as someone’s who never had or used a garbage disposal in my life….watching this was horrifying my brain knows it won’t clog but my eyes are still horrified

You shouldn’t put egg shells in your disposal because when they’re shredded and combined with water, they tend to stick to the pipes and cause a clog later on
I’ve never seen or heard of these things before !! Amazing invention!! But the q is how does the food not get clogged up ? What’s the mechanism what’s in these disposals ? Are they like blenders? Is there a blade inside ?
They are centrifugal grinders to be exact, they spin the food into the sharp gratings built into the sides of the housing. And then the emulsified paste and tiny chunks of food are rinsed down the drain. The centrifugal force is what causes the food to be broken apart... no moving blades needed :)
I somehow doubt putting so much food in is good for the pipes or water treatment plants. Lol. I think these shredders are only in US houses. Here in Europe I have never seen them.
Where does that eventually wind up…. Rivers, oceans. Compost or landfill is still the best method for this waste. Sewage plants do not remove household chemicals or solvents from waste water, only some of the solids that go down your toilet. “Fat-bergs” are just another example of how most people are clueless about how to properly use municipal sewage systems. I work at a hospital and we aren’t allowed to flush wasted medications down the drain because of the ecological damage linked to such practices!
@@estonbachone Landfill certainly not because it is converted into methane which is a greenhouse gas. Composting needs extra infrastructure and will not work well on objects like bones. The waste from the disposer is converted into methane in a controlled manner in the water treatment plant where it is efficiently captured and turned into energy. Of course you are still not meant to dump liquid fat into the drain
throwing it out creates waste garbage disposals shred food into your drain it gets cleaned by local water treatment centers and the food and poop mix is used as fertilizer for crops we eat :) its actually better
@@aaryaagarwal8990 thats how you get a smelly ass house and ants and other bugs. theres a thing called garbage disposal google its there fora reason its under your sink and blends your food into a smoothie where it runs down your drains no issue. as long as your unit is powerful enough for what you shove in your fine
@@volcrazy89 you’re not suppose to just dump whatever foods you want down the garbage disposal. It doesn’t just magically vanish after... it can clog up the drain, and the line it can create a lot of problems if you just dispose of everything. It can even break the disposal. Most foods have grease, and grease over time balls up and creates clogs in your plumbing line which will lead to costly repairs
@@BlackHornetTactical What you can dispose with a GD depends on the model you have... Sticking to manufacturer's indication about dos and donts, you don't have to worry about GD breaking. To avoid clogging plumbs you just need a periodical maintenance. They won't get clogged when in optimal conditions. About grease, supposedly sometimes you clean the sink. Don't you use a degreaser for it? I do, those environmetal friendly of course... by definition this has degresing power. If you don't use a desgreaser, anyway you wash dishes in the sink and you use dish soap (even ecological) for it... it degreases too. Here's a first indirect approach as solution to your argues. Secondly, just like any appliance in a house and as said above, a GD and anything that comes attached to it needs maintenance... even home plumbings, with or without GD, are required periodical maintence over the years for a long lasting life without issues. ..... most children are taught not to go near the disposal, the same as not touching hot stoves or sharp knives. and also the switch to turn on the disposal is usually somewhere near the sink but far enough that children can't reach it or even easily see it. sometimes they're so well hidden that you kinda have to hunt for the switch to be honest.
I have not put THAT much garbage down a garbage disposer at one time but in fifty years I have probably gotten rid of several TONS of garbage just like he did. Maybe a clog once every five years or so and a worn out garbage disposal after ten years. . .
This dude puting greasy foods down that whirlpool disposall. Your not supposed to put greasy foods in the garbage disposal because it can clog it up. So never put greasy foods down the garbage disposal. But make sure you have soap that can get grease out of the disposal sink. But you never know if it will clog up. Because I wouldn't do it. But I have a disposal that can chew stuff up. So make sure not to put greasy foods down your disposal if you have one.
@@Dirty_Bear22 just google search why eggs shells are bad for a garbage disposal. Now doing an egg shell or two occasionally probably won’t do anything, but the problem is what happens in the long run if you keep putting eggs shells in it. It causes a sandy residue to build up over time and it can clog the pipes. And it’s especially not good to do it if you have a septic because that stuff won’t break down.
My roommate puts actual trash in the sink. Like plastic wrappers, metal cans. things that need to be recycled or thrown out. Also, instead of rinsing food waste down the garbage disposal, he leaves it either on the dish or lets it sit and dry in the sink. Like I think he would use it to hold trash until he felt like it was time to clean up at a later time? I have no idea, it never made sense. And as soon as I saw it I call him out on it and make him throw it out. He later would do it again claiming he forgot... okayyyy, sure you did... -_- I get the laziness of not rinsing your dish (sort of), but has anyone heard of putting nonfood waste in the sink? Is this a normal thing somewhere that I haven't seen?
Keep your plumber on speed dial. Whoever invented this, hit the jackpot, because even city inspectors are requiring it in home now. When it's clearly a bad idea to get all that food through your sewage 🤨
@@DIYPinto 1. Move food that's likely to spoil soon to the front of the shelf or a designated "eat now" area each week. 2. Have an "eat the leftovers" night once or twice a week; you can experiment with different recipes, find a new favorite dish and prevent food waste in the process.
But who does this! Put that $ # I T in the trash can. I’d rather use a pack of trash bags that cost under $10 than buy another garbage disposal for $100. Not to mention the smells. Now you have to purchase disposal deodorizers too
It would be a good idea to collect the shredded waste to mix with dirt and put the final product to the worms to create castings in the garden's worm's box.

What model/HP is your disposal? We just installed the Insinkerator Evolution Excel (so 1 HP), and the only thing I'm afraid to put down it is rice/pasta. Virtually everything else seems fine, but I'm worried about the clogged pipes lol.
I know this person put pasta down but I don’t suggest it anything starchy can form a clog including rice and it’s not a good idea to put stringy type foods in the disposal either they can wrap around inside the disposal and jam it
@@bramwellprice8833 all these disposal do and don’ts mostly originate from cheap units. High end disposals like the evolution excel can grind nearly anything. I have no issues grinding old pasta, entire heads of celery, artichokes, potato peels, bones, etc… nearly all home disposals are built like junk and have a very coarse output, and do a poor job of stringy waste. Very few units have under-cuter systems and will liquify all waste into a very fine slurry, fibers included.
I have an InSinkErator Prestige (just like the excel). I put everything down it except grease and eggs. I mainly use it for waste like pizza crust (as I don’t like the crust. I know, roast me if u want) and it is incredibly quiet

As a maintenance manager of apartment buildings, we get tired of replacing disposals because people misuse them. They hate it when we charge them $300 after the 2nd unit is destroyed after a few short weeks, and everyone after that. Whole oranges, onions, hams are not good for the life disposals. Ignorance and laziness are the problem.

This gives so much stress in the garbage disposal unit under the sink. Other manufacturers will not recommend disposing pastas, peeled off skin from fruits/vegetables, eggshell or other fibrous stems excess since this can stuck up the operation of the grinder and can overload the motor.
@@sheririch1734 Only old garburators had these issues. Modern garburators are more than powerful enough to handle wimpy vegetables and the thin skins like those on onions. A modern garburator can basically handle anything you throw at it including bones, egg shells, and fruit pits. The only consideration one needs to make is after it exits the gaburator and ends up in your pipes. Certain things can clog the pipes faster than others, but even then you have to put those problematic items in the garburator quite often to have any real chance of problems. Oil and grease are much worse than any solid items.
