Garifuna - A Culture Close to Extinction 

I plan to learn too. Shame isn't it? I wish Rosetta stone would help us especially because the language is endangered. That happens when your heritage is not known. Did you know we are probably descended from pre columbian africans!?

Teach your children about their ancestors and the beautiful island of St, Vincent and the Grenadines, where they from.

Teach the babies, the children our illustrious Garifuna culture. Its never to late family, the time is now.

Opinunate ted That's why Garifunas from Belize , act different to other garifunas like them , the original are from Honduras , meaning no ashamed of being garifuna.

I don't want to see my culture die out. Something needs to be done about this. Although I was born here in the United States of America, I still consider myself Garifuna because both of my parents are Garifuna. It is sad that young Garifuna people born here in the United States, listen to too much Hip Hop music and live like African Americans. They don't even cook the food that our ancestors ate. Me I love my Garifuna culture and I refuse to live a life like an African American. I don't even like Hip Hop music like that.

@Allen Francisco Garifuna people who were born and raised here in the United States hardly speak the Arawakan language. They listen to Hip Hop music and they act just like African Americans. They forget where they come from and it is sad to see that. The Garifuna people born here in the United States are not African Americans. They are still Garifuna and they should stick to that.

The African slaves escaped from the ships and later intermarried with the original inhabitants of the island of St. Vincent who were the yellow and red Caribs and the Awaraks and created the black Caribs or Garifuna.

The Carib men intermarried with the Arawakan women after killing the Arawakan men and created the Yellow or Red Caribs. There are people saying that the Garifuna people came directly from Africa which is false. There is no origins or evidence about the Garinagu people originating in Africa. The Caribs and the Arawaks were the original inhabitants of St. Vincent in the Caribbean. There were slave ships that were wrecked on the island of St. Vincent.... The black Africans escaped from those slave ships and got help from the Caribs and the Arawakan people. Sometime later the black African slaves intermarried with the Yellow or Red Caribs and created the Black Caribs or Garifuna race.

I can see how the emphasis on extinction can be alarmist, nevertheless, this piece is closer to the truth than we would like to admit. Garifuna culture is taking a shift toward loss than gain. We need to imprint ourselves so that we can stay a vibrant culture.

Actually, we are Africans who settled on a few Caribbean islands. The island of Yurumein wrongly called St Vincent was just one of our strongholds. If you are from that island may the blessings of our ancestors be on you

They forget about the Caribs and the Arawaks who originally came from South America and migrated to St. Vincent years later. The Africans who were on slave ships escaped to the island of St. Vincent and later intermarried with the Caribs and the Arawak Indians which created the black Caribs.
