My Barndo started out as a shop only with only one room besides the shop. A mud bath in the garage. Since I told the bank it is a shop 3800ft^2 . Also had a mech room/stairway next to it. Could not have work on better. Liv had the designer print shop only plans for my financing. Later I added 3 more baths and living to 3624 but now I have a mud room bath with full shower toilet and utility sink and wash dryer in the garage. I lived in a RV but wish I had moved into the garage. It took me 6 months to get the loan.builder 5 months to shell and 15 months to finish

Watched the whole video. Well scrolled through. And I don’t think you guys answered the question. Is self building worth it?

I know for traditional framing, switching to attic trusses doesn't really take much re-engineering but I wonder how much of an impact that decision has when switching from stick-frame 24"oc to post-frame 96"oc trusses. Like I can't imagine you can just frame out the floor with 8ft i-joists, tilt up some walls and call it a day. They'd have to be at least two-ply, which would throw off how you're connecting the trusses to the columns, right?

We build with attic trusses on post frame and typically we switch to 4’ on center trusses but it depends on size of room we are trying to achieve. This is a unique situation that was an after thought. We plan on finishing this space this coming winter and will show what we have to do.

@@MrPostFrame Hmm, yeah, I could see that working out if you're engineering for that at the start, especially when doing clear span trusses. For just the section that holds the room you're building, switch to 4'oc trusses to double your load rating and probably rest the intermediate trusses on a beefy header between the posts. You're probably right. Doing that for the length of the building, if you wanted a room that big, though would probably not be an ideal solution since it kind of cuts into some of the major benefits of postframe construction. A room that big, it would probably make a lot of sense to run that center support beam like you ended up doing on your build, and just math your way through the questions of how many posts, where, and how thick does the beam need to be when drawing up the design. All good stuff I'm going to have to keep in the back of my head. Thank you
