Using some easy to find plumbing fittings you can gang together any number of rain barrels to increase irrigation sources for gardens in out of the way areas.
Parts list for ganging 5 water barrels the same way I did.
5- 3/4 inch PVC Bulkhead Fitting
5- 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch Tee Fittings
8- 3/4 inch Male Adapters
1- 3/4 inch Male Plug
1- 3/4 inch shut off valve
1- 3/4 inch male pipe thread to male hose thread adapter
1- 10' length of 3/4 inch PVC pipe
1 can of PVC primer/cleaner
1 can of PVC cement
what ever kind of downspout diverter you desire. They make them in many different varieties.

that fishing the bulkhead fitting through the barrel is GENIUS Simple! I have always avoided the blue barrel because I couldn't figure out how to work the inside piece, you just saved me a fortune! Thanks!!!

Great setup you have there! I'm from Johannesburg( South Africa ) we have had water shortages for the past 2 year due to failing infrastructure i was looking for barrels on google and somehow I got to this video, genius way of getting that fitting through that hole , I will most definitely make use of the video Thank you Cool workbench and tool cart 😎

You should add a pvc union between each rain barrel. Then you will be able to separate the barrels for cleaning or in a cold climate to be able to store the barrels upside down for winter.

Using the T on the first barrel could come in really handy for cleaning it. You could unscrew an end cap, then you'd have a tube you could shove a brush in. Clean it like the barrel of a gun.

Thanks for showing the details and "tricks" on how you set this up. Many just show the final set up wo showing much details of how they constructed it.

hello, I installed a similar system, but instead of connecting by a plumbing system with the costs involved, I use a syphon system from one barrel to the next barrel. It does work, I found it out on RU-vid, not having any holes ensures no leaks and it is very easy to increase capacity with an extra barrel and you can very easily remove a barrel for cleaning. Try it with 2 pop bottle and some plastic pipe, move the bottles up and down and see what happens.
@Traitorman.14.3
@Traitorman.14.3 Год назад
That is the way we do it. A length of hose. Fill it with water and stick each end into a couple of barrels, where there is enough water to cover the inlet in each tube. The only engineering I have done is some 3D printed bits to hold the hose on the barrel to prevent it from folding in on itself.
@fern9234

I keep debating which method to use and it seems like over the top is better since there is zero chances of leaks except at the one spiggot.

Isn't it in the tape direction the same as what is screwed on? So the bulkhead fittings' section is supposed to be, as he did, opposite the norm, since it attaches backward from normal.

Very cool! My husband and I are from nw Colorado (East Slope). We both grew up in the mountains here and have finally found our little dream farm nestled up against the foothills. So excited to get all my garden areas going, heirloom seeds planted and everything set up like we've planned. We are extremely fortunate to own the native water units that are on the property... I still have always wanted to set up a rainwater collection system so I'm going to do that too. I really like what you've done with this particular system very much, so it's the one I've chosen to put together for us. Hey, thank you for sharing this and all your other videos.. 👍 I subscribed and will be making my way through all of them. It's all useful and so important, especially in these times of major food supply chain interruptions, which people should know about (please research it) the food shortages and water wars were planned decades ago and are being methodically orchestrated as I write this ... Worsening water wars are here now- folks/farmers straight up being denied water by the 👺 corrupt state and federal Water Boards turning their supply off. Making sure you have water that no one can just switch off as well as being able to grow enough of your own *non* GMO leaden food- to provide for your family in the years to come will save lives... 💠 Good luck to you and yours... Stay safe!

I would have used a core drill bit. In your case you should drill a pilot hold then use the spade bit. Very hot water and some dish soak would be a good way to get rid of the stickyness.

Good project 👍 Not to be critical but if it was me, I'd leave just a lil more room between the barrels. They could swell out enough when they are full to put undue stress on the PVC and possibly pull apart. Other than that good job! I plan on building one virtually identical as yours. Thanks.

If you can include a clear section of pipe so you can make sure that the water is flowing like it should. I have multiple IBC totes linked and I have some clear PVC sections and it is sure nice to be able to watch the water pour around in a big storm. Don't forget to paint your barrels black to prevent algae build-up.
@MichaelGrim
@MichaelGrim 2 года назад
How does painting them black prevent algae? Getting some white barrels delivered to build a system like this, so now you have me wondering if I need to paint them or something.
@thelostarchivesserialvault5353
@thelostarchivesserialvault5353 2 года назад
@@MichaelGrim Most IBC totes (always use FOOD GRADE totes to store water) are translucent. Water that sits around, especially rainwater, will develop algae in the presence of sunlight. Painting them black or wrapping them in black plastic prevents the presence of sunlight. If your barrels are translucent white then yes you would want to paint them. You can paint them whatever color you want if you want to blend them into your house for instance. Make sure to set the barrels on a raised platform so you can use gravity to flow the water out for use. A barrel typically holds about 55 gallons wheras a tote hold 350 or so. totes can be bought on craigstlist for less than $100 each. Make sure to have a ballcock valve installed inline so you can drain the barrels if needed. I have 10 tanks (2 rows of 5 each) interlinked so that as one fills it overflows into the next one. You would be surprised how fast the rain will fill them up. I water my yard with it.
