Incredible front for a band, saw garage at the barrowland ballroom in Glasgow in the late nineties, Shirley had us all eating out her hand, so charming but with a real spiky attitude
I first heard this song as a 17-year-old wandering through Best Buy in the late 90s. I stopped because of the haunting rythym of the piano and ethereal chorus. As the song came to a close, I hunted down a store employee to try and find out what the song was, and they told me. Now, in that day, as poor as I was, you either bought the album, or good luck on EVER hearing that song again. So I bought the album and to this day, it was one of the best I ever had. And every now and then, I come back to this, which turned out to be the last song on the album, the icing on the cake. And it's still just as hauntingly beautiful as the first time.
I'm 71 and my daughter used to listen to Garbage in the 90s. Don't like everything they did ( I never like EVERYTHING a group does ) but this song is awesome. Garbage did a couple of others I really like
I imagine the name came from Shirley. She's british so in her tongue the band could be called rubbish. It's an american band so the ironic name was garbage. Good on them. You just know they were strongly advised against the name.
The sexiest song ever written in my opinion. There is such beautiful vulnerability and reassurance between partners. The sexuality this song emotes has the depth and a spiritual connection that embodies why two souls can best express their desire physically when everything else connects as well.
Woooow, just wooow, you answered my questions and then some about the true meaning of this beautiful music video. Thank you very much I really needed to read this today, God bless you ❤✌🦋
I love everything about Garbage. Tracks like this with the fantastic melody, dark lyrics, sort of goth / grunge. Brilliant, can't wait to get the anniversary album.
Never regretted buying GARBAGE V2.0 ... that album was an emotional roller coaster for me... my life theme songs were all in ONE masterpiece...every song ...that album made cry with it's beats, lyrics and vocals resonating deep what I'm going through at that time. The band was so intelligent in making each song very personal to their listeners...Thank YOU...
Lyric: Garbage - You Look So Fine You look so fine I want to break your heart And give you mine You're taking me over It's so insane You've got me tethered and chained I hear your name And I'm falling over I'm not like all the other girls I can't take it like the other girls I won't share it like the other girls That you used to know You look so fine Knocked down Cried out Been down just to find out I'm through bleeding for you I'm open wide I want to take you home We'll waste some time You're the only one for me You look so fine I'm like the desert tonight Leave her behind If you want to show me I'm not like all the other girls I won't take it like the other girls I won't fake it like the other girls That you used to know You're taking me over Over and over I'm falling over Over and over You're taking me over Drown in me one more time (over and over) Hide inside me tonight (I'm falling over) Do what you want to do (over and over) Just pretend happy end (you're taking me over) Let me know let it show (over and over) Ending with letting go (I'm falling over) Ending with letting go Ending with letting go Let's pretend Happy end
Watching this in 2020, met Shirley for their book, such a lovely and caring person. She remembered all of her fans in Edinburgh. Love you Garbage,, Shirley you are amazing
Am I the ONLY one who wants to read a Shirley Manson autobiography? I know she's a very private person, but songs like this that are so heart wrenching makes me wonder who she was thinking of and longing for...what man on earth would be so insane as to reject Shirley?
@TurboCMinusMinus You do realize that Garbage never released any music before she was "added"? Plus it is a known thing that she's the one who writes the songs.
When I was younger, I would go on night drives and listen to music that made me happy. This was one of those songs. It’s still perfect 22-23 years later!
Did the same thing. I would drive out of the city and hit a very dangerous rural road I used to know. I used to love listening to garbage on that drive.
Well said, Graeme. The Trick Is To Keep Breathing also helped me. Their entire catalogue has helped me...get fired up to work out with 'Push It' and 'Cherry Lips' and then this sort of song gets me crying for a failed romance...all of their music is pretty damn great. I have seen them in concert twice and love them so much!
ok, so i work at a concert venue and last month their gig appeared as a shift on my work schedule. now keep in mind that i had never heard of them before (i'm 24) and i had no idea what to expect, so that evening i just went to work unknowingly... man, they BLEW my mind and i've been listening to them ever since!!
How rad is that music of past generation is making it’s way into hearts and ears of younger listeners these days. Some true good music carries on and on and on. Enjoy and pass the good tunes on...
midsummersky I absolutely love this and your experience. This band has held through over the years and I remember first listening to them at 15-16 (39 now) and their music still is as amazing as ever. Check out their b-side tracks SO good and different than their album stuff.
I still kick myself whenever I think that I missed Garbage and Ween because I had to work...not the same night but those are two bands I've always wanted to see live
This is yet another one of those songs that brings me back to past loves. Nicole if you ever see this I remember us, it didn’t work out but it was an awesome time in my life.
they are not underrated at all! they had Nirvana's producer on drums FFS. their first 2 albums were massive and they were both epic albums, at least compared to the later work.
so not underrated, they were alternative Rock, had and still have their audience... You herar about them when they have something to sing.... not rememberd by scandals... only music
Looks like everyone disagreeing with you doesn't realize how unpopular they are for all their great tracks and albums released. Of their released albums not including B sides they have no bad songs to speak of. I can listen to all of their album releases back to back without skipping. That in and kf itself is rare for a band or musical group. When you look at their music sales they aren't big sellers. They did their first 2 albums and gave a big middle finger to the record industry when they asked for v 3.0 and gave them Beautiful Garbage instead. They are the epitome of a band who could have been sell outs but chose to make the best music possible even if it meant passing up huge money. They have my respect as performers above so many others because they chose to go their own route. Compare their songs to their contemporaries and there are other artists of the genre who have more higher ranking hits, though fee of then have the emotional depth and range that Garbage is able to achieve. I really do love Garbage and agree they are absolutely under rated.
Hey everyone. I love all of you here. I have fallen in love with Garbage since "I'm only happy when it rains" and every release has been better and better. It was a perfect mix of melancholy and emotional content that just hit me in my teens in a way that music, even during that time, seldom did. Just amazing work, and I'm so glad to finally see people who feel the same.
Definitely one of the best Garbage songs ever. If you haven't pined for someone who didn't want to be faithful to only you while crying to this song, have you really lived?
A stunningly beautiful song sung by a stunningly beautiful woman. The words and tune are both hypnotic and moving while Shirley's presence is simply breathtaking.
Absolutely great track from the soundtrack of life. Amazing how this applies to specific relationships we go through. Just saw Shirley and the boys open for Tears for Fears the other night. What a show! They did You look so fine as the final encore. Killer.
Oh my God, a double bill of Tears for Fears with Shirley and the boys?! That must've been EPIC! I've been listening to some Tears For Fears lately, including stuff I hadn't heard. They are great, but so is the genius band Garbage! So jealous that you caught that show, but glad that you were able to see it. You Look So Fine was the final encore? That is about as gorgeous/icing on the cake as one can get to close a show. Killer indeed.
GARBAGE - THE ALTERNATIVE ROCK BAND Garbage is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. The band's lineup-consisting of Scottish singer Shirley Manson (vocals) and American musicians Duke Erikson (guitar, bass, keyboards), Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards), and Butch Vig (drums, production)-has remained unchanged since its inception. All four members are involved in the songwriting and production process. Garbage has sold over 17 million albums worldwide. The band's eponymous debut album was critically acclaimed upon its release, selling over four million copies and achieving double platinum certification in the United Kingdom, United States and in Australia. It was accompanied by a string of increasingly successful singles from 1995 to 1996, including "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains". Follow-up Version 2.0, released in 1998 after a year in production, was equally successful, topping the UK Albums Chart and receiving two Grammy Award nominations. Garbage followed this by performing and co-producing the theme song to the nineteenth James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999). Garbage's third album Beautiful Garbage was also critically acclaimed, but failed to match the commercial success of its predecessors. Garbage quietly disbanded amidst the troubled production of their fourth album Bleed Like Me, but regrouped to complete the album, which was released in 2005 and peaked at a career-high number four in the U.S. The band cut short their of Bleed Like Me concert tour and announced an indefinite hiatus, emphasizing that they had not broken up but rather wished to pursue separate interests. The hiatus was briefly interrupted in 2007, when the band recorded new tracks for their greatest hits album Absolute Garbage. The band reunited in 2011, and self-released their 2012 album Not Your Kind of People on their own label Stunvolume to positive reviews. Their next album, Strange Little Birds, followed in 2016. Their seventh studio album, No Gods No Masters, was released in 2021. * And I have the great honor of having four Garbage albums in my discography. Therefore, I have two collections, Absolute Garbage from 2007, The Absolute Collection from 2012. Two studio albums, Version 2.0, remastered edition in 2018, commemorating the 20th anniversary of its original edition in 1998. And finally, Strange Little Birds , released in 2016. All albums are in CD format! * Version 2.0 is the second studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on May 11, 1998, by Mushroom Records worldwide, with the North American release on Almo Sounds the following day. With this album, the band aimed to improve and expand upon the style of their 1995 eponymous debut rather than reinventing their sound. Lead singer Shirley Manson wrote dark, introspective lyrics, which she felt complemented the songs' melodies. Version 2.0 was a commercial success, topping the charts in the United Kingdom, France, and New Zealand, and earning platinum certifications in several countries. The album has sold 1.7 million copies in the United States and four million copies worldwide. Garbage embarked on an 18-month-long world tour, and released a string of commercially successful singles backed with innovative music videos. Version 2.0 received generally positive reviews from critics, and was included on year-end lists of 1998's best albums by several publications. In 1999, it was nominated for Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. The album's third single "Special" was further nominated the following year for Best Rock Song and for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. ❤️💯‼️

One of the best bands of our time, I have seen them live four times. Only true fans know every song and Shirley....gosh! I can´t thank her enough for everything she is.
Does anyone else love the beautiful photography of this gorgeous video? It perfectly fits the song, which I think it is one of their best ballads ever.
First time I heard this song when I was 12 yo - I love my MTV ❤ , it was 98 or 99 I think. And it stuck in my brain for many years. I never was a fan of Garbage actually, but I like these songs. A lot of years has passed, couple of weeks before my Spotify playlist suddenly started this song and I just sat up silently. This was my turning point, I knew that I need to play this song by myself. I went to a music store, get an acoustic Fender and this was my first song I have ever played on this guitar. So, 24 years later this song has inspired me to buy a guitar. Funny, but my wife looks like Shirley. I never thought about it, but now watching this video I know it for sure, I have my own Shirley by my side ❤😅

Such a beautiful song. I just saw Garbage with Tears For Fears and they played this song, much to my delight. Shirley sounds better than ever and blew my mind. One of my favorite bands from the 90’s 😍

This still punches me in the guts after all these years. It's that powerful hooky bridge, that self-realization that something is indeed, over... "Knocked down Cried out Been down just to find out I'm through ...bleeding for you"
God, I love this song!!! I drive my wife nuts because I play it so often. We were fortunate a few years ago when Garbage was in town directly on our 40th wedding anniversary date so I sprang for VIP tickets and wow, what an experience. Love, love, love this band!...and we agree - you are NOT like all the other girls!!
