"Back in the day" there was no such thing as Gardening, just the 2 minute time allowance and 4 laps of Speedway. But this race from 1986 between the Boston Barracudas and Poole Wildcats just goes to show that riders just played along with the 2 minute time allowance. The 2 minute time allowance in 2024 is just used by riders in a different way. The reference video is from the 2020 Wroclaw Speedway Grand Prix, Heat 5.

That gardening thing is just nerves, mainly. You don't want to line up in a deep rut, obviously, but does it make a difference in the actual success of the start? Not really. Many think wrongly that reaction time at the start is critical, but when you factor in the first turn shuffle, and and drag race down the back straight, it become clear that it's only a small part of the start.

Gardening is a funy one for me, it doesn't bother me but seems to really annoy other fans. I noticed when I take newbies it doesn't seem to bother them either, because they see the 2 minute counter going down they assume it's all part of the build up to the race I guess!
