Garage Metal Shop Tour. Getting Started in Metalworking. Furniture, Sculpture, Chassis Building.

My metal working shop tour and tools. I'm just getting started in metalworking and using one wall of our two car garage as the shop space. My metal shop is a work in progress so the layout and tool collection is incomplete but I'm able to make basic cuts, bends and welds which is great for the type of metal work I plan on doing. Furniture legs, go kart build and sculpture work.

I have 5 and I only ever use one these days. The cordless one! Would like a second one of those though for sure. I kind of found that now that I a cordless bandaw, belt grinder, and good chop saw I just don't go to the grinder first. So sick of abrasive dust anyway.

Getting started is easier than most think. In my opinion you just have to get the right tools. I remember when I started my shop it was completely bare bones and I didnt even have enough money to buy materials for a table, but I took my only 500 bucks I had and bought the basics and started my rail business building rail on the floor, lol. That was 2016. Piece by piece, job by job, I bought all my stuff 1 tool at a time . 5 years later, took that 500 dollar investment and turned it into 250k a year building rail. Great trade to have...

I'm starting a channel for you...as a former Marine Infantry Platoon Sergeant, I'm starting "Hobby Shop Boot Camp", yup, and my first class is going to begin by asking if you made anything that worked in a seriously amplified manner, lol. Actually, for a home shop, you have some pretty decent tools. It's looking like my shop where I metal fabricate and woodwork. Currently, I am fabricating an all aluminum camper, but designed like none other. Top secret! I have a lot of the Flex-Volt tools and they are great. I have the same Plasma cutter, but went with the Miller 220 AC/DC and learned how to TIG and spool-gun aluminum for the camper build. You won't regret learning those either. I'm working in a two-car garage also and have learned to store and in some cases, work overhead. The large frames which make-up the camper were welded on stands six feet in the air then assembled in the driveway. I'm riveting the 16ga aluminum skin on it now. It has radiant heating, and pivot-outs (not slide-outs), and looks like a stealth fighter bat-camper. You need one. Look me up. You need a sheet metal break, 16 ga, probably at least 36" wide (mine is 50" so I can use it on 4x8' sheets)...to round off your metal fab collection. Buy a pair of Milwaukee sheers you won't regret it. Oh, and it's true, you love carbide blade on your cut-off saw. I'm a sarcastically humor-oriented bastard that loves to work with my hands. Give me 24 hours and you will not be clueless any longer! Carry-on!

For a “dude that is clueless “ you really brought the excitement to this video. So much fun to hear the excitement in your voice, and the fact that you brought the video in at exactly 10 minutes was crazy. Now all I need to do is get a “get dirty” hat, buy some metal, figure out how to feed the damn wire into my welder, move the car out of the garage, did I mention the hat? Anyway, you’ve got fired up and inspired to get out aaaand weld something! Thanks, David!!

About welding hoods You really get what you pay for. I started in HS shop class with a $50 auto darkening from HF that served me well right up until I tried to earn a paycheck with it which was when it died. I stepped up to a $100 Forney from Ace that isn't much better but I still keep as my backup. The HF to Forney transition was black and white to color TV I'm in love with my Miller Digital Elite hood. It's a pro helmet. Modes for grinding, cutting, welding, and X mode which is for when you're in a tight space and the sensors aren't always going to be able to pick up welding light, they're tripped by different rays. Idk what rays but it's not your standard UVA/UVB. Going from the Forney to the Miller was like going from a regular tube television to HD. Bigger field of view, clearer picture, and I feel like it achieves the required lens darkness without limiting vision. Using a shade 11 is using a shade 11 but, I feel like I can see scribe lines or soap stone much better along with material edges and gaps. It makes welding for 10+hours much easier and less fatiguing on the eyes. Plus, if you're in a large shop, you don't need to carry a hood, grinding mask, cutting goggles, and all that other shit. Only gotta carry one piece of safety gear. Hell, I leave my torch goggles and grinding shield at home. Don't need em. Lastly, the Miller has a touch more room under it for my Miller respirator. A definite must have for all day every day welding grinding cutting e.t.c Anyway, definitely recommend everybody to stay away from hoods found at HF, HD, Lowe's e.t.c Obvs, not everybody can drop $350 on a nice Miller but, your local welding supply will still have something in your budget that's better than the aforementioned junk You have a cool shop though

David, I am not sure if you still read these old video comments but I saw that you wanted to do a video on Jim Hayens back right before Covid. I still think that video is a good idea. I like metal art work and seeing his art work would be very inspiring. I hope you still can do that interview. I also think that you might do a small series of local arts in your area. You can interview one every month or something like that. Great video as always.

Southern PA bud in the same vote also just bought my first welder setup. Practice some stick the learning curve is sharper but since I've only did a little mig years ago and wrong. After a few hours of stick if I was to try a mig that's gonna be like using a hot glue gun. Tig looks nicer with wood working by miles.

This was cool to watch. My Dad might inherit my Grandpas house and I would love to build a work shop with a studio on top of the garage. I would do all the electrical with the help of my uncle and I'm a welder too so id do anything metal related, my bestfriend would do my plumbing, I have a few friends who are framers and one of my friends is an engineer so Idk if id need his help to lay out the prints of the structure etc. But watching your vid inspired me to have an idea of what stuff to buy. Just wondering how much all that would cost 🤔 Its just an idea and dream of mine since houses here in Cali are ridiculously expensive, nothing concrete yet....
