Only one thing, don't plant mint directly into the soil, it will take over. It sends out runners and will swamp that corner in a couple of years. Put it in a large plastic pot and bury that to contain the roots. Don't ask me how I know this!

I really like the thoughtful and patient way you are working with the garden and have kept a lot of the mature plants. So much of the show gardens and TV makeover programmes are based on levelling everything and spending thousands on buying plants. Our lawn has really suffered over the last year - a badger dug up parts of a high traffic area and it hasn’t recovered so far. We’re in the south and it got soaked for months and is now baked dry. I need to break it gently to the footballer in our family that he needs to move his pitch while I fix it 😊

I inherited a garden full of bindweed. I untangled a lot of it and laid it on plastic to protect the grass. Then sprayed it with root killing weed killer and now it is much better. I still have to check and top up the treatment. Better than trying to pull out the roots as it tends to like the bushes.

Love the garden, but watch the roots of those wild cherry trees. If like they're ones Sunderland council planted in Washington for Peanuts Carter's visit in 77, the roots are a nightmare, shallow & wide spreading. Most have been chopped now, but the one beside me, roots lifted the fence & came up in the lawn. Haway man where's the veggie patch & the chickens 😅 (just me missing the allotment)

Your garden is looking good now Andy and it can only get better with all of the work that you're (and Mrs Mac of course) are putting in. I love rhododendron, Azalea, Camelia, Clematis Fushia and roses. I dont longer put bedding plants or bushes that go rampant..Especially. Vine weed is not easy to get rid of put a cane to it and kill at the roots. As you've got animals. Not able to use strong chemicals. Our garden is a small space so limited plants..😢

Bindweed - Let one bit grow as the flowers quite nice, the rest paint the leaves with weedkiller, this will run into the roots from the leaves and the plant will die off

It's all looking great Andy, thanks for the update, It's nice to have both more formal and more natural areas ! If you stack all that turf, grass side down it will rot down and make excellent topsoil ! I like the garden updates but quite happy for you to carry on with occasional updates like this, with perhaps the odd project build video too, such as compost bins, etc. I wouldn't be too worried about the Hawthorn, left to their own devices they can get to 50ft high but they're easy enough to keep in check, we have a number in our hedges and keep these down to around 8-9ft and also have a stand alone tree kept to a lollypop shape at around 12ft high and 5ft diameter. Personally I'd be more worried about the Sycamore, they can get to 120ft and seed like mad. Something else to watch out for is your cherries depending on if they are grafted they can also get really big and the roots spread a long way and often push up paving etc. beautiful flowers though ! because the roots spread and are quite shallow don't be tempted to have your lawn aerated with a hollow tine corer ( yes, Tine, I know ) as everywhere it hits a root soul have another tree coming up and it will ruin your lawn, I can't believe the lawn maintenance companies don't know this !

Lovely garden! Loving seeing it come to life. Little tip with the mint you planted in the ground- it's prolific and it spread like wildfire if not contained. Would recommend putting it in a pot and burying the pot if you want a mint bush otherwise it will branch out and overtake your garden. ❤
@GosforthHandyman

If you’ve got bindweed, keeping mint under control is a bit of a holiday 😂 But you are right, the pot method works if you don’t want to fill the space. I am toying with the idea of using mint in a shady spot where the weeds overrun everything.

Looks really good , and all your hard work is definitely paying off . Like the idea of putting compost on a new lawn , to help it thicken up . We seeded our front centre area early in the year and it’s doing ok , but could do with a bit of a boost . Trouble is we have 400 hundred sq meters to cover so that would use a lot of bags of compost , so might look into bulk bags as an option . But if I can get our grass looking as good as yours , I would be a very happy bunny . Best wishes and kind regards as always. 😀👍👍👍

My jam is my lawn and love a lawn care video! Honestly best thing for the lawn is early spring and late summer get a cheap dethacher/scarifier, cut it as short as you can, use your scarifier and over seed it! Then other then that just cut it regular not to short like tou are and water it well in evenings and it will look as good as it dose now every year!

I was going to suggest a soil test. If the azalea, Peiris and blueberries take off and the rest struggle it may lean to the acidic side but then plants are very adaptable. Also a visit to Alnwick gardens (poison garden) may be worth a trip you'll find the laurel down at the end by the hemlock!! No its not that bad but can give off toxins when cut and cause dizziness. So no going up a ladder with a chainsaw when no one else is around, when they get big lol. @@GosforthHandyman
