I never liked how Strauss made money, praying on those who couldn’t pay. And maybe people in the gang didn’t like him but he wasn’t inherently evil or bad. @Sleep Paralysis Demon I agree that it was pretty bad. And while I don’t agree with their methods if you really take an in-depth look into the characters and their reasonings I think you’ll find they have an it’s us or them mentality. Arthur is a perfect example, overall he is an incredibly good person who has lived through a rough life, he does bad things and hurts people not to hurt them but rather because he makes the gang a priority. In his mind even though they do bad things it’s for the greater good of those he cares about, a willingness to do bad for those you love. And I’m chapter 7 the gang has changed from being about family and protecting one another to simply about being only outlaws that’s when Arthur realizes all the harm they did was for nothing

I was so pissed at this part! Arthur and even Dutch express their dislike for Strauss' methods early on but no one can deny the fact that the entire camp benefitted from them. Strauss genuinely thought of the gang as his family and he was just doing his part. True that Arthur got sick after collecting one of his debts and he probably realized that at some point, in fact he even mentions it in conversation, so he probably blamed Strauss for his own illness, leading to this. What's even worse is that just before this you can overhear Strauss talking to Grimshaw and he says he would have absolutely nothing without the gang and he is genuinely upset that the gang is slowly falling apart. What's even worse still is that Arthur sends him off in to Roanoke Ridge of all places!

If you have the PC version there is a mod that fixes the cold weather outfit glitch and then the gang members stop commenting that Arthur must be cold. It deletes their dialog about it so that you never hear it again. I didn't even realize it was a glitch at first as I was doing my first playthrough and it became more annoying as I went on, so I installed the mod and started a new game to get all of the dialog that I had missed because of the glitch. I was only mostly through chapter 2 when I started over so it wasn't a big deal to start again. Anyway, I recommend that anyone who has it on PC should install the mod. For those on console... sorry, I hope Rockstar fixes it soon for you.

Like the character but he is a faulty man. The fact that people even try and justify half his actions in this game is ridiculous. Especially with criticism towards Dutch. “Dutch betrayed Arthur” I’m sorry but I don’t remember Dutch talking with Abigail about robbing their own gang blind like true thieves... Strauss honestly is one of the most underrated camp members. Same with Karen and Tilly. He get's so much unnecessary hate I'm my opinion. It wasn't even his fault for Arthur getting tuberculosis. Plus if it wasn't for Strauss every camp member who survived would probably still be on the run if he even said a word.
@MrZsasz25
@MrZsasz25 4 года назад
I wish that Arthur had ended his relationship with Strauss in a more positive way. Sure Strauss did some scummy things, however objectively speaking he was the one who inflicted the least amount of suffering on his victims -> the other members of the gang murdered plenty of folks, Strauss's victims were "just" exploited, but they lived and had an opportunity to go on with their life...Sean is loved by everyone (including me), but wow he cut some poor farm-hand's throat in one mission (when you burn down the Grey's tobacco crop), even though the guy was just some harmless schmuck trying to earn a living. That was way worse than anything Strauss ever did. Strauss M.O. was to seek out desperate people lend them money which helped them on the short term and then demand the money back + interest, so that they had to do desperate things in order to be able to pay him back, which left them in an even worse situation than they were in before they met him. A horrible thing to do, but in my book way less bad than shooing some guy who is just trying to earn a living by working as a guard on a train or a stagecoach. Strauss' victims at least lived (okay Thomas Dowd and Arthur Londonderry did not, but those men died due to medical conditions that Strauss did not give them - so they would almost certain have died just the same, even if they had never met Strauss; though in all fairness one can argue that, if it had not been for the debt they owed to Strauss, Dowd and Londonderry would probably have worked less hard [since they were not under the pressure to make a lot of money quickly to pay back their debt to Strauss], but would instead have rested more, so that their health would as a consequence perhaps have deteriorated less quickly and they would have lived longer, or perhaps they would even have recovered [though that is unlikely considering the nature of their ailments and the state of medicine at the time]...But, regardless, I believe my main point, that Strauss's deeds were less devastating on his victims than the other gang members', still is accurate). .... So Arthur is a bit of a hypocrite, when he excoriates Strauss for being ruthless. Except for the Reverend and Pearson I've seen all the men of the gang - even Uncle (who cut a farmer's throat, after I tied him up, in the cattle stealing mission!) - do worse things than Strauss. So as I said, I would have liked to see Arthur finding a more positive way to deal with Strauss, when the gang fell apart. Perhaps he could even have used him to save some of the other gang members from doom. E.g. he could have grabbed Strauss by the shoulders and demanded from him to do something noble and selfless for once in his life to make up for his past sins, and, to redeem himself, take some of he defenseless members of the gang out of the danger zone, that is the Beaver Hollow camp (where the Pinkertons will arrive sooner or later) and accompany them to a safe place and help them start a new life. So I wish Arthur, when he confronted him would not have just kicked him out, but would have said something to Strauss like: "You have hurt a lot of people, Leopold. So have I. We have been bad men. I want that to change. I want you to leave that life of villainy and hurting people behind and do something good for folks. I want you to make up for all the anguish you and I created by helping people. So I want you to help those of our friends that need help to get out of this hellhole here and get to a place where they are save from O'Discolls and Pinkertons and all that stuff. So you, Leopold will now take Karen, who is a mess and needs to get of here, and Mary-Beth and go to Emerald Station. There you will buy railway tickets for the three of you and travel to a place far away from here, where it is safe. And then you will help them so get the means to start a new life, by working as a bookkeeper or something. If anyone asks, you are their uncle." -> and Strauss, impressed by Arthur's words would have taken the girl's under his wings and left with them (and than have worked an hones job to pay for their education etc. until they would have been able to take care for themselves - after all, women without a family were in a bad situation during that time; and Karen would have needed a lot of care on top of that to help her overcome her alcoholism). That would have been a way for Arthur to get two of his friends (Mary-Beth and Karen) to safety + give Strauss (who despite everything was his friend and someone who care about Arthur) a pathway to redemption. After all Arthur himself tells Mary Linton, Rain Falls and other that his main goal before he leaves (or dies) is to get the defenseless members of the gang (Jack + the girls) to safety. He also writes that into his diary. And his farewell conversations with Trelawney, the Reverend and Charles, before they leave + some camp dialogue with John, Abigail and Uncle ("Don't wait to long to get out of here!", "Be prepared!", "Be ready") also unambiguously states than. And even the blind seer encourages him to save as many as he can, before he dies in one of his cryptic prophecies when you give him money. It would have been nice, if Mary-Beth in the epilogue had told John that Strauss took care of her and Kate for 3-4 years after the gang fell apart and through hones work acquired the means to pay for the publication of her first book, which turned into a success, which enabled her to stand on her own feet henceforth as a writer, whose books were accepted by publishing companies without her uncle paying for the publishing costs.

He did some bad things in his live. But he also did a lot of good, for which we, his friends will always remember and love him". Perhaps you could learn through conversations that Strauss settled in Valentine where he worked as a accountant for the cattle market and selflessly gave most of his income to orphans and other people in need turning into a true pillar of the community. Heck they could even have Mary-Beth mention to John during their meeting that Strauss took care of Kate after the disbandment of the gang like a father and even managed to get her of the hooch, enabling her to straighten out her life.

Redemption is in the games name. Author is trying to redeem himself and his wrongs by doing positive things for people that will impact after he dies. That's what the games about. And also it's a game dude I'd rather it not make sense and be fun then make real world sense and be boring.

I don't understand why Dutch didn't had a reaction to this. As a matter of fact, I don't understand why Arthur didn't come clean with the gang about his TB and say that he was dying, considering that he knew almost everyone in there for years.

Personally I never had a problem with Strauss and his money lending, the only thing would be I assume he charged exorbitant interest rates but also most of the debtors you go to collect from try to run away or straight up attack you to get out of paying so I feel 0 sympathy for them especially Downes.
