My yard looks much like Bonita's. I think it takes a lot more intentional work to maintain a 'wild mess' yard than it does swaths of dead zone kentucky bluegrass. My neighbors all hate my yard, but I think they're just jealous! One woman sent her husband over to ask why I have butterflies when no one else does. I love the forest, so I've tried to mimic it in my front yard with all of the different layers. I also leave dead logs lying around for the lightning bugs. Someone once told me that you have to create the life you want to live. I want to live surrounded by trees, flowers, birds, butterflies & lightning bugs ❤

I have millions of these beautiful fireflies in my field. They love the green bean field. The can fly high up to the roof of my roof and to the top of my super tall maple tree.

We have a tiny yard, but we normally get about 1 trillion times more fireflies than any neighbors , we leave a lot of wild growth and generally rip up grass when ever possible
@BerriesandBushcraft

that's amazing! If only more lawns could be like yours the world would be filled with more magic 💖🥰

People always ask me about getting fireflies/glowworms to release in their gardens. My usual response is to get their garden in line with their needs first and to invide them this way instead! Nice video on exactly that topic!

Fun fact: Hannibal Lecter (of the tv series) was practicing firefly friendly gardening as a young man...

I haven't seen fireflies since I was a kid in Japan in the '50's. We used to catch them and put them in jars but I don't remember releasing them. Kids are heartless. I was hoping to see them when I visited my brother in Ohio during couple of summers but never did. They're so magical.

I remember doing the same but I let them go after a few nights to have double for the big release.

Down in Louisiana, at least in my little corner, we get fireflies as early as April

Wow! Yes, I expect your April weather is much like our late-May or early-June weather 😁 Meanwhile, in April many of the leaves on our trees are only just starting to think about coming out!

Hi Bonita, love your yard. I live a couple of streets over from you and am blessed by firefly light too. Good to see you online.

The fireflies I had on my land in the Alps showed a detectable bias toward the common ivy edge with its trimmings and relative compost. So, it may help to observe your own population.

It’s a great concise teaching video. I love Bonita and Sebastian for their contribution to the environment. I will look for the book. Light pollution and squeaky clean lawns doesn’t make our neighbourhood eco friendly. I’m trying to get my city to turn off lights that are on all night close to my pollinator community garden. Do you have any links or references that I can give to the city about lights?

I'm also in eastern ontario and found this video looking them up after seeing them in my backyard in the evening while I was letting out my dog. So many of them! And since they flash as the sun is setting you can still see them without their light and I caught one which was pretty easy because they are slow flyers. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure they realize their flashes would be wasted while sitting in a bottle so they just never did so I released him.

In the mid south we see lots of fire flies in spring when it is not freezing and is moist. If it dries out in late June through September they go away. They need rain And dew to mature.
@BerriesandBushcraft

That's so neat to hear how different the ones in our Canadian climate need the weather. Ours only begin to come out in June!

Worms are no longer present many places to keep walking into bodies of water, not only when it's raining. They used to feed the food chains of the bodies of water no longer with those life forms tied to that reason; the loss of the worms. And so the birds eat other, etc..
