Garden Lighting, Wireless switching & Terminating SWA cable into Wiska boxes.

Today I install a little garden lighting for a landscape gardener.
I used an existing garden radial circuit to supply a fused spur which in turn now supplies all of the garden lighting control gear.
The lighting control is wireless. I had originally planned to use a Wise Controls system. After watching an excellent product review on Quinetic by DSS Electrical I decided to give it a go. I like new toys as much as the next sparks.

When I was an apprentice I was told that SWA cleats should be fixed only with Black Japanned screws. And forty years later that is all I use.

Never, ever had a problem with WISE equipment, loads of options and great technical support, wouldn't use anything else. WISE switches look great too. Personally I always run 4-core SWA for lighting just for that other SL option. The WISKA earthing clamp looks like a neat time saver thanks for the tip !

Great channel, just subscribed. I always use dome head screws in metal back box's, as it doesn't leave a sharp edge. I did actually locate a fault a while back to a cable snagged on a sharp edge of a screw in the back box.

I rarely use countersink screws for anything. Have a look for flange head screws in A2 stainless steel to use outdoors. The heads don't need washers. With stainless, they still look new after five years.

I fixed up some faulty remote controlled lights on a summerhouse by sending the switched live to a photocell switch mounted just to the side of the gable end. The customer wanted the lights to be on at night and off during the day and would always forget about them with the remote so they were always left on all day and night. The photocell switch works really well and customer is very happy.

Lightwave any good? Megaman are great. Big lover of Megaman, had a job with a ton of naughty Philips LED's which wouldn't dim on a Lutron system. Megaman lamps saved the day.

Great video m8 I also seen the video on the wireless switches and am long time user of wise controls and was going to give the new stuff a try,after seeing your video in basically an ideal situation and not working properly I will stick to my wise gear.keep up the great work

Thanks mate 🤗 Sorted it 👍 Wacked them all on the same receiver and grabbed a 1 gang switch. It's only a small job and so it's not a big issue if they're not switched separately 💡

Great work fella, and another good video 👍 I’ll be nicking your idea for washers and dome head screws on cable cleats, definitely a better way to do it, i must admit that I normally screw straight in with counter sink screws but shall use your method from now on, especially as I like doing things neat and precise like you do ! I worked on some garden lighting this week and used Wiska boxes. We found that we could no longer remove the membrane with the plastic stuffing gland as usual and had to use a brass fitting with a lot more force. Have you come across this recently?

we should be using dome headed screws, especially in metal boxes reduces the chances of pressure faults, looks a right shambles in that meter box, in my part of the country there are labels saying we are not allowed to put our equipment in the meter box, for electric board only, suppose it differs from region to region.

With you on the screws and clips. I use nickel or brass steel cup washers with counter sunk screws.

I've never thought about cup washers or using nickle/brass 😍 glad it's not just me. I was originally forced to do this as an apprentice with MICC clips. It's stuck with me since.

This is a really great video. Thanks for sharing. Quick question though? At 11:04 I note there are two earth wires on the left (4 wires in total). Where did the second earth wire come from? Is it from that bracket inside the Wiska to the earth connection in the block?

Great video. I have a question, is it unrealistic of me to be uncomfortable with side entry on Wiska boxes, I always aim for bottom entry and figure there is less chance of moisture ingress or maybe I'm just being stupid. What do you think?

Agree about the wiska. Thing is I didn't have any 5 way lever wagos on board, only the ones for solid copper cores. As for the light I did consider it but there simply wasn't enough room. You know what those things are like. I struggle with that little 5a block. That video had been seriously edited for the light believe me 😅

Hi guys, would someone be able to advise me on how to run main cable of 16 to 25mm across two ocean bridges? The distance is about 70m and the cable takes a dip in the ocean for about 6m between bridges.

the reason you use a dome headed screw is because you have a dome head thats why you like them!!

The Quinetic Ultra Slim Floodlight comes with an integrated wireless Quinetic controller that can be paired with the Wireless Quinetic energy switch using any combination: a floodlight can be controlled by a maximum of 10 separate switches, a switch can pair with an unlimited number of floodlights.

The "service head" is not the meter that you pointed to. How are you not allowed to pull the fuse on the service head? How in that case do you change a fuseboard? Call out UK Power networks to carry out a safe isolation?

Just finished watching a DSS video when I saw yours bud. Annoying about the switch, according to the manufacturer, you can have unlimited lights per switch but 10 switches per light. Keep us updated, I was going to grab some, but going back and forth to mess around with faulty kit doesn’t inspire me to be honest.

They seem like a great bit of kit. F knows what's going on. I reprogrammed it 3 times and it still does it with both the switch and fob. It's great that the receivers have wifi capability. Maybe they work better 🤔

but there is no PIR on this floodlight. You can use non Quinetic one and its cheaper.

It's just preference and something I was taught to do. It doesn't mean it's the only way. I'd change tomorrow if I found a better way.

Black zinc coated flanged head self tapping screws is what your after, (basically a pan head with an incorporated washer in the head) and i agree will look good with black cable cleats for armoured to make it nice and neat 👍

Sorry but dome head screws and washers on an swa cleat looks a bit rough. Proper 5 gauge countersunk screw pulls in nice and will sit flush with the cleat.

I've never seen a countersunk cleat. Csk screws convert some of the downwards force sideways, same as an axe splitting wood apart. A pan head screw doesn't do that. Its downwards force works more like a hammer than an axe.
