+++ This German language video appeared in May 2021 on my AidanEyewitness channel. I later deleted it and re-uploaded it to my AOR Languages channel +++
++++ ALERT - FACTUAL ERROR AT 3:50 mins - In the text "20,000 Kampfflugzeuge" both the number and 'Kampfflugzeuge' are inaccurate. Please substitute simply 'Tausende Flugzeuge'. ++++
Many thanks to a Canadian-based historian who pointed this out for me.
This is the German version of my visual podcast about the history of Gander Airport, Newfoundland, Canada.
You can activate subtitles in English and German by clicking in the lower right. There is also an English version, look for the links in the video.
This presentation is inspired by a fascinating ZDF documentary I saw on Curiosity Stream. Then I discovered the German version on RU-vid.
The documentary called ‘Der Flughafen am Ende der Welt’ - 'the airport at the end of the world', or in better English, ‘the airport in the middle of nowhere’ and it was directed by Roland May.
I found the story compelling, because it deals with changing times in the aviation industry and the Cold War. There is a link between East Germany and Canada that I wasn't aware of.
I wanted to tell the story in my own words, in English and in German. I wrote the script in German and then produced an English version.
And in the story we learn how an East German couple on their way back home from Cuba, got off the Interflug plane in Gander, entered the departure lounge and never returned to the plane or their homeland.

I used to live in Gander. My dad was in the Canadian military and was based at CFB Gander for a few years. The number of Cubans there at the time ( mid 90s) was crazy. They’d book flights to Russia, and when they stop in Gander to refuel they’d claim refugee status or defect. They were great during Halloween. They gave cash instead of candy.

I am 81. Flew through Gander on 10/7/1948 via Shannon. on the TCA Canadair4 Service LHR(North) to Toronto [There had been a power outage at Shannon and we took-off with a flame path of Oil Drums.].

Wow, I'm very impressed. You experienced the pioneering days of transatlantic aviation! A flame path of oil drums, that's a very striking memory. I read in Wikipedia it was unpressurised, very noisy but the Canadair 4 was 100mph faster than other DC4s. Still, a very long flight stopping at Shannon and Gander. I landed at Shannon a couple of years ago and about 20 years earlier, I departed on an Aeroflot IL-96 for Moscow. Things have changed since then. My parents lived not far away in Co Limerick. My dad, born 1908, often used to talk about Shannon Airport. I'd still love to visit Gander. Many many thanks - you saw the German version of the video, I also have the English version on my @AidanEyewitness channel.
