If you don't have a drill, you can also buy a full-sized plastic colander at the dollar store, and a similar sized large round bowl at the dollar store, and stack the colander inside the large bowl, and it's the same concept, but for someone who is "drill challenged."

I learned this the hard way when I tried to boil artichokes. Even after rincing them, tons of spiders, ants, and bugs ran out or floated around in the pot. Some of the spiders jumped out on my countertop. From then on I cleaned the artichokes outside and boiled them on my grill.

Good point about processing your vegetables outside, so you don't mess with the value of the P or S trap in your sink.

Great point about putting the water back with nutrients back into your veggies. If you don't have a drill I think you can use an All tool to poke holes in the bucket..

Hi, We are having a horrible problem with silk worms! The silky strands & woms dangling everywhere is horrible! I've tried to blast them off the trees with a powerwasher and nope - there they remained. So could you recommend another way to wash my produce cuz I dont want to be eating worms... LOL Thanks:)

I realize this video isn't about radishes, but since you used radishes as your veggie to clean, I have a question. A few of my radishes split. I assume this is because I let the grow a bit too long. I tasted a couple of the split ones, and they tasted okay, but are they safe to eat still?
@gamelard1963
@gamelard1963 7 лет назад
they usually are. lord knows how many ive eaten. every time i go to the store some have splits in them.

What do you think about water filters for the Hose? We have fairly high amounts of chlorine in our water..and who knows what else. Won't that chlorine alter the goodness in my soil?
@grubsgarden7364
@grubsgarden7364 7 лет назад
No. It's been shown that soil bacteria populations are not significantly affected by the chlorine or chloramine in tap water. Rain water is best for a variety of reasons, but the tap water won't hurt your soil.

Hi Luke. Do you have a lead free drinking water garden hose that you recommend? If so, could you provide a link to where we can buy it? Thank you.
@MIgardener
@MIgardener 7 лет назад
Most hoses nowadays are lead free. Just get a new one and literally any hose should be lead free due to the EPA cracking down on that.
@woodymoto2326
@woodymoto2326 7 лет назад
Hi Luke, thanks for responding. You may want to view this web site: leadsafeamerica.org/hoses/ They indicate that most hoses contain lead. The lead is not only in the metal connectors, but inside the hoses themselves (in the plastic or rubber lining). They have links and info regarding safe drinking water hoses (I thought you might have already been using one that you could recommend, that's why I asked the question). You might want to do some additional research on safe drinking water hoses since you have a new baby and since you are cleaning your food crops with your hose. I'm going to continue researching safe drinking water hoses myself to try to find a durable one that is safe for my vegetable garden and my family. I think many people put their faith in the EPA, but the EPA seems to be more concerned about their funding than cleaning up or protecting our environment. Just ask the farmers and gardeners that live in Colorado, down stream from the Gold King Mine disaster that the EPA caused. They sued the EPA for damages, but the EPA's attorneys said they wouldn't pay damages because they have sovereign immunity, which prohibits most lawsuits against the government.

Are the radish tops/greens edible? What do they taste like?
@grubsgarden7364

Yes they are, same thing with turnips. They have a mustard, slightly peppery flavour. Some varieties can get a tiny bit prickly though.

Me too!!! I can not grow any kind of a root veg. All leafs and no root. I have been doing research and I think I have too much Nitrogen, so I bought some bone meal and laid off other fertilizers. No luck yet but we shall see... my beets, onions, carrots all only grow string roots :( Happy growing!!! I am zone 6, Pa.
