In this video, I try a few different things to improve my garage portable air conditioner setup.
Original Video:
• Finally, My Garage is ...
If you're interested in this unit, it's a Hisense AP70020HR1GD (700 sq ft Dual Hose Portable A/C w/ Heat Pump).

You'll be glad you did and probably wonder, "Why didn't I do this a long time ago!!" Looking forward to seeing your garage door insulation video.

insulating the garage door would help majorly

Yep, short of a bigger portable unit or a permanent unit wall mounted, which I can't easily do in my garage, door insulation is pretty much the last option on the table. I've got all the gaps sealed up well, so I don't have too much outside air leaking in. It's just the heat radiating off a single door and double door. I've already looked into door insulation and placed an order. Follow up video coming soon. Thank you.

Split systems work amazing for a garage even in south Florida.

The fan uses a lot of power. Try moving it a bit away from the back wall and other places to see if you can get better circulation at a lower setting.

I really appreciated your video showing how you vented the A/C hoses and sealed up the openings on top of the door. It is the most well thought out, best looking solution I have found on RU-vid. My Midea portable 12,000 BTU inverter A/C and heat pump with unique hose in hose design will be delivered Wednesday. Will be using your bottom venting solution with some modifications because of the of the single "hose in hose" design. Why not spend the time and expense to insulating the garage doors? It is the most cost effect change and will make the most difference more so than anything you did in this video. There are many RU-vid videos showing how to insulate the garage doors either with the pre-made garage door insulation kits or using 4x8 sheets of foam board insulation and cutting it up yourself. My best friend across the street has a three-car garage with metal uninsulated doors and I also have a three-car garage but my metal doors are insulated. The doors on our houses face due west so both metal doors get exactly the same amount of sunlight exposure. The temperature's this week have been in the mid- 90's. When he came into my garage this week when I was cleaning/re-arranging my garage, he made the comment, "Your garage is cool compared to mine. The heat is unbearable in mine because the doors are uninsulated". Remember those metal doors also get extremely COLD in the winter and radiate the garage heat to the outside so insulation the doors will make your garage warmer in the winter too.

Thank you for the positive feedback. Based on your experience you described, it got me thinking about it. Previously, I had it in my head that it would be expensive and be unsightly insulation batts that would need to be held up with a bunch of tape. You are right - there are several foam board options that get good reviews. The price is reasonable as well. I placed an order and will do another video when I install them.

I used the NASATEK kit from Amazon to insulate my garage doors as my house faces west and gets hammered by the sun in the afternoon. I saw a 5 degree difference in ambient temps in the garage (measured with no recently driven cars) and a 30 degree reduction in surface heat from the garage door. I think it will be worth the cost and effort to install it.

What do you suggest i have this air conditioner the exact same one it isn’t showing the temperature on the front black circle over the Hisense logo on the front I’m not sure why it doesn’t show on the front

You could save a bit of money, by not air conditioning, but Dehumidifying the space. I'd look into that if you were uncomfortable. The cooling effect is easier to attain, when the air conditioner is not struggling to dehumidify first. Maybe though perhaps just find a new place to hang out. Try it. Just add a Dehumidifier to the space.

In the little bit that I've tried the unit's different settings, I think this may be true. It has a "Dry" mode that prioritizes dehumidifying. It's definitely doing something because the machine kind of does a small clunk when it switches into that mode. And it still blows pretty cold air. I may make this my standard routine - run it for an hour or two in Dry mode then switch to Cool to maintain.

What happens if you leave it running overnight!? Does the temp drop even more overnight and maintain throughout the day.
@focusedwherever
@focusedwherever Год назад
I'll give that a shot. It was 81 and lower humidity in the garage overnight without the AC running. That better starting point, even compared to the 84 when I started the morning trial, might allow it to reach and maintain a lower temperature before the day gets hot.

The outdoor intake & exhaust are too close IMHO. You do not want any hot exhaust sneaking into the intake. Not sure which outdoor pipe you should extend or how; generally, you may get better airflow with unbent, non-corrugated pipe.

What if the intake hose just reused the already cool air in the garage instead of hot humid air from outside. Would that help the unit not work so hard? But maybe also keep the humidity down!

This is a good question. I investigated that in the next video for this project. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sh8awmUVW4A.html

So you spent $500 on a portable AC, $125 on insulation, hours planning and playing and those things are only about 45% the efficiency of a window AC…. You could have done a DIY mini split
@focusedwherever
@focusedwherever Год назад
I have no doubt this is far from the most efficient choice. The unit is not even rated for the garage space square footage plus the high ceiling. Unfortunately, I have a very strict HOA. I need something that's reversible and easily put away. I painted the outlet area and park a car in front of it to make it less visible. With a mini split, the outside unit would have to be too far away to be concealed.
@57z
@57z Год назад
I was wondering why you didn't do a mini split. I guessed HOA. Because you seem too smart to have gone through all this trouble, when a mini split would blow this out of the water in both cost savings and amount of Cooling.... It's definitely worth getting insulation on the garage doors
