Cool experiments Mike! I gotta show you how I'm starting my garlic out of glass Ball/Mason jars. I filled them with pebbles, and then with nutrient mix. Cut the tops of the garlic bulb, and place it on top of the pebbles in the water. It started putting out roots in just a matter of hours.

That's cool. Maybe I should try, I have two heads of garlic that did not get planted last Fall. They are just sitting around, lol.

How did it go, once the garlic bulblets began to seperate ? I tried similar, with holes cut in side of a plastic bottle. And just water and a bit of feed. It grew really well ( light through clear bottle didn't seem a problem) but I wasn't sure how to deal with the well rooted bulblets as they seperate after rooting. Normally at this stage you might stick them in the ground to grow on into a multi- bulblet fully blown garlic bulb. But its too wet here for that. I wondered about trying what you did i.e. use clay pellets, but am not sure if it would grow to full bulb without soil ?

@pingupenguin2474 growing this way produces scapes, the greens similar to chives. It will not grow new garlic bulbs, the cloves have to be planted in the ground to get a bulb.

@@pingupenguin2474 oh I was just going to plant in soil. This was just a way of getting them started. I'd love to learn if anyone else is growing them fully with hydroponics.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your channel. I love how you are always experimenting. Genius!!! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us. You are so creative and amazing. Your back yard with all its plush greenery looks like a slice of heaven. I am just beginning my venture this Spring with hydroponics and you have given me hope that this year I am going to be successful. I live in NJ, and my area has stink bugs which infiltrate my garden, killing everything. I am preparing to start microgreens in my house, and I have the buckets ready to go for when some of my microgreens become large enough to put outside in hopes that this time I'll be able to defeat the stink bugs. I am so excited and hopeful. Thank you, Mike.

Thanks. I am putting some buckets back together for people that are ok with that, which is like 80% of my audience. I am still working on many plastic free ideas, they will be in a playlist as I post them. I actually like all the plastic free options. It's cool exploring and knowing there are better ways, we just need the will and ability to do it.

Sorry I wasn't very clear @@KeepOnGrowin What I mean by being realistic is that plastics are going to be with us for a long time to come. Let's reuse them but avoid new or single use plastics where we can. We may not be able to do everything but we can all do something.

How on earth did people grow the crops before plastic ? Plastic was only invented about 100 yrs ago ! I think we have just, as a society, got into the habit of reaching for the plastic because it is easier or cheaper, and manufacturers have followed suit ( try buying a plant without it coming in a plastic pot !)

Always love to see the experiments and get new ideas! It's also helpful to see various ways to use microgreens in cooking or generally in meals. I used your mason jar self-waterer to grow baby lettuces that successfully continued growing when transferred to hydroponic containers under grow lights. I'm now on my 2nd year with outdoor hydroponic buckets. I've grown kale, celery and basil. My basil was ginormous. My kales are STILL growing since last year. I cut kale leaves to use myself and to give to my neighbor and they continue to grow new baby leaves over and over! I'm additionally trying Swiss chard and strawberries this year. Glass jars are a nice hack! I gathered up mine and made the transition ASAP. Trying cucumbers in colored quart jars from Dollar General, afraid not large enough for root system like 5 gal or 27 gal totes.

I'm liking the idea of using micro greens and sprouts as nutrients for larger fruiting and flowering plants. The fast growth of the grees means you can get a lot of it relatively quick. It would be beneficial in the seedling and vegetative stages at least.

Thank you so much for looking for ways to grow food without the use of plastics. Note, be careful with looking to use biodegradable plastics as many of them just are plastic made to break down into micro plastics - not good!

Nice video Mike. Those good compostable bags seem to break down in my compost bin in 3-6 months depending on temperature. They may take longer just buried in the soil. I loved the expectations vs reality on microgreens. Great job mate.

Love this video! Mike what suggestions do you have for shielding the plants form the weather? looks like you have an area where they are under cover and some are out in the open. Do they all get rained on or does the overhead screen protect prevent the rain from penetrating?

It's a shade house I made out of old scaffolds. I stretched pvc and a shade cloth over it. Just now pulled some cheap plastic over to protect from the rain.

What do you do with all those greens. Sure you can eat them but seems you have a huge surplus 🥹. I would not use biodegradable plastic because they can cause microplastics which go into the food. Better to use food grade plastics. Instead of ropes metal wire rings that fit and can be reused seem more sustainable and quicker for processing… But seriously respect I don’t know if I could do all that…
