Garage Sale Fiat Parked in 1992, Will it Drive?

This project showed up from a garage sale. It is a 1977 Fiat x19 that had several receipts in it suggesting it had broke a timing belt and bent valves. We got it to run but either it was hurt to begin with (would make sense since it had all this work done and was parked) or it might have somehow had two seized valves when we cranked it. This car is miserable to work on and very hard to get parks for.

Dude, I just restored an x1/9 that has been sitting since 1995 and I did it off youtube and forums. Invest the time and you'll find its a fun driver!!

It wont be by us, it is hard to get parts for these things. $300 for all new hoses and a fuel pump and all of it was new old stock because apparently no one really makes parts for these. Only way I see this car having a future is if it ends up with honda in it and if someone else buys it

a combination of burnt out valves, wrong cam timing, wrong ignition timing, and 2 mechanics who don't know much. When you see an untidy workshop, and the use of adjustable spanners instead of the correct ones, and the casual throwing spanners on the engine, these clues tell you the kind of expertise (or lack of) there is. Poor little X19, it was not a bad car, I had 2 of them when new, good fun and reliable if properly looked after.

Lol. Don't get so heart-broken about it. Also love how you can diagnose all that through a video, only thing missing from your comment was "I am a 40 plus year mechanic". Of the things you said, the only slightly possible one might be a cam timing issue, but I doubt it because the noise came and went and it also only had an issue on 1 cylinder. All we were doing was having fun with it because we knew it was guaranteed to have problems since someone "fixed" it in 1992 but then never drove it. Again, no need to be upset about it, whatever went wrong with it happened in 92 and we just rediscovered the issue

Damn man, It's in great shape. Whoever told you $3700 for a new head was trying to take advantage of you. It probably just needs a new valve. For $100 you can do a valve job and be set. I just bought a 74 in much worse condition than that. They are fun to drive.
@PracticallyStock
@PracticallyStock 3 года назад
I think that price was assuming the block and piston were trashed as well as the head. Probably just a valve but the owner only bought it because it was cheap so it's currently in the process of being sold again
@markbury1788

Before cranking it over , should pour small amount of oil thru sparkplug holes to lube cylinder walls and rings, and check for age cracking of timing belt, if it jumps time it will bend valves.

No one should be surprised. This X1/9 has been sitting for nearly Three Decades.. Could sitting longer for longer than those making this video were born... They expect this to start up and go? Very possible No start up is due to the cam timing belt has jumped a tooth or more due to neglect. Total and utter non-sense, Zero entertainment value. Built by Bertone an Famous Italian coach builder, Penned by the Gandini the same guy who penned the Lamb Miura, Countach and many others. This was the Bertone creation that could have bettered the Lancia Stratos. It's chassis is designed by the same guy who designed the chassis for the Lancia Stratos,

Yet despite how seemingly great this car is it couldn't handle sitting in a garage for a few years.

Says much about the producers of this YT channel abusing this X1/9 with the intent to grow it's followers by exploitation of this X1/9. What is apparent in this video is the lack of proper technical skills, technical expertise, understanding and tools to properly address the problems of this X1/9. Bully and pick on another ride...
@PracticallyStock

I'll extend an olive branch, for our own entertainment cars that don't work or are troublesome get crapped on, the fiat isn't alone in that. In part this car was very frustrating because we advised the now owner to not buy it because something had to be wrong with the car for it to have just sat after having so much work done to it but we were ignored and ended up being right. We could figure out what is wrong and fix it but for our area it would be cost prohibitive to do so. It is a neat little car but I don't like cars that I can't readily get parts for, my 280zx is another example of this and it has caught more hell from me then the fiat. I certainly wouldn't say we abused it being that we have been trying to find a home for it as opposed to it rotting in a field like the rest of the owners cars
@rupunzel6299
@rupunzel6299 3 года назад
Olive Branch, here is some history on the X1/9 for you folks to work on.. Then we can talk. Watch this interview with Marcello Gandini who penned the X1/9 while he was at Bertone: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BeZjYr15WYU.html Then read this article from Hemmings in 2011: www.hemmings.com/stories/article/x-squared-1979-fiat-x1-9 Then we discuss... if you're interested. The X1/9 is NOT a Datsun-Nissian 280zx which has not a lot of significance and forgettable in numerous ways. IMO, trying to do another program like "Wheeler Dealer" is not wise as there are already SO many moto fan programs like this all jockeying for the same limited fan base. Consider doing something other than their over worn antd tired "car flipping reality show" script.

As stated in the video, I do not own it and the guy who bought it wanted to see if it would run. In my mind, whatever is wrong can't be that bad given that the engine still wanted to run. (ie not a broke timing belt and likely no piston to valve action). If I had to guess, I would guess a valve is stuck in the guide on the now dead cylinder. Which might explain the "popping noise" from the beginning potentially from the valve popping closed after the cam lobe pulled away from it. If that is the case, then it must have stuck open during the drive. The owner isn't motivated to work on it but that's what I'm thinking happened.
