++++ ALERT - FACTUAL ERROR AT 4:00 mins - In the text "20,000 fighter planes" both the number and 'fighter planes' are inaccurate. Please substitute simply 'thousands of aircraft'. ++++
Many thanks to a Canadian-based historian who pointed this out for me.
This is the English version of my visual podcast on the history of Gander Airport. Gander is located in Newfoundland in the far north east of Canada and North America and has a remarkable history.
Please activate the subtitles in English and German by clicking in the lower right. There is also an German version, look our for the links in the top right during the video.
This podcast is inspired by a very interesting ZDF documentary I saw on the documentary streaming service Curiosity Stream. Then I found that someone had put the German version on RU-vid. I watch
The documentary is called in English ‘The Airport in the Middle of Nowhere’ and it was directed by Roland May.
I found the story of great interest, because it deals with the ups and downs of the the aviation industry in the post war years, as well as the intrigue arising from the Cold War. There is a link via Gander between East Germany and Canada, which I hadn't been aware of before watching this documentary.
I was so taken with the story that I wanted to tell the story in my own words, using English and German. I wrote the script in German and then from that I produced the English version.
The story about the East German couple is fascinating and thought-provoking. I've selected some very interesting archive public domain images and I've used some photos of Gander Airport in recent years, courtesy of Gander International Airport.
In this video I present my new airport-themed channel ident and concept. I present the introduction and conclusion sitting in my virtual editorial office overlooking the airport. It's not real of course. I have created it using the magic of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. I will give more information about the background to the channel in other videos.

Hi Aidan, this is close to my heart. For over 30 years I worked as a Flight Dispatcher at major US carriers. For a big chunk of that time, I was flight planning Transatlantic flights with Boeing 747s, Douglas DC10's and Airbus A330 aircraft. I had to plan for emergency alternate airports enroute, typically coasting out or coasting in, such as Gander, St. Johns, Goose Bay in Canada, Keflavik in Iceland, and Prestwick or Shannon in Scotland and Ireland. Had several flights divert to Gander over the years for one reason or another. Usually a medical emergency and sometimes a mechanical issue. Gander ATC, airport and handling agents were always a joy to work with, no matter what we threw at them, and how little notice we would give them. Occasionally, we would have to send another aircraft and fresh crew to pick them up. I was working on Sept 11th, but by the time I started work, many of the aircraft were already on the ground. I think we had three, maybe four aircraft in Gander for what turned out to be several days. One pilot I knew showed me some pictures from his stay there. He said that all that was said about the population was true, they were so generous and resourceful. They helped turn an impossible situation into something positive for a lot of people.

This is one of my favourite comments on the channel. The Gander video was an early project and it has done well. As a keen fan of aviation it’s great to hear from someone like yourself. I love the story of Gander and would love to visit some day, though it won’t be on a DC-10 on a medical emergency or a Super Constellation with Bob Hope on board stopping to refuel!

I came through Gander in the summer of 1960 on Icelandic Airlines and also at Keflavick Iceland to Luxembourg. Seemed to take nearly 24 hours.

Wow 1960, flying was different then! I think you must have been flying on a 4-propeller Douglas DC6b. Slow and juddery! Great to hear your memory of Gander!

The world needs more places like Gander.

That's a great comment! I wonder if there are any more examples of similar places around the world. The warmth and hospitality shown by the people of Gander after the events of Sept 11th was wonderful. I'd love to go to Gander but it's not an easy or cheap place to get to, especially at the moment. Many thanks for your comment.

@@AidanEyewitness There are some interesting points here. 1. They think they are just ordinary people when clearly they are not. 2. They would most likely do it again tomorrow if they had to. 3. They did it with love and most likely were not fully compensated for their efforts. 4.It is a shame the airlines of the world could not do something to return the favour like give them VIP service when they fly, not that many probably do these days. 5. I am a Kiwi and would like to think that we would help out when needed and on a lesser scale we have in the past but these days NZ is not considered a safe place to travel by world standards.

I lived in Gander in the late 60s and 70s, we lived half a mile from the active R/W and our house use to shake sometimes as an aircraft over flew , day or night we use to run outside to watch these Big aircraft, we got to see the first 747s during cold weather inspections , Plus the concord was stationed there one winter for testing , we were treated every day to an air show . , we even watched an A/C with a engine bellowing smoke and a few flames making an emergency landing , The history of early Navigation is all over Gander ( CYQX ) with street names named for early pilots and a large graveyard dedicated to aviators, you can walk through and see the names of well known pilots and navigators , We dont see a lot of aircraft now days , but pilots are very glad of CYQX when there is an inflight emergency , I always thought i would become an airman but ended up becoming an sailor on a Deep sea rescue and salvage ship for 40+ years , I live in New Brunswick Ca ( CYSJ ) now and am retired , but my wife gets a good Laugh watching me run out side to see any aircraft flying over head , thank you for such a lovely Video.

That’s fantastic. I’m really glad to hear your feedback. I have never been to Canada or Gander. I’d love to go, though there are no Constellations, DC8s or Ilyushin 62s there today! I’m so glad to hear from an aviation professional. I am an aviation fan though I worked at Manchester Airport on the information desk one summer. I got the idea to write the script and make the video after seeing a German documentary about Gander. I still get excited every time I see the Emirates Airbus A380 on its final approach to Manchester (EGCC) twice a day. My wife thinks this is funny! One day I’ll visit Gander!

I was on the second comercial flight between CGN and Hav with a fuel stopover in Gander in 1983. At this time it was still this very big pax-hall who are waiting an have a drink or sandwich. I'll never forget Gander. Thank you.

Wow, that's fascinating Cologne to Havana via Gander. I've never been there but would love to go, maybe I will! I'm glad I was able to bring back memories for you, even though I have never been myself! Unlike the guy from the DDR, you were not tempted to seek political asylum from the Federal Republic of Germany! Many thanks for your comment!

You’re lucky to have experienced that flight with Cubana. Many thanks for sharing!

Tis flight was a CUBANA Il 62M, also very good!

Ah yes Cubana also used the great Soviet IL62 airliner. I flew an Aeroflot IL62M from Moscow to Colombo Sri Lanka, an incredible experience - very LOUD!

@@AidanEyewitness Yeah, the 62 was loud. But the cabin was brighter than 707 oc DC 8 in this time. And the service from the cuban crew was also excellent!

Fun fact. The escalator you see at the end of the passenger lounge at Gander Int. Airport was the first escalator in Canada.

13,000 planes carrying 25,000 passengers (5:00) ?? That's just under an average of 2 passengers per plane.

Yes, that's my stupid mistake. I've posted a notice in the description. I got my figures wrong somewhere. Unfortunately it's not possible to correct a mistake in a video without re-uploading it again and losing all your views and likes.
