Schulz, Mort Walker, Hank Ketcham, Johnny Hart, Brad Anderson (no relation to Loni), Dean Young and Jim Raymond, Morrie Turner, Mell Lazarus, Russell Myers, Dik Browne, Cathy Guisewite, and John Cullen Murphy; and segments with comic strip characters Doonesbury, Broom-Hilda, Momma, Drabble, Cathy, Hagar the Horrible, Pogo, Tumbleweeds, Miss Peach, B.C., Beetle Bailey, Blondie, Dick Tracy, Barney Google, Alley Oop, Prince Valiant, Peanuts, Wee Pals, Dennis the Menace, Nancy, Little Orphan Annie, Fred Basset, Marmaduke, Flash Gordon, Popeye - and, in his first animated appearance, Garfield the cat.

Only two years, and Garfield was already making animated appearances. Shows you how much he had blown up since his introduction. Also, it's admittedly a bit weird seeing him behave like an actual cat.

It's called Early Installment Weirdness, they even make fun of it in some of the comics where Garfield meets his Past Self. When he first started out he was almost perfectly ordinary except he was exceptionally fat, even bigger than he is now. He walked on four legs, not two, and the only thing that differentiated him from most other cartoon animals is that The Audience was always privy to his thoughts

@@KairuHakubi I know right?! It is weird. I think Thom Huge was supposed to voice Jon in “Here Comes Garfield” but didn’t because maybe he was unavailable. I am not sure. I don’t even know what really went on behind the scenes that made them cast Sandy Kenyon for Jon in that special, and replace Thom Huge only to get him back after that. Scott Beach did a good job as an early, prototype Garfield but Lorenzo Music will always truly be Garfield to me and many others.

The best part of this program (which I remember vividly and fondly from childhood) is watching the artists draw. Truly nothing random about their work; the most iconic comic characters of all time are deceptively simple; they're actually carefully thought out and designed lines and forms, as Charles Schutz suggests at 11:23. Fascinating.

Okay I just came here to see the Garfield stuff but I watched the whole thing because it was so cool to see the short bits with the comic creators right at the height of the industry. Most of these folks have passed away in the time since. Also wow is it weird seeing Johnny Hart joking about getting drunk and drawing cavemen... I guess this was filmed just before he swerved into the born-again Christian scene.

🌚As a child, I looked forward to the special presentations on CBS on the weekends and student holidays.😀 Because I didn't know the concept of TV corporate sponsorships in my childhood, I thought that some logos on TV were out to mesmerize children to not stay up past a certain time at night or get sucked in by a powerful vortex to a strange dimension! I overcame the facetious fear when I was 19; and wished that I could read comic strips in newspapers and TV again!😛
