Yes I gave up with gardeners world. Too much trying to sell you things or doing things not related to gardening (look at all the lovely children learning about vegetables! Are you a gardening show, or are you my local newspaper? Look at this thing I made out of willow! Great, still not gardening). I've not tried beach grove. We'll see, mum keeps pestering me to watch it

Great video! Would like to add that if you cut the autumn fruiting raspberries about 5 nodes down of the lowest fruit setting, you'll get a double harvest next year, as they'll then bear fruit both in June as well as September/October. Tried that for the first time last year and it worked amazingly well!

Another excellent video Ben!!! And YES!!! Winter makes amazing things happen to our fruits and veggies… My absolute favorite time of the year to garden is winter. Last winter, I had some lettuces that were insane right after I let a frost kiss them (I took their row covers off on a night I knew was going to frost). I lost several plants, but the ones that survived were seriously righteous… Sweet, bright, incredible flavor, and that lasted for almost three week before they returned to normal. I have a tropical greenhouse that I grow things that normally don’t grow in the winter… (tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, peas, onions, radishes, corn, etc.) So I had some of the best fresh green lettuce salads I have ever eaten… In the middle of winter…. I wish I could eat salads like that year round, but the only time I can is in the winter. Which is exactly the time of year that most don’t think it’s possible… You can only get the incredible sweet bright clean flavors like that in the winter, it doesn’t happen at any other time. The frost or snow triggers it… I grew up on an organic farm in Washington State, right next to the Canadian Border. We grew about 80 acres of apples… Occasionally, we got some frosts that would happen right at the end of harvest on some of the later harvesting apples. Some of those trees would react to the frosts and create what are called sugar cores… The insides of some of the apples would turn clear like glass, right around the apple core. And it was magic… Super sticky sweet, clean bright flavor, the best apple you couldn’t even imagine. Not every apple would become a sugar core, but a lot would. On those rare days, I ate nothing but those sugar core apples all day long. Picking apples on a freezing cold morning is miserable… But if there were sugar cores as a result, then I wouldn’t miss that for anything… They were soooooo good. I don’t garden to get dirty hands… I garden for the fruits and veggies… And in the late summer and all through the fall, I am scheming and setting up my winter garden… Row covers, low tunnels (that can be removed at just the right time), Accompanying veggies and herbs in the tropical greenhouse. Brassicas that will get buried in snow, lettuces and greens that will be kissed by frosts, etc… Some will die, many won’t transform, but if I get lucky, I get a few successes. I love fresh fruits and veggies, but in the winter, I am obsessed with frost kissed, snow sweetened, cold brightened veggies of all kinds. It’s hard to make it happen, but when it happens, it’s so worth it.

My own list of things to do in November for my newly built house & the back yard which will become my veggy garden is: 1: get an estimate for gravel in the back yard (done). 2: find a pro inspector to help me with close of escrow walk-thru (done). 3: monitor progress on completion of the cellar insulation & wall-board aka sheet-rock (in progress). 4: set up a woodshop in the cellar (to do). 5: buy lumber (to do). 6: measure & cut lumber (to do). 7: assemble 5 gal bucket growing racks (to do). 8: obtain buckets & drill holes in the bottoms (to do). 9: mix garden soil & peat & fertilizer (to do). 10: sprout indoors the potatoes & onions & carrots & tomatoes & corn (2024 springtime). 11: move the growing veggies outside into the wooden racks (summer 2024). 12: water. 13: harvest. 14: store in cellar. 15: replenish soil with fertilizer. 16: EAT !!!

Not a tip for autumn but seeing your hard wood cuttings made me think of my discovery of the year. Side shoots from tomato plants root extremely easily allowing many plants from one. I came across this by accident after leaving a Sun Gold side shoot in a part filled watering can by mistake! Having discovered the roots growing I potted the new plant on and it soon caught up with it’s parent. I did the same with Magic Mountain, Gardener’s Delight and Gourmandia, all rooted and all gave plenty of fruit despite a late start. I paid over £1 per seed for some of this year’s selection so maximising production in this way made me feel better about prices paid. Perhaps this method of reproduction is well known but I have never come across mention of it despite some decades of tomato growing 😀
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
This is a great way to bulk out tomatoes and something I’m keen to try myself this coming season.
@Sxyz_
@Sxyz_ 6 месяцев назад
This is very easy, I had 100% success, tried it a few times this year. A good way to get multiple plants from one seed. You can even put the shoots directly into the ground. But in water it works better.
@prunechat8401
@prunechat8401 4 месяца назад
Certainly going to do this from earlier in the season after discovering the technique by accident last year. Some tomato seeds are more than £1 each now, rooting side shoots means that we can get multiple F1 plants from one seed or plug plant. Happy days!

I liked the tip about using bottles on sticks so you don’t poke your eye out. I used sticks this year and noticed the hazard they can be. The other thing I don’t like to see is rebar sticking up for PVC piping. I don’t think people realize if the pipes aren’t there and you fall it could be disastrous. I prefer to either clamp onto a board or just sink into the ground. I wish I could sink my hands into soil, but with eczema it’s impossible. Never wore gloves much before, but now a necessity. Noticed a lot of talk about overwintering peppers with mixed results. Don’t have the space for it in a cool area and actually looking forward to a break as I’m not much for houseplants. Edit: the one area I’m totally confused on is pruning fruit plants/trees. We have cold winters and believe all our pruning is done late winter. And berries are even more confusing because some bloom on first year canes some on second year canes and of course there is the confusing names of primo and flora-canes respectively. Apparently there are two ways to prune everbearing or again (fall bearing)🙄-some mow them off, some cut out the canes that just fruited. And I guess the idea is that everbearing can fruit some in summer with main crop in Fall. Then there is summer bearing which fruit on second year canes. It’s a debacle.
@Patbythesea

I have stopped overwintering chili and peppers. It isn't worth the aphid outbreak that I always got from doing that.
@dustyflats3832
@dustyflats3832 7 месяцев назад
@@Patbythesea OMG! Yes! Last year was the first year ever of having aphids on seedlings! It was Awful and fungus gnats! Couldn’t control either one with anything. I couldn’t wait to shove them out the door. I then tried horticultural oil when they were outside and that worked. I’m resorting to starting seedlings later when it warms up out in the greenhouse so it’s easier to heat. We get late freak frosts and it doesn’t pay to start early except onions, which I may just order from here on out after using up the seeds. The mess and room required indoors is too much. I’ve heard the production on overwintered peppers is mixed. I will try a low tunnel next year for peppers to get a few more weeks and see if that helps. Everyone says peppers like it hot, not here as Fall is when they are shining.

@@dustyflats3832As a houseplant grower, fungas gnats aren't harmful but they are very annoying. Not really a way of avoiding them in the houseplant world. I find though indoor plants generally are much harder to care for them outdoor ones.

November 1st, was our first frost/freeze here in Sylacauga Alabama (zone 7B), with 13 hours of freezing temperatures and a low of -3.3C. It was cold enough for long enough to kill off my pepper plants, basil, and zinnias. The rest of my garden is doing great. My pepper bed is covered with a layer of chopped leaves. I am harvesting assorted lettuces, Pak Choi, Late Nagasaki Cabbage, and turnips. The Navone Gold Rutabaga roots are starting to swell, and a few garlic cloves have sprouted. Soon, my tatsoi, and kohlrabi will be ready to harvest. Inside my polytunnel, a new generation of turnip seedlings are doing great. My potted comfrey are thriving, and my winter tomatoes, 3 Early Girl-bush and 4 Tiny Tim are healthy, but the Tiny Tim seedlings are growing slower that I like. The Seascape strawberries in my GreenStalk tower are still producing, and should continue producing berries until mid-December. Next on my list is moving nine grow bags, and strategically locating them in different areas of the garden. They will be exclusively used for planting pollinators, zinnias, marigolds, and cosmos. My herb garden is moving to a mound of soil near my front porch, except for mint, spearmint, and peppermint, which will remain in containers. I already have lemon thyme established in it, and will be adding comfrey, Greek Oregano, dill, and assorted basils. Other than watering, feeding, and harvesting, my fall/winter garden is on autopilot. In January, my garden starts anew with seed starts, plus 250 additional seed starts for a spring plant sale. A new batch of cool weather crops will go in the ground (raised beds) around the 20th of February, and potatoes during the 1st week of March. So, I can look forward to two months of relatively easy gardening.

Thank you for all the great tips! I've started on many, but it's a lovely sunny day and good time to finish out the list. I think it's also a good time to stock up on potting soil or other spring soil components now. Prices seem always to go up and you'll get a jump start in spring. I have a large area of blackberry canes, that I'd like to prune (if needed) and harness into some kind of order. They're each about 10 feet/3 meters long and unruly in my small garden. Do you have advice on how to prune them and suggestions for putting them in order? As always, thank you for sharing your garden wisdom!
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
Canes that have fruited are pruned, but if they are a tangle this may be hard to work out which is which. You may be best cutting everything right back then tying in new growth to one side and then the following year’s new shoot to another side. Alternating like this means you will easily be able to see and prune all fruited canes at once. More on all this here: www.growveg.com/guides/how-to-prune-blackberries-and-raspberries/

Hi Ben, I love watching your video's, you are inspirational!! I have two questions for you, how do I get rid of couch grass - clay soil? I have created raised beds like yours all new and fresh with cardboard base and plenty of home made compost but it still grows through and impossible to keep on top of, it grows through everything giving me a very poor result for my veg. And where did you get your metal arches from? I love them!! 🤩
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
Hi Victoria. The arches are from Agrs - www.Agrs.co.uk To get rid of the couch grass I would suggest covering the ground as much as you can - on the surface- with cardboard. Apply multiple layers to suppress and weaken the weeds over time. Just be very persistent with it. More here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tZ1nGKY5sLg.htmlsi=eC1koQkNW14mQmLO

Yes indeed - to give them more space. It's also meant to help them root quicker - being near the edge of the pot - though I'm not convinced by that argument.

I've brought 4 aubergine plants in, put them in the conservatory. First year I've bought plants rather than grow from seed - didn't get one single fruit. Are they worth saving now I've brought them inside? Peppers & chilli's inside as well - Yr 2. Love your videos, I'm only in Yr 3 so they've been such a help. Thank you 👍 x
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
I've always felt aubergines (and tomatoes) were best/easiest grown from seed sown in late winter/early summer, rather than overwintering. However, if you're already brought them inside could be worth trying.

I love your videos. So helpful. I’m wondering about spreading compost now. I’m in a north pacific climate, which is milder winter but with very much rain (similar to the UK?) and worry that if I apply compost ow, the good stuff will be washed away with all the rain. Any thoughts on that? THX
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
I would add it now. The nutrients don't get washed away by the rain - they are part of the compost. So adding it now gives more time for it to get incorporated with the soil over winter.

Thanks Ben, hope rosy is ok with the fireworks. I have some horse manure that’s not rotted yet, it does have bits of grass growth, do I need to wait if I’m not using the bed to plant until spring? Or can I put it on and the frost will kill things off and rot it down? I’ve got compost too so I could put compost over it if that will help. I’m doing no dig so it will go on cardboard thanks xx
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
I think if you're planting in spring, you could spread the horse manure over beds now. It should break down a bit over winter and all the soil life should help with this.

I would wait until spring to report the peppers, once you see the first signs of growth. And yes, overwintering them should give you an earlier crop.

@@GrowVeg Thanks very much for the advice. I have pruned them as you showed us and they are now on the windowsill of an unheated north facing room. They are snackbite peppers which did well this year in my greenhouse in Scotland and ripened in the autumn. The previous year I grew bell peppers but they didn't ripen in our short growing season. So I'm looking forward to an earlier crop next year.

I've used plastic fruit trays for seed sowing, especially those that contained grapes, which my daughter loves, that are slightly deeper than the example Ben showed. I do find that the top of the compost tends to turn green and sometimes seeds do not germinate. Would a covering of grit help, or could I be overwatering?
@GrowVeg

It sounds like you are overwatering. So perhaps ease off a bit and check moisture levels before watering. I often go be look and weight - if it’s very light it likely needs a good drink.

Great video … wondering if there is a problem bringing pests indoors with your overwintering plants? Would love to keep my pepper plants over winter
@timtation5837
@timtation5837 7 месяцев назад
Overwintering pepper plants is a must if you want a lot of peppers… It’s easy to do, and if you use some common sense, you shouldn’t have any problems with pests. An over wintered pepper plant can easily yield 3x the harvest of a seed grown first year plant.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
Just check plants carefully from time to time and act promptly. But pests can easily be kept on top of with a little diligence and care.

I check plants maybe once a week and only water if it’s dry. If the pots are very light this means they are likely very dry. Plant strawberries about 10-12in or 25-30cm apart.

Wait a minute, why can't I kill two birds with one stone by using my lawnmower bagging attachment? I could bag up all my fall leaves and grass clippings from our last mow of the season and then dump the whole lot into my cleaned-up garden bed in late autumn. We live way up north so we have tons of deciduous leaves (hence the investment in a bagging attachment) and can have no activity in the garden from December through March due to snow cover anyway. Together with the grass, wouldn't this make the entire garden a compost heap that would decay all winter and into spring? Then we use up all our used up yard bits once a year and avoid having an ugly and possibly stinky heap. I bet we'd have enough stuff for a pile a few feet deep anyway, would this work?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 6 месяцев назад
Yes, this could well work. I know a lot of people cover their beds with leaves for the winter. I guess the only question mark over it is whether everything would be rotted down in time for planting in spring. But you could always rake off any lumpy/undecomposed bits before planting.
