If you're Craftsman, Chamberlain, etc garage door opener is closing and then opening up - its likely a common problem related to the stop limit mechanism. Here I explain how it works, what can go wrong, and how to test and fix it.
Want to support my channel? Here are a few Amazon links that help me do that - it doesn't cost you any extra to use them and I would certainly appreciate it!
Ryobi garage door opener I mentioned: amzn.to/2JvmJ5W
Reasonably priced Chamberlain belt drive opener: amzn.to/2sxa09e

Thanks! It is a fairly long and detail oriented video, so if someone is looking for a quick fix I could see how they would get antsy. There are a lot of reasons a garage door opener won't stay up or down though so I tried to cover them all to assist in troubleshooting.

Thanks for the video. I had a similar problem with my door opener. I went through the usual troubleshooting guide and made adjustments, but the door wouldn't stay down. I also noticed the sliding piece on the rail hit both the top and bottom stops. I took off the cover and right away noticed a broken wire. An easy fix! I tried it and it worked, then some minor adjustments and all was working as it should. Thanks for the video. You saved me spending $200 on a new garage door opener. Thanks again.

Thank you for making this video - don't worry about comments from people who don't have any patience and will never fix anything on their own. I have a Chamberlain opener that my son uses primarily. It started not wanting to stay shut in the winter in MN no less. He told me that when he opened it, it went up a little and then stopped. Then he closed it and it opened back up on its own. Then he left and shut the door (he thought) and it opened itself again after he took off. In the meanwhile my garage heater was going full blast for two hours til he came back home from skating and told me that it wasn't staying shut... Anyway, I was able to fix mine by adjusting back the down-travel by about 3/4 of a turn. I diagnosed mine by disconnecting the trolley and running the unit. It did not return after moving down the track so I figured an adjustment would probably do it for now. I have a feeling the door was maybe frozen to the floor and it jumped a tooth either in the housing or on the screw drive when it had a hard time opening. Either that or I may need to get out the soldering iron and do some surgery like you did. Thank you for providing the in-depth info on this and showing the internals of your opener. I thought the length of your video was perfect and I enjoyed the humor as well. :)

Ok. I opened up the craftsman opener and found the gray wire to the limiter switch was completely broken in two pieces. I added another three inches of wire between the two ends via western union splices, soldered, shrink tubed both splices, reconnected, plugged it in and it’s working great now. Thanks for the video. Thanks for the video, I didn't even think to check any of the wiring. When I wiggled the main harness, one of the wires was indeed broken. I did a quick twist of the ends followed by some shrink tubing. Sprayed deoxit on the contacts, straightened them out and now the adjusting screws work like they are supposed to. I'm hoping a new wiring harness is available online somewhere.

Thanks! There was a lot of info in the video. Helped me identify the problem: loose wiring connecting the door sensors to the main motor thing. If you see garage door sensor lights flicker during the door closing, it might be a loose connection, assuming no other obstructions. At least take a look at the thing before giving in and calling a pro. Good luck.

I'm having the similar issue, with the same craftsman model, but mine turned out to be an upper bearing issue, not allowing the spinal to spin, in order to allow the travel limit mechanism to operate. At first I thought it was a spriped gear, but looking closer, the bearing on top, is totally messed up.

I have a Craftsman and my garage door opens and closes on its own every two minutes or so also have had trouble opening with remote, (have to be in the driveway , where i used to be able to open it 150ft. away, that is with all the remotes and have to sometimes click a few times before it would open) might it be the electronic card itself? is it better to get a new opener since Sears is going out of business? Thanks Charlie
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 6 лет назад
Hey Javier - that's a strange problem. If you take the batteries out of your remote, does the garage door still open on its own after sitting for two minutes? I'm wondering if the problem could just be your remote. By removing the batteries you can eliminate that as a possibility. I wouldn't worry too much about Sears' longevity as a company - parts should be available for years to come because they're made by others anyway.
@44zapata
@44zapata 6 лет назад
I tried it and it still going on. Iv'e had problems with all 3 of my remotes struggling to open the door (they all started acting up at the same time a few months back and it kept getting worse), so I'm thinking that it may be short in the electronic board. I think I'm just going to replace the opener and call it a day. Great tutorial by the way, and thanks for your response and help.

Thanks Ivica. That sounds like a very strange problem, and worrisome problem. Does it every try to close by itself after sitting for a while? If the errant behavior happens in both the open and closed position, it could mean additional possibilities causing the problem.

It has been years since mine acted up and the specifics are a little fuzzy, but I kind of think that my problem started during cold weather and slowly got worse. It's worth checking your wiring for the limit switch to make sure there isn't a break. If not, I would try adjusting the force sensor sensitivity and see if that resolves it.

There is a device inside of the case that has the plastic screws going into it. It allows you to adjust the travel. There should be 3 wires connected to it. For me, it was the gray wire that was bad - it acts as a ground for the other two when contact is made at the top and bottom of the travel.

Hey James! I'd start off by adjusting the up and down travel limit screws, and possible the force adjustment screws. Although, if it was working properly before and NOW its causing problems with both up and down I suspect it is related to the ground wire on the switch that I described in the video. That wire would affect both directions. Good luck and feel free to post if you have any questions along the way.

@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 5 лет назад
@@jasper9804 Interesting. I read through the instructions and it seems like you use the arrows to move the door to the top and bottom respectively and then save those position settings. If you've done that, and it isn't saving (ie: the door keeps trying to go down and eventually reverses itself) it means either the setting wasn't saved properly (control board issues I guess) or the travel/position sensor and/or its wiring is faulty. Have you opened up the case to see what it looks like? Its possible there is something similar to mine with a lead screw physically moving something along a sensor or array of sensors and the wiring went bad just like in my case.

@@pikayell I thought the same thing. Spend $80-90 on a board vs. $150 on a new unit. Check and see if any of the places that sell the board offer a 365 return policy (even on opened parts). Some do (such as Repair Clinic). That way you may be out the return shipping if it doesn't work, but that is all. Please let me know what you discover!

I just added 1/16th turn to the garage door DOWN on the side... that worked. But I'm seeing that it wouldn't stay down because the center main gear is starting to cant because of bearing wear at the top. That "cant" changed the stop and hold for the door down mode. Unit is wearing out. ^..^~~

@@charlieaf92 Yes. When the unit itself experiences wear with age, these settings need be adjusted. My door unit has two of them, one for telling the door to reach maximum down and up. ^..^~~

@@charlieaf92 Didn't like the rail design. Wear gloves, I skinned 3 fingers snapping it together. The wall button is pretty janky. Very basic design. I mean, it's a wall button, but you would think that Ryobi would have stolen a design that's a little better. LED light isn't directional at all. Points straight down. Indoor keypad doesn't make sence. I mean if your in the garage press the wall button. Just a selling point to folks that have no idea. Sensor brackets are tacky looking. Programming the unit was pretty easy. But not a fan of the programming sequence. Really it's a Genie when boiled down. I have a video where I use Ryobi parts on a Genie. Worked! I guess it's hard to compete with Chamberlain LiftMaster on design.

Hey Erik - good point. The problem I ended up having was the central wire for the up/down limit switch had an internal break. I detailed how to verify that with a volt meter later in the video. Let me know if you have any questions about your problem and I may be able to help.

Thomas Gebhardt have you tried adjusting the limit screws? Try turning the down limit screw until the door stops about 1” above the ground. If it continues to re-open after that, then it’s probably the same wire that went bad on mine. I believe you can order a replacement.

They aren't much help if yours is failing for another reason. The idea here was to explain the various inputs to better troubleshoot the symptom vs. zeroing in on a particular cause.

Hey Carlos - you're not alone in that assessment. With this video rather than just saying "hey if your garage door is broken, this is the problem", I tried to give an overview of how the entire system works, so that if someone is having a different problem than I did, they're able to start narrowing it down and troubleshooting it themselves.
