest opinion back then or better yet - just rent a game for $5 for a WHOLE WEEK and see if it was worth a full purchase. You can't do any of that today (except rely on honest community reviews (as journalists were compromised years ago,) use emulation to play the classics or uh... sail the seven seas on PC (thank god these three options exist.)
@Lukaz1989
@Lukaz1989 Год назад
@@alexs29 Yes, I'm absolutely with you when it comes to things like toxic monetization. Can't wait for the EU crackdown on gambling in video games. However, I fundamentally disagree with some of the points you made. Please hear me out. Developing and publishing a game has never been more accessible, you have individual devs publishing games that sell millions of copies, a teenager can learn game development on RU-vid and all the tools to do so are free. And they do! It shows, we keep having fantastic indie successes that are made by small teams or even individual devs. Not only game development but gaming itself has been democratized to a crazy degree, some of the most popular and best games out there are completely free to play. You can play great games on hardware anybody can afford and older but still fantastic titles are on steep sales all the time -- a thing that we take for granted nowadays, but back in the day if you wanted a specific (older) game and your store didn't have it, good luck! You have things like Gamepass that give you a huge value, tons of games and new titles you can play for very reasonable subscription fee. All of these things put more great games in the hands of more gamers, and the number of gamers keeps growing! The same goes for content creation around gaming. Maybe you think game journalists used to be more reliable back then, but as somebody who has been reading gaming magazines since the 90s I think the sheer volume and quality of information you can get on games nowadays dwarfs anything we had in the past. Maybe you were able to read a good, well written review by a reputable game journalist that featured a couple of screenshots but nowdays you can watch 1000 people play a new game and talk about them live within seconds. You can find a huge number of independent reviewers with lots of integrity giving you their honest opinion. You have huge communities for even the most niche games and user reviews to a degree that simply didn't exist in the past. You never have to buy any game without being informed about it and if you do and it sucks you just refund it. In terms of innovation, new tech like UE5 has extremely promising potential to help create games that look better than ever before. Crossplay games allow gamers to play together no matter which hardware they have, even if its just a phone. This wasn't even imaginable 20 years ago. The number of games released every year keeps climbing and existing games getting new content is almost expected at this point. Beyond "conventional gaming", you have new technologies like VR that (despite still having some way to go) keep getting better and better, there are VR games that are so mind blowing even my 80 year old dad can't help but be astonished. The reality is, there is more innovation, creativity and passion in gaming today than ever before and if you don't see it, brother, you haven't been looking!

To be fair, it wasn't bad when I went to school, but if you were a nerd and people knew it, you got bullied. On passion from fellow developers. Everything is a remake or sequel because almost everything is financially driven and investors are risk averse. The market will choose safe mass-appeal which in practice means whatever already has demonstrated sales. The problem with this is that copies will often latch on to one or two features they think made the original thing successful, it isn't trying to be its own thing or its own statement, its trying to chase a trend and because of that its inauthentic. This is the same problem with movies and TV.

The most fun I've had gaming in the last 5 years was indie games, stuff like Vampire Survivors, Dwarf fortress, FTL, Dusk, Darkest Dungeon, Valhiem or even just really old school games like Blood from 1997. I got the early access for Gloomwood and I put 40 hours into it and it's basically just a long demo at this point. It's absolutely amazing so far and as much as I recommend you try it I'd say wait till it's fully released. It's like Thief the Dark Project mixed with Resident Evil 4. Its a horror game, interactive sim, mostly stealth but there are also guns so you can rush through it just blasting dudes. Got a sweet suitcase inventory management system. Best part is on the hardest difficulty which they added not long ago, you have to use a consumable wax cylinder to save at a phonograph like the Resident Evil ink ribbons. Just writing this makes me want the go play it some more it's so damn good, but it so much better experiencing it for the first time, I almost wish I had waited till release but I would buy and gift multiple copies just to support the development and get that shit released sooner lol

The difference for me compared to the old days when internet existed, is that games was purely fun & entertainment. If you play games nowadays it's more about going around doing daily tasks that you might not want to do, login in to not miss daily rewards even perhaps from battlepasses you've payed for, grinding unlocks and levels.. And so on. That's what I miss from the good old days, I could fire up Quakeworld and do what I wanted, either I practised rocket & bunny jumping on DM4/DM6 or joined a duel or FFA. Or fired up BF1942 to spend yet another couple of hours in El Alamein, Bocage or Wake Island. All because I wanted to, not because a daily quest or login reward told me to do so. I didn't have to load up games I had no interest of playing that day, and what I did in game was purely based on how I wanted to play - not because something forced me into a game, a certain play style, map or similar. Today's games requires you to keep up, or pay up. Or preferably both. You can blame toxic behaviour a lot on anonymity and stuff like that, but a big reason is people doing multiplayer sessions because they're more forced to today. It's more stress & boredom to keep up, it's more work. They want their 3 wins to complete the daily quest, so they after can chose to play how they want. They just want to do their hours to unlock Darth Vader, so they after can play the game how they want. They're not in your game for fun & entertainment, they're in your game because they're forced to be. I never had a daily quest in BF1942 to win 3 games, that's why it was more fun to play even when losing badly. Sure, we all prefered to win or at least have a close game, but it was still more fun. Because no one felt like they wasted their time as it didn't count towards a daily quest. If you had 30-60 minutes to spare one evening, you didn't feel the stress of having to complete a daily quest during those minutes. It was all just fun & entertainment.

Back in highschool if you played the OG cod games you didn't get bullied but if you played something like Terraria you would or Minecraft you would. A nerdy guy tried to explain to me how cool Terraria was and I disregarded it because it didn't seem cool at the time (because he wasn't considered "cool"). God how wrong I was... 10 years later I was recommended the game again so I tried it out. I have 400 hours in Terraria and I feel like I can always go back to play more. Genuinely one of the best experiences I've ever had playing a video game. The takeaway here is because I wanted to fit in I missed out on something I otherwise would have really enjoyed. Wish I could see that guy again and tell him how right he was and how I wish I'd have given his recommendation a chance.

Almost every big budget game I play, while maybe still enjoyable, feels like something I already played hundreds of times before. Usually because I have. My favourite genres has gone from platformers, to jrpgs, to survival horror, to military shooters, to open world rpgs, to immersive sims, and as of now my favourite genre is probably indie walking sims. I've always mostly played for the story and the best ones in that regard that I can think of in recent memory are SOMA and What remains of Edith Finch, and Death Stranding was one of my favourites of last gen. So when is my golden age of gaming? For me it's always the present, because there has never been a greater library of games to choose from than right now. Fomo as well as peer pressure. You MUST play the same game your friends play, you MUST buy unique skins if you don't want them to laugh at you. As a kid you want to fit in with your group and you end up emptying your parents' account because how could you not, "everyone does it".

@@strsocerplaya9 I think your underestimating the potential affects. Ya but the transition is different. Learning curve is skewed because skills transfer. Experience and immersive is subjective to what we already know and experience. I believe its just mostly old people who experience this issue. Its like taking Weed vs Cocaine as your first drug. Obviously Cocaine would hit harder. And it would be different if you were already a drug user or not. I think your underestimating the potential affects how it influences you as a person and how it affects people around you that also affect how games culture develop

@@AK255. ...I dont do drugs so I cant relate to what you're talking about with that analogy. I'm not young or old and I can appreciate both old and new games. If i havent played it, I havent played it. Unless you're talking about someone that has never ever played a game before, the learning curve is also not that big. Games are mainstream. Even toddlers play games on their parent's phone. I remember going from pc gaming to console and it was awkward but after a few hours, that was it. And that's a bigger jump than just going between games on the same console.

Resident Evil 4: VR Mode on PSVR2 has been absolutely incredible. I'm having the video game time of my life right now. lol You can't get an experience like that on some flat 65" OLED TV. Pancake gaming is getting kid of stale imo, i'm far more interested in the potential of VR & AR since both have so much room for growth, and it's the only place where stereoscopic 3D exists, life sized characters & environments, and motion controls that surpass anything on consoles.

I loved Halo 3, still my favorite and most played game to date. I think some of it is nostalgia, the time I had to play (I was in high school), and having most of my friends playing too. Still, I have not played a game since that felt like Halo 3.

The innovation in gaming over the last 10 years has been monetization. Not "How can we make the game fun", but "how can we get more money out of the same product." That being said, as others have mentioned, there are a lot of innovative and fun games outside of triple-A developers.

There are a ton of fun games out right now. Elden Ring came out last year. Like, if you focus on the games that upset you or disappoint you, then yeah, you're gonna come to the conclusion that games are being ruined, but there were bad games in the 90's and 2000's, but when doing a retrospective, you're not going to go over the duds, you go over the greatest hits.

@christianokoye9491
@christianokoye9491 Год назад
@@Kitth3n well I can agree with the innovation part, but that's partly because the profit motive has been largely refined. Games are more expensive than ever to produce and flopping can sink a studio. So if you want innovation it won't be in the mainstream, because the mainstream has been largely defined and refined.

I got bullied in school, but never for playing video games, I was just weird. But, there were definitely times where people would ask WHAT games I played, and any time i would mention Nintendo titles, (Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, even JRPGS like Final Fantasy,) I would definitely get weird looks, or excluded from conversations about current gen systems like ps2-3 or xbox 360 games.
