I was asked a lot about the projected virtual Matrix I have on my garage for the 2020 display. Here is a rundown of what I did hardware-wise to make it happen. Check out the circled i at the top right for a link to a video showing what it looks like when running.

Hello fellow Arizonan! I followed this link from xLights Sequence Sharers, and I have to say wow, Great setup! My first year sequencing and I was looking to do a garage matrix next year, but I’m really digging the simplicity of this. Thanks for sharing this, I might bug you with some questions when I start diving down the rabbit hole.

Nick, can you share the serial settings you used in FPP in the projector plugin to turn the projector on/off?

Well done! What a great idea! Nice to be able to not use pixels on garage doors. The Epson 475wi Brightlink is normally rated up to a 100" diagonal screen at 12" away from the wall. According to the screen size calculation tool I would have to mount the projector about 24" away from the wall to cover a 9x7 garage door using a 4:3 ratio. According to the manual this unit is designed to mount 6" to 12" away from the wall. You appear to have your projectors mounted further away. Do you find that you can still focus this machine if you pull it 24" away from the wall? We have temps in Utah that drop down to 5 degrees in December. Do you think this will still work at that temp? Thank you.

Thank you. Yeah it works well at further distances. I changed mounts this last year and it was well over what they say. No focus problems at all. Even though I’m in az I live at 7,000 feet so we get cold too. Does get below zero and they work great through the cold.

You can view it on RU-vid if you search: "Bang! - AJR - 2021 Christmas Light Show" My channel is "Christmas Illuminations". If you have a chance to look at my house you will see the two garage doors that I am thinking on mounting the projectors on. What do you think about projectors on those overhead doors? Would there be an advantage of buying the Epson 485 that has 3100 lumen over the 2600 lumen offered by the Epson 475? Thanks again for your help!

Nice work with the sequence and display. That’s a big tree! I always enjoy seeing my sequences on other layouts. For the projectors, more lumens is always better. Biggest caveat is to make sure you get the same model for both. Past that it doesn’t matter a ton. Mine are plenty bright enough but that is also because I use Coro on the garage doors. It helps brighten things up a lot.

I just bought one of these projectors. How does your mounts work for waterproofing

I had plywood above and was sealed with latex paint. This year I changed to some short throw projector mounts and just threw some vinyl on top of the projectors. It was cheap and dirty but worked through snow and rain.
