Your tips are so useful! One thing I always TRY to do that does save money is maintaining the items I have bought - cleaning, storing, using protective paint ( like Rustolem clear coat ) , lite sanding & repainting, anything that will prolong the items for life for outside. I hate having to rebuy stuff! New Gardeners should remember that gardening is a process- it is something that revolves over the years- Enjoy the journey!
I am an avid gardener and have been watching gardening videos for years. I stumbled upon your channel months ago and I am hooked!. You are, by far, my favorite. I look forward to your videos, and want to thank you for sharing your talents and ideas with the gardening community.
I wish RU-vid gardening creators like you understood what an amazing impact you make for some of us. You inspire me and allow me to take a mental break with the things you share. Thank you! 💚🌿
Love to see your channel growing in subscribers. You’ve taught me things & I love that you are an everyday garden (not constantly selling us stuff we “need”)
Great video. Ine thing that has saved me money (and taken me a while to learn!) Is to buy with intention instead of just piking something up here and there. I loved the Ammi Dara you had in a recent video and I definitely want to grow some in my garden next year!
Love the idea of buying small plants - it has taken me a long time to come around to this idea but it really is worth it in the long run. They grow so fast anyway! Thanks for these tips!
Great tips!! I second the tips on buying clearance plants and buying small plants too. I have found that smaller plants require smaller holes to be dug (so much easier!)
Every one of these tips is extremely relevant, especially for someone on a limited budget or starting from scratch. Five years ago we purchased a small home that had been renovated but the yard was sparse grass, weeds and buckthorn hedges. Pretty awful. Fast forward to today and I have a yard where neighbors driving by stop and tell me how much they enjoy seeing my garden. Facebook Marketplace has been my best resource for free or heavily discounted items. The one other tip I would add is to get free arborist wood chips if a large area needs to be covered. And most municipalities have piles of free wood chips available for residents, with usually no limit on how much you can take.
There are so many beautiful items to use in our creations in out landscapes and gardens ! I don’t mind spending my money on gardening and landscaping. This hobby allows me to do all the things I love. I get beautiful flowers for bouquets plentiful veggies And fruits . My health and fitness is a bonus! Grow on Rox! Your awesome.! 🪴💐🌸🌱
Don't forget dividing plants. I've divided hydrangea, heucheras, grasses, groundcovers, annuals, on and on. Unless it was a super expensive shrub, I will always experiment and try to get my money's worth. Just check the root system. Unless it's super tiny and fragile, just cut and separate it into as many pieces as you like.
Thank you Roxanna! All of your tips are useful and informative. This is my third year gardening and I am enjoying every minute in the garden. Thank you!
I loved this video. The comment section has such great ideas too. I too repurpose whatever I can find. My biggest fail was trying to turn a wooden bed frame into a herb bed. It was a queen size, hard to position and I did not treat it. It really warped. But I just moved the plants, repurposed what I could from frame and kept going. I also go to goodwill and other thrift stores to find things to use as pots, pot holders, storage for my garden items, etc. I am now able to melt holds or drill holes for drainage. Dollar Tree has so many things I can use as clotches. A $1.25 laundry basket will a rock on top will protect my plant from birds. I have drawers from an old dresser I am going to use for flowers this year. My old grill will be filled with strawberries and flowers in the spring. I have been making compost bins from pallets. So much fun. Also I’d like some seeds of whatever you want to pass on. Thanks
Awesome! So many thing you can repurpose to use in the garden, I recently saw someone take an old filling cabinet, took the drawers out and spray painted to make a huge planter, it came out really good.
100% agree on smaller plants. They are so low maintenance compared to those with big root balls, they can squeeze between tree roots, and they establish faster.
Thank you so very much for sharing!!! Great tips! I'm definitely gonna use some of these ideas for sure. I'm always on a budget so anywhere I can save some dollars I'm here for it!!! Much love from Western new York State ❤
I have gotten some really good deals on plants at Lowes. Make friends with the associates, they love repeat customers. Also, I would love to see you Roxanne make a video if some of your shopping trips
Great tips. I have done a ton of seed swaps, warning!!! it's addictive ahhahah. Also "seedy Saturday' is an event held in the first part of the year in most of Us/Canada. You can search for your local town and see when they have it. It usually has seeds to swap, or is really inexpensive like $.25. Also will have vendors with seeds and other garden-related booths. And ours has a kids section where you can plant something and take it home. We used to go every year, I hope it's back this year, it's been canceled the last 2.
Great tips! I tried reusing some of my potting soil last year. I did about 1/2 old Espoma potting mix with 1/2 of the Espoma Land & Sea compost. I added the Proven Winners granular slow release fertilizer. It worked quite well-I had tons of flowers and I only used the liquid fertilizer twice. I am going to try this again this year.
Excellent video Roxanna 🥰 I know how you feel all my money goes on my garden from garden centres, local sales, Facebook marketplace and e-Bay 🥰 I absolutely love it 🥰
Hello friend. I don't have a yard or even my own place right now, but I'm speaking it into existence! I've been following you for quite awhile and at that time I had my own, so I thought. I'm really looking forward to putting the knowledge that you've been sharing to some very good use. Many blessings. OneLove ❣
I love to shop in market place in face book I found some cute planter pot love them . And some other about garden stuff. I just can’t stop go in market place to look for stuff. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Buying small plants works so well for me. It’s hard sometimes because I am impatient but in the long run it works out. We have lots of plans for this garden for both plants and hardscape. There’s no way to do it except for with smaller plants. Takes longer but I’m okay with that.
Thank you for the tips, some of these things I already do but I can’t wait for spring to try making my own obelisks, & someone gave me a lot of heavy duty tomato cages & I’m thinking about making trellises in pots instead of buying them. Happy gardening this spring.
Thanks for sharing your experience and being so transparent. I am wanting to start my own channel and this was sooo helpful! I just discovered your channel and think it’s amazing. The way you have the time stamps set up and the information shared is great! I’m sure you will reach your goal year by year. It’s refreshing to see that it’s ok to do something you love, share it and take your time!
Great tips! I used thrift or free baskets, lined them with any fabric I have, and it’s great planter for annuals. Yes, they don’t last for long, but for 2-3 years I have almost free planters. And they look great, rustic and unique. I also start saving old potting mix, I’m going to use it for bottom of my raised garden or bottoms of big pots. Just add some fertilizers and mulch leaves. Swapping seeds it’s a great idea. I have seeds from my cannas, happy to send them to you guys. I saved a lot of rhizomes and going to used them instead of seeds, that why I’m happy to send my cannas seeds to you. 😊
Such great tips! I’ve been gardening for 12 years. I discovered YT garden channels in 2018. In the beginning, I did it with my kids then my kids grew up. I still didn’t know what I was doing until I started hanging out at my neighbor’s garden. My garden didn’t start thriving until Jess from Roots and Refuge showed me I didn’t have to be afraid of failing. I was sick and tired of failing and spending so much time and effort, not to mention wasting money and seeds. Now that my vegetable garden produces well and I’ve started growing flowers and everything else😆, many of my friends ask for advice and help getting started. They are surprised when I answer “I don’t know” to some of their questions. On one hand, I stuck to it because I was learning and searching out answers for myself, but the results were amazing when I started being curious about how other gardeners did things. In the space of five years, my garden went from four 4x8 beds to a 6400 square foot space. There’s plenty of room left to add more beds to that space. AND I can actually help others start a successful garden!
That is awesome friend, you never stop learning and yes, not being afraid of failing is key, is not always a failure but learning experiences year after year.
Screaming deal on those heucheras. Our big box stores have that sale rack up all year with plants. It is a great place to find deals. I am always using crazy things in the garden., love thrift store treasures. I found two beautiful trellis for $11. My DIY obelisks, potting bench and arbors are my most visited posts on my garden blog so I know people love seeing how to save money by doing it themselves.
@@SoilandMargaritas Yes, we are getting unprecedented rain and snow which will make for a great year in the garden and I have plants to foil those pesky gophers! Heres to a grand year for us both. 💯
Always enjoyed your videos Roxanna l, you are such an inspiration. Thanks for all the suggestions and great ideas today. I signed up for your newsletter, how exciting! Merry Christmas sweet lady!
I forgot to mention my fave cost saving measure-propagation. It’s saved me tons, especially on shrubs like hydrangeas and even boxwoods. I propagate my own plants, and other gardeners are usually happy to share a cutting. BE SURE TO ASK FIRST! Some plants are crazy easy to root. I didn’t know boxwoods would be so easy but I’ve got like 15 in my ‘prop box’ (just a clear plastic storage box with some holes in the lid). I plan to start a hedge next spring. They’ll be small but that’s okay, they were FREE!!!
Great video! Thank you for sharing those tips. In Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 we have Seedy Saturdays where you can get free seed swaping, as well as some plants and Dahlia tubers for sale
You are the second person that mentioned Seedy Saturdays, I don't know if we have them here in the US, I saw something for California but that's about it. I'll have to do more research. Thank you!
I recently found your channel when searching for Central Indiana gardens and was pleased to find that we likely live less than 15 minutes apart! I noticed your boxwood shrubbery and have a couple questions. Do you know the variety and do they bronze in our winters? Take care!
So jealous of folks who find nice things on FBMP. I find nothing, every time I look. I think a lot of it is based on where you are. All I find is other people’s junk 😅 But that’s great info about the library! I think I heard a podcast about that collaboration program. We love our libraries 💚 And YES to reusing potting mix. With some added fertilizer it works well for a few years even. Once it breaks down and compacts too much, then it needs to go.
@@SoilandMargaritas Yeah I don’t get great sales either. The stores around here don’t seem to have as large of an inventory so there’s less to clear out. I found one good one this year though, happy about that!
