In this episode: I install cabling, sockets and lights to a Shed.
~
The installation will consist of a number of LED fixtures and a few rarely used double socket outlets.
The switching will be wireless to reduce the amount of cable, damage, making-good and labour of the overall installation cost.
A 20amp 61009 should be sufficient to cover the maximum demand of this circuit. A switched fused spur housing a 3amp BS1362 fuse will be installed onto this circuit to protect the 1.0mm² lighting circuit.
Using Appendix 4 of the BS7671 I have calculated that to have a 20amp 61009 protective device on the 35m length of cable and not affect the 70°C PVC/PVC cabling within the shed, I will require the SWA cable to be at least 2.5mm². I'm hoping to have a volt drop of around 0.37Volts up to 8.82Volts.
I have in total:
5x 18W LED 2ft fixtures,
1x 20W LED floodlight,
1x 10W LED floodlight,
4x 5W LED IP65 recessed downlights.
As you can see a 1mm cable will be more than sufficient to supply the 0.61A of lighting. I have in the past been questioned as to why I choose to install some circuits in 1mm cable over the 1.5mm alternative.
There will be a total of 8x 13A outlets within the installation. I rarely see more than one being used at any given time. A lawnmower will likely be used occasionally. A typical lawnmower ranges from 900-1500 watts.
Even though the idea of premature collapse within a shed, especially of this size before the fire brigade arrives is very 'chocolate teapot' I have still gone ahead with affixing metallic cable supports. It's a good way for me to drum this new installation method into my future routine.

Very neat installation. People who don't work as sparks think it's a glamorous career change. Updating with regs changes and getting work in to keep the buisiness running is a tough job in ltself.

I think installing black pvc conduit would have been just as quick and only one tube would have been required if using singles. Nothing wrong with the flexi though, i use it in metal partition walls to give cables a bit of extra protection. Alot of sparks would probably just slung in t and e in that shed so have gone the extra mile.

Really great videos, presented with clarity. Good product advice too. Find it an inspiration and great way of learning, Thank you. I'm running SWA from my garage to a wiska box then a small section of hi tuff into a controller box to provide power for pond accessories, principally same as what you've done for the drive lights, but couldn't run SWA all the way as too large to terminate at controller, think my approach is ok?

Why aren't you using singles?,or is it belt and braces mech protection?,flexible looks good though,I've used PVC conduit in the past,no need for separate runs.I like the way you line the screws up on the boxes nice detail.
@MyTrustedElectrician
@MyTrustedElectrician 5 лет назад
People mistake me using flexy as tho i believe it's a wiring method. I don't. I just think it's slightly more mechanical protection to a typical Twin and Cpc, clip direct install. I use this method in lofts, cupboards, behing kitchen kickboards and lofts
@raychambers3646
@raychambers3646 5 лет назад
@@MyTrustedElectrician my mistake ,I've only used it for short runs ,its pretty tough stuff.I normally use adapterflex or kopex for motors etc.
@acelectricalsecurity
@acelectricalsecurity 5 лет назад
is it common where you are to use flexi conduit as you do, where i am we only really use it in short lengths, from switches to machines or appliances, anything greater as your shed installation, it would be regular solid conduit.
@MyTrustedElectrician
@MyTrustedElectrician 5 лет назад
It's not commonly used as for the purpose I use it for. I use flexi in sheds, lofts and cupboards. I feel it's an easy form of mechanical protection where most people would clip direct pvc/pvc twin & cpc cable.

Is that heat damage or UV damage? Most SWA is a PVC outer and XLPE on the cores, XLPE can't be exposed to UV as it breaks down and goes crunchy. That fitting had a clear cover and it was broken?
