Gangplank’s event was the most ballsy thing Riot ever did but I still wish they would have killed Viego at the end of the SoL event. Still, the murder bridge, GP’s rework and Lewis the gator’s release made that event one of the best things Riot has ever done
I think the best thing they could have done is killed Pantheon when his rework came out and when they brought him back changed the characters name to Atreus. Kinda dumb that the whole theme of the character is a man taking the gods power but the for some reason keeping the gods name.
11:34 This is beautiful 😂 "Oh my goodness, I don't wanna be here" *flees* Once again, the great Gangplank flawlessly escapes death. Even funnier considering the Kindred
A lot of folks talk up Morde or Jhin or the Watchers as the best villains in League, but I gotta cast my vote for GP. He's got tenure, meaningful connections to both the world and its characters, he actually DOES THINGS, and he's a much more grounded and believable villain thanks to years of development and being literally "just a guy." Sure it's cool that Mordekaiser or the Void/Watchers are Runeterravengers-level threats, but GP is a *personal* threat: the others can take over/destroy the world, but this pirate can and will hold a grudge, and absolutely will make good on his threats. Also ye olde fune facte: his E stat boost originally killed a friendly minion, thereby being the only way to truly deny last hit gold!
"He actually does things" is what makes him work, I would say. There are villainous characters that I find a lot cooler or more interesting (Lissandra, Swain, Singed...), but they're completely static. I really miss the very few times when Riot moved the lore forward. Maybe Arcane and the inevitable other shows that will follow can fill that void.
@@Muuony I didn't play it yet, I can't really imagine her doing anything significant in that but hey, we'll see. At least we get to see her in something new !
"There is nothing more demoralizing, then looking at a Gangplank who has full build at 20minutes with 10000 more gold on top of his full build." - You know who.
Honestly, it was amazing, and it did all 4 of the main champs involved so much justice (Twisted Fate, Graves, Miss Fortune and Gangplank). I wish the Viego story had been even half as good as burning tides was.
Gangplank is one of those champions that their character is expressed in every aspect of the champion in such an amazing manner. From his design being something that isn't just 'sexy anime boy' but rather a reflection of bilgewater and how engrained the region is into his character, to even his build being more of a fighter or strongman than a bodybuilder. And the prosthetic being this low tech approximation does feel plausible with how you can see the pulleys and springs inside, to the wood and even amount of fingers. And I must say his character being one of a powerful man, hellbent on revenge to reclaim his rightful place feels better than most villains in LoL. He is simply a man, no special powers, magic, demons, or comic book type arc's. He instead is someone who since birth has grown in this rough and violent region, and has learned to conquer it. And the fact that he survived burning tides, and acts as the rouge captain he is today proves that his power was all from him alone. And he genuinely seems like a threat that will come back, and could easily rival all but the most powerful villains if they dared stand in his way on the path to reclaim the crown of bilgewater.
this description makes me think of brigand vvulf from darkest dungeon. a setting with skeletal hordes, demons possessing pig corpses, fungal zombies, and unspeakable eldritch horrors found deep underground. who is one of the strongest enemies in the game? a bandit leader with no supernatural abilities whatsoever. just a shield, a handful of bombs, and an army of thugs
see his mastery over this complicated champ really does show what you can do with him. Imagine if this power was available to anyone who played him, it'd be broken! I'm glad this champ is skill locked to pros like nickyboi
Burning tide was so cool, between the stories the aram skin and the gp rework, best lore event yet! On Illaoi's test, i always took it that its nagakaburous testing your will. It rips your soul from your body and puts you in a kind of "storm" to see if you have the will to persevere and if you do, you get its blessing because you have the strength of character to move and thats all it wants.
GP gets extra points for voice acting. Of course, Matt Mercer is great, that goes without saying, but the German voice of Gangplank was done by the same man who voiced German Mr. Krabs from Spongebob. LEGENDARY. (Also: Rest in peace, the actor died this year.)
I love that he actually really has connections to so many other Champions. He even has some outside of Bilgewater; he stole Swain’s main ship from his fleet and then sunk it, and he also stole things from Zed and his temples AND got away with it. He is all over the place and just being annoying to people 😂
in a world with primordial gods and void monsters the stinky pirate with guns a ship and a fucking orange can compete with them. oh and also the BARREL! cant forget the BARREL!
Gp's evolution is a trilogy but the 1st is the worst and... well... Pirates of the Rift: Orange Sea Pirates of the Rift 2: Cutlass & Fire Pirates of the Rift 3: At Gangplank's Barrel !!
AAAARGH I remember Necrit and you talking about the ''burning tides'' multiple times throuhougt the times I've followed you... I am a zoomer but I also played LoL in 2014 but I took a huge break, I feel like I really missed something... Must have been reallh cool !
GP is one of those champs I don't play but find really cool nevertheless. Man's the true definition of a scumbag pirate with balls. I don't know many other champs who say "Let's steal Swain's main ship". That's one of my favourite little character stories.
I know you have a soft spot for Monster champs, NickyBoi, But for me.. it's the bilgewater champs, they are some of the best champs who feel the most involved of all the cast. Twisted Fate + Graves are my favorites, but all of the bilgewater champs are amazing and feel so full of life.
Captain Gangplank "dying" was actually a lore improv because of the bugs. If I recall correctly, he was disabled mainly because ally Draven could stack Adoration on GP's barrels indefinitely and the lore following with "he ded" wasn't a part of the original plan, they just winged it.
