One of the more eye-opening moments of this film is seeing Daniel Day-Lewis out-of-the-blue in a minor role.

In preparation for this role, Daniel Day Lewis actually travelled back in time to the 1890s and lived as a working class Boer. To hear him tell it, he actually convinced Gandhi to get off the pavement, such were his powers of persuasion. Of course, Ben Kingsley and Richard Attenborough were having none of it...

I’m So happy Indian Government funded this film. It’s such a proud film showing Indian resolve. Jai Hind
@cultclassic999
@cultclassic999 2 года назад
I saw an interview with Sir. Ben Kingsley. He said that Indian Government absolutely refused to fund a movie where the director and the lead actor was British. Then they found out Ben Kingsley's real name is Krishna Bhanji, and he was born in Gujarat, same state where Gandhi was born. The Indian Government took the position that, if Gandhi's family approved of the role, and the choice of the actor, they will fund the movie. Gandhi's grandson had a lunch with Ben Kingsley. Ben Kingsley showed up in costume, as Gandhi, and that was that. The grandson barely spoke, and left the lunch saying the Hindi equivalent of "good luck" "godspeed" or "go with god" Jai Hind

"You must show courage, be willing to take a blow, several blows, to show you will not strike back, nor will you be turned aside. And when you do that, it calls on something in human nature, something that makes his hatred for you decrease and his respect increase." Next time you get so indignatious you feel like fighting back at your "enemy", just think about that.

The exact context of "Turn the other cheek" refers to the roman practice of putting an individual back in his place (that is, below you) by using the back of your right hand to strike his face. You NEVER used your left to touch anyone's face because it was considered inferior. And you never touched anyone's face with your palm because that symbolized recognizing the person as your equal. When Christ challenged people to turn the other cheek, it meant instead of conceding you've been knocked back down to "your place", face the individual again, because he'll certainly break his wrist trying to hit the other side of your face!
