Market Garden Barrel Washer for Root Vegetables: Efficient, Easy, Affordable

Parts List: -loc line 78002 1/2" host assembly pliers loc line 32092 12" male npt valve (1) -loc line 51801 1/2" blue hose segments (need 3 segments, each segment contains 6 connected pieces) -loc line 51836 1/2" side flow nozzle (8) -loc line 32094 1/2" in-line valve (1) -3/4" pvc (not sure the exact lengths of the 4 pieces you'll end up cutting, but i bought one 10' piece and it was plenty) -purple PVC glue -3/4" pvc slip to 1/2" fpt elbow (see 2:16 in video) -garden hose to 3/4" pvc slip adapter (see 2:50 in video) -3 hose clamps (not sure exactly what size is needed, but I'd guess 1 1/2" or so) -you can use the screws and wingnuts that come with the mixer

Nice tool! The wingnuts are a good idea, and I like the all plastic construction of the mixer. Looks like it works well! The Loc-line lose convenient too.

thanks for explaining this so clearly and linking to parts! i'm thinking about going with a setup like this, but drilling holes that can be easily plugged up with wing nuts or something similar so i could also use it as a potting soil mixer. thanks again. (nice side note, the first farm job I had was as a farmer chef at heifer farm in rutland in 2013. also hi to liz and donna!)

Very awesome idea and setup! I have a concrete mixer sitting around the farm that we never use, so I just may repurpose it. Do you think it'd be gentle enough for new potatoes, or would it damage the skins too much?

Have you tried tumbling them in this unit with greens on? I love the build but I'm concerned about losing the greens for display purposes

We typically remove to greens before washing and packaging, since many of our root crops are saved and stored in a cooler, where greens don't typically last long. Occasionally, we'll harvest the greens and sell them separately. This system probably wouldn't be great for washing roots with greens still attached, since the greens are much more delicate. Great question!

thanks for this video. Have you tried washing Jerusalem Artichokes/ Sunchokes with the cement mixer? If so how did it work out?

Thanks for this video. I'm thinking about replicating this but my one concern is the water draining out the back getting on the motor box or the electrical cord - is this an issue? Any guidance on how to keep that from happening?

Hi Matt, if you replicate the design like we did in the video, it won't be a problem. We've used this unit for a couple of seasons now, and it keeps on trucking along without any problems!

Plastic housing; is it BPA free? How does this contamination affect your veggies?

We haven't seen any issues with the materials or the quality of our produce. Keep in mind that the vegetables are only placed in this washer for a few minutes before being dried and packaged for sale.

I really don't know how you would check for BPA's. Only have read that plastic contains BPA's or they are BPA free. Also do not how long contact is made before BPA's contaminate the product. I don't think you would see. Only by analysis can this be determined. I have a concrete mixer similar to yours (brand new). I would hesitate using this for a veggie washer due to the BPA's. Just my uneducated opinion. Thanks for answering.
