Jim Davis' Garfield the cat first appeared in animated form in The Fantastic Funnies (1980), a strange special hosted by Loni Anderson. It was produced by Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez who produced the Peanuts specials, and who did the first few Garfield specials afterward. Garfield was played by Scott Beach, who voiced "The Death Star plans are not in the main computer" in Star Wars, among other things. The animation adapts a few early strips which had a fatter design for Garfield, and the thinner design here isn't quite right. They're still figuring out how to draw the cat. This follows a Tumbleweeds segment, which Jim Davis also worked on. You can see the whole special here with thanks to FuzzyMemories:

It's insane how Garfield was the "newcomer" and ended up becoming bigger than all the other characters. Lorenzo Music hadn't even voiced him yet.

Interesting fact, before Lorenzo Music was chosen, Sterling Holloway auditioned to voice him for Here Comes Garfield. Garfield could have shared the same voice as Winnie the Pooh.

Well, the two Terrytoons shorts in 1942 had nice animation, even though they de-frizzed Nancy's hair. It's jarring since her hairstyle is such an iconic part of her image, but in fairness I don't think even Disney would have gone to the trouble of fully animating that frizz. It would have been a real pain under deadline and budget.

So very odd not hearing Lorenzo Music here as Garfield. His voice just resonated with me as a kid, simply because I loved Garfield so much. Oddly enough, and I think many people would say the same, I often confused his voice for that of Bill Murray's as a child. I know that was the initial person they were going for, but for some reason I think Lorenzo music sounds more like Bill Murray than Bill Murray does. Yeah. I know. I don't get it either.

I know Thom somehow didn't like doing voice acting and that Jim Davis had to twist his leg, but I find it funny he was the original Jon voice before Lorenzo was Garfield and he didn't return to the character for "Here comes Garfield." And it's a shame, too. He was excellent in Garfield media.

I was really surprised to see Mike Doonesbury here. Doonesbury wasn't often discussed in the same circles as other comics. It always kind of stood apart (I guess partly as a result of many editors placing it on the opinion pages away from the other strips). And its sensibilities were just very different from many of its older contemporaries. Cathy fit a little better into this crowd despite being another '70s new-waver --- can't quite put my finger on why. It is so weird to see Snoopy hanging out with other dogs and actually ACTING like a dog. Of COURSE Broom-Hilda is voiced by June Foray. Who else. 😆

Lorenzo Music could be this version of Garfield, but Scott Beach could never be the later, wide-eyed Garfield. That's not a slam on him, he just wouldn't sound right with Garfield's later look and personality.

Lot of those comics have not aged well Garfield is more timeless i guess but what am i sayin Garfield has been terrible for years... also just f Dagwood And Marmaduke is Scooby? Its nice to see women with sexuality back in ye olden times
