When extracting a long-rooted, periodontally sound anterior tooth, regular forceps or elevator extraction may not be successful without damage to the crestal bone. For an immediate placement of implant in the esthetic zone, the preservation of the crestal bone is critical.
The technique of splitting the root in two, without expansion of the socket, provides space for the pieces of the root to be moved medially by severing the periodontal ligaments.
The locksated partial root can then be removed without damage to the socket.
