New subscriber here. So glad I found your channel. We just moved to a new home and I am just starting to figure out what my problems are. I already know I have way too many liriope grass lining both sides of the walkway (talk about walking a jungle runway to the front door). I don't think previous owners ever divided it. Ugh. Started pulling it up and may relocate some of it sparingly to other places in the garden. Thank you for your tip about being purposeful! I do like the Japanese gold grass you have would love to experiment with it. There are also fried hosta on the SW corner of the house that must be moved. I am just learning about the sun pattern, and having only lived here since August, it may take a while to figure out where things should go. I tend to get impatient, but for now I am thinning the grass herd and rescuing the hosta. That will be a good start! Looking forward to being a regular viewer!

I have the green one (Hakonechloa macra) mass planted in another area and it is really special. I can never decide if I like that one or 'All Gold' more, but no one is making me choose so I'm not going to! The soil in this area is particularly rich because it's mostly reclaimed woodland. Hint. Knock as much of the soil off the root ball and fill a 5gal bucket ( or your contractor wheelbarrow) full of water. soak the root ball in the water for a few minutes. Grab the top and give the roots a gentle swish It will gently rinse all the soil off and relax the roots so you can tease out the weeds by the roots-especially lawn grass- without damaging the fine roots of your ornamental grass. I also use this technique with any dense clumps of perennial I am dividing like hostas so I can separate sections without ripping up fine roots.

Erin, I loved this video. And the dog humour sure had me smiling'. :). Also liked the pot and the floral water pond. I've spend every afternoon this week cleaning the front flower bed that has been overtaken with a plant that has spread its tentacles here there and everywhere. I have lost my Delphinium plant, 2 Allium and have had to dig up phlox and try to extricate this monster. Now I am planning what I will put in there next Spring. I have bulbs that I am now ready to put in the ground and the dam rain is moving in tonight and ongoing for a few days. This is my 3rd summer here and this monster plant was here when I came and just took over. There is still more on the other side of the garden but I am running out of time as the weather is getting colder. Next year for that side. Enjoy your weekend.. it's our Thanksgiving long weekend here in Ontario Canada. Think we'll cook a roast. :)

Hi there and thank you for stopping by! I asked Dorothy and she told me she knows no one in zone 7, as she believes that to be far to warm to suit her. :) I don't know anyone either, but sometimes local university extensions and master gardener groups keep a list of people who may help. You might try contacting them and see if you get anywhere. I hope you can find a little help so you can keep enjoying your garden.

Beautiful touches ❤️ I spent yesterday cutting back some of my plants till my back was telling me enough. Watching you I was wondering if you too have issues with your back after gardening. Love the Japanese grass I also have a fair amount. Your gardens are beautiful, wish I lived close so I could come for a garden tour. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

I wouldn't say I have back issues, but I certainly feel it more than I used to! I sort of hate kneeling though, especially if I have to use a spade.

Two dead ash trees fell over, crashed to the ground and taking out part of an apple tree and one perfect maple just two months ago. I am surrounded by dying ash trees and will have to get ahead.

Hi Erin... I just have to tell you that I thoroughly enjoy your YT channel! Last week while vacationing in Colorado I stopped at a Nursery in Fort Collins and purchased a (they only had one) 'All Gold' Hakonechloa Japanese Forrest Grass. The tag on mine says it's hardy in zones 6-9 so I sure hope it survives in my zone 5a. Do you give yours any protection in the winter? I also bought a 'Little Joe' Pye Weed (it's supposed to be a short one) and 3 different varieties of garlic -they had a huge selection to choose from. Now I've got to get my fanny in gear and plant the 30+ new hostas, 8 shrubs plus a whole boat load of bulbs and perennials. YIKES I've procrastinated long enough!

Don’t believe that tag. ‘All Gold’ will do great in zone 5 with no winter protection. There are some Hakonechloas that are less hardy but All Gold isn’t one of them. I’m so sure of it that is anything happens to yours let me k ow and I’ll send you a chunk of mine. 😀 ‘Little Joe’ is a great plant as well and one I wouldn’t want to be without. You’ve got great stuff there! Thanks for the nice comments!

@@TheImpatientGardener Thank you Erin for replying. I so happy to know that both should do well here. Now I just have to find the right spot for them. I know that 'Little Joe' needs full sun (no problem on where to plant him) and the 'All Gold' needs shade and that one will be planted with all the new hostas.

Do your hakone grasses turn brown and go dormant for winter? Or did the sun kill mine?

Dividing perennials other than Spring & Fall? Not sure where to ask this. As I garden in June, planting new stuff and really! wanting to divide/move existing plants. I get that it’s best to do it before and after active growth. And what happens to the plants if I do it now? 🙏🏻

Love the floating garden, but have never been a fan of grasses. I just don't see the point. But then I am just a beginner.

I think it's great that you recognize that you don't care for grasses. When I was first getting going I planted some things that I didn't particularly care for but I planted them because everyone said I should. Well guess what? I still don't really like them, so when I have the opportunity to do something else there I pull them out! That's the best thing about having a garden: You don't have to please anyone but yourself.

I'm perturbed with RU-vid. I've liked and subscribed and your videos never show up in my feed. While crap that I hit the not interested keeps popping up. If I want to watch one of your videos I actually have to go in and look for one.

Weeds are not a problem -- they are part of the ecosystem for a whole range of insects that are crucial for birds, frogs, etc to survive.

Trust me, as far as weeds go, I'm doing my part for the ecosystem.
