For the rudbeckia seeds! For seeds I have a hard time starting, normally I find they need some cold time. Wrap them in a wet paper towel and put in the fridge for a bit, you’ll start to see them open up. Process is called cold stratification. I’ve had good luck doing this with lavender seeds. Cheers!
@robyncrabtree7561
@robyncrabtree7561 8 месяцев назад
Agreed, perennial rudbeckia need a cold stratification period. Pop the seeds in the fridge for 60-90 days before planting in the spring.

This is what happens in nature seeds ripen at the end of summer and generally will stay on or around the plant exposed to winter (3 months) the in spring they will start to germinate. Commercially or hobby the seeds a collect kater summer early Autum/Fall and stored in a warm dry place until spring planting. Youu need to emulate the winter process to gett seeds to germinate well. Nature has it sorted.

Everything has a place and everything in its place. Love it. Way back in the 50's & 60's the Japanese promoted/invented a methodology called 5S, to help businesses become & stay organised. Your outdoor storage wall project kinda fulfils the first two S's - Sort & Set. Sort out what you need and what you don't. Set the things you do need in place. Toyota made 5S one of its foundation processes and I'll spare you the rest of it coz while it can save a business time and energy, it puts some people to sleep...

I had no idea that Restore was in other countries. They've been a thing here in the US for quite a long time. It was born out of Former president Jimmy Carter's labor of love, Habitat for Humanity where they build affordable homes for disadvantaged and poor people. Jimmy and his late wife Rosalynn, God rest her soul, worked for decades to build the organization and they started the HFH Restore store to recycle as much as possible. I've bought many things from there.

Great video! I've built a similar gardening/propagation area and have two suggestions for you: 1. An old pane of glass cut to size that you can put on top of your workbench is a really easy way to keep the bench clean and sterilised (the latter is really important if you're working with cuttings). You can simply take the glass out and wash it/sterilise as necessary 2. The underside of the shelves is the perfect spot for a propagation/grow light. You'll never have to worry about seed starting/leggy seedlings once you have a grow light!

Love tour garden Jess. Jess try soaking the seeds for an hour or so then spacing them on a slightly wet paper towel. Either on window sill or in fridge for a couple of days. Just check what climate they originate from. That'll tell you wether fridge or warm windowsil They'll germinate then plant them in small container with an upside down cut off bottle like a humidifier. Till they get a bit stronger. Good luck Jules from Rockingham western australia.

Just some all spectrum LED lights is what you want. You can get strips of them, can't remember if I've see scott use them. However if you get some of those in that dark space under the lean too that will help your seedlings germinate and grow up instead of sideways towards the sun. Looking foward to the kitchen video. Love some filler episodes like this that gives me my weekly dose of motivation. Neat bench and wall.

Don’t worry about those months of effort for one strawberry. Where I grew up in the middle of the US, they were slow to start from seed or transplant, then take off as an amazing, near invasive ground cover of juicy goodness. I say near invasive because they’re easy to kill by just turning the soil with a spade or hoe, they’re only “invasive” if you want and let them be. Keep up the good work, the garden and house look amazing, helping me dream of the time when I have enough saved up to take a sabbatical and do the same to our house.

Hey Jess, sorry to hear about your rubeckia germination issues. I believe the seeds need cold stratification before they will germinate. For reference, I live in Canada and we have plenty in gardens around here. To cold stratify your seeds you need to put them in a slightly moist and cool environment for a minimum of 30 days. The best way to do this would be to put them in a resealable plastic bag with a damp medium such as peat moss, paper towel of sphagnum moss. Then put the bag in your refrigerator (not freezer) for 30 days at least. Proceed to sow them in seed starting trays or directly into the ground.

They're covered with a cotton agfabric to keep moisture in while allowing light to still get through. If kept around 20-24 degrees C with ample sunlight, your rudbeckia should germinate within a couple weeks no problem. Hope this helps!

You guys could put the conservatory over the front of the carport set to the workshop-side, recycling and all that but also a great seedling nursery for Jess and more shelter for Jess at her bench . Or extend the bench to end of garage and get some of those Glass house windows and mirror the kick back of the wood panelled side - for same reason of more shelter and seed raising spot in the best spot for it!

Nice outdoor build. Make a sandbox for the digging tools. Heavy duty box about 14" sq, 12" high. Fill 3/4 with coarse sand. Pour in old engine oil/paraffin mix. When finished gardening. Dig tools into sand. Roughs off any mud & coats blade/tangs with oil, keeps clean, rust free, easier to use. Those 2nd hand windows would still be cheap $5 or $10 !!

Jess' garden looks so great! Has she ever thought about planting native plants? I am from the US so I don't know much about NZ ecology, but I do know you guys have a lot of issues with introduced species escaping and out-competing native species. This is something we struggle with in the US and everywhere I look (even in "wild" spaces) is overrun with European & Asian plants that should not be here and nothing eats, and there are noticeably fewer insects, birds, and other animals as a result. I have begun replacing all of the non-native species in my yard with native ones and it's a very interesting & rewarding journey that I think you guys would enjoy for your yard as well. Plus you will get a lot more birds, bees, and butterflies visiting you as you will be supporting them significantly more than foreign plants can! If you or Jess by chance read this, I would be happy to help you however I can, I am certainly not qualified in anyway besides this being my personal obsession but I would love to try!
