The warning on this specific tornado came 5 to 7 minutes after it touched down. The storm had weakened on radar and velocity dropped. It recycled and dropped this monster before radar and velocity indicators caught up. That's why the new warning was late being issued. If you were watching the weather channel, you saw it live BEFORE the warning went off.
Actually the warning for this storm was issued at 6:39. From the actual warning: THERE ARE TWO STORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING TORNADOES. ONE JUST SOUTHEAST OF DOWNTOWN DALLAS... ONE NEAR BALCH SPRINGS. BOTH STORMS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND MOVING NORTHEAST. * THIS DANGEROUS STORM WILL BE NEAR... SUNNYVALE AROUND 645 PM CST. DALLAS...GARLAND...RICHARDSON...ROWLETT...ROCKWALL AND SACHSE AROUND 700 PM CST. MURPHY AROUND 705 PM CST. WYLIE...LUCAS AND PARKER AROUND 710 PM CST They did an excellent job of getting the warnings out. The issue was many people unfortunately did not have a way of hearing them and being nighttime, it is very difficult to see them.
I remember this day vividly. It was so hot and humid for December. Even by Texas standards. I remember saying how odd the weather was several times during the day. Wow. Little did we know what the evening had in store for us.
Same, I was at a friends house and around late afternoon I started noticing how weird the clouds were and checked the weather to find out that we were under a tornado watch. It was a very scary day
I got pulled into it. Going on chisa rd in Rowlett then we hopped onto the highway going fast heading to plano state farms parking gradge and ew went down
I was at home in south Garland and was going to go visit a friend in Rowlett. I had minor surgery a few days before and thought I was well enough to go see him, but at the last minute decided to stay home to rest more. It was a good thing I did because I would have taken I-30 to PGBT where this was in order to get to his house. I should have been paying attention to the weather that evening =(
I was at a hospital in N. Sunnyvale when it happened. I was hospitalized because of influenza "a" and after it hit the hospital had to be evacuated. Scariest day of my life.
It boils my blood seeing those cars just standing still! There was plenty of time for them to speed up and drive down the bridge, if that one guy didn't stop they would've all survived.
i remember this day very well. I lived just barely east of the tornado and my dad filmed almost the entire thing until it was probably within 1 mile. I was lucky to have surived honestly
I remember being in Dallas that evening for the Peter Plan play and the play was cut off early and we all had to take cover. After the tornado passed and we were heading back to Rockwall, we had to take a long detour due to closed off roads and power lines and trees. Saw all the homes that were damaged in Rowlett off Dalrock. Broke my heart
I remember this. It took my friends house who didn’t live very far from me. Took my shed, my childhood toys, some shingles off the house, and it weakened my patio. I remember sitting in the dark, under a blanket, and the house extremely hot. The next day, my roof caved in and I had to live with it for the next 2 weeks. That sucked.
Probally stuff he had packed away and stored that he played with when he was a kid. Likely stored in the attic which is one of the first things to go in a tornado.
@@rolandmiller5456 yes sadly you’re right. I watched it a few more times and you can clearly see that. So terrible to know you’re witnessing someone’s final moments.
all the people that say how can u not see it coming I'm just going to say that it was 7 at night the day after Christmas and we couldn't see anything outside. 10 people died in garland and my city rowlett is lucky that no one died. y'all weren't there to see it happen. it was devistating. I was I. forney with my dad that weekend and I actually saw the tornadoes form right In front of me. U don't know how sad u was to see the something that wrecked so many of my friends houses and other people's houses. houses are still being built and it's been 6 months since its happened.
Aria Montanya I was in mesquite visiting my dad while my mom stepdad and little sister was at home. They heard the tornado pass right before the power went out. Two of my best friends lost there house in rowlett but are safe.
Aria Montanya gee you would expect a tornado that bad in May or April, but not December!! I guess Santa wanted revenge on the kids who hated there toys that they got for christmas
I have an urge to write a comment in the style of an annoying “well, duh” IMDB trivia fact. Here goes.... This video is set is Garland, Texas. Judy Garland played Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz, which has a tornado in it.
This day scars me i was at dave and busters in dallas and i remember i was at the prize center and everybody started a commotion and everybodys phones started sounding alerts we went outside and heard sirens we left and started heading home we were on the 635 and exited near the walmart so we stopped at little ceasers to get pizza idk why but we did lol then sirens started wailing again and then the wind started getting strong (the tornado was crossing highways) we got in little ceasers the lights went out and then everything calmed down we went back home seeing police cars pass by like every 3 seconds we saw everything on the news later
I am shocked by what I just saw. The first cam showing the George Bush toll way way unbelievable to me it's just terrifying. My heart goes out to the family's of all victims in this tragedy.
I’ll never understand how that many people can be unaware of a tornado near them. Gotta be prepared. I live in Alabama and anytime there’s a tornado watch, I’m checking periodically
Jeezus Christ I remember this so clearly, I was actually in Rowlett at the time celebrating Christmas when I was like literally 5 years old and I remember hearing a train sound and running to the stairs closet- from where we were all we saw was the sky pitch black…..
Living 15 mins away across the lake I remember this day so well. It was the day after Christmas and temperatures where up to 80 degrees, very unusual for that heat in winter in Texas. I was playing with the toys I got when I remember fox 4 news was talking about this outbreak on its way (will continue on later I’m busy)
You guys dont see that when they are out as uneventful weather hits they had no clue it was gonna be there till it hits UNLESS they were warned by the channel they have on. Which i don't think they warned people on
Is that a person in a white t-shirt getting up and running off the side of the road @ 2:59? A little right of the center of the picture, sort of in front of the support column.
I was on PGBT 4 hours before the storm near Rowlette coming home and a bunch of people died on that overpass. That tornado was scary because it came out of nowhere after we thought we were safe. Buddy of mine who lost his house jumped into a sewer drain in the street. Saved his life.
If I ever encountered any one of those bad boys, I would exit off the freeway and find me a nearest shelter b4, it reaches me. I am from Houston and we rarely get tornadoes but we had our share of them but not 2 the point where it killed people. We rarely get a tornado that huge and destructive, but I have seen tornadoes on documentaries that hit outside of tornado alley. I have relatives in the metroplex (Dallas - my dad's relatives) (Ft. Worth - my mom's relatives). If Houston gets a tornado that destructive like the one in Garland. We don't have enough protection as our neighbors 2 the north.
I grew up in the Galveston area. I moved to Dallas when I was 18....boy was that ever a shock. I kinda treated a tornado warning like "eh, whatever we're just going through the motions but nothing is going to happen". Then I first experienced the alarms going off LOUD throughout the city and I was like "WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?!". I was used to Hurricanes lol.
We just moved to rowlet by the tolls near the i30 exit . Next to the lake. I can always feel the storms stronger here then anywhere else I lived in dallas before
that first video is at the interchange of interstate 30 and president george bush turnpike. I remember when i went with my family to see my cousins and we drove by that area a week after the tornado hit there
The first cam Shows the Intersection connection Bush and 30 right where most People died. Tornado went right through that intersection. One man driving on that fork was killed by the tornado on his was to propose to his Wife. Sad story...
I was heading to work from caddo mills on 30 west it was about 6:45 or so and I came over the lake and seen lighting streak across the sky and the mfer was right out of the corner of my eye. I literally almost crapped my pants
Listen up you stupid idiot, my daughter and grandson died in that tornado! She was on her way home and had no idea that Storm was about to hit, She was so afraid of bad weather! She was on the freeway when the car she was riding in ran straight into the tornado. My life changed and will never be the same, she also left two little girls with me that day they have to wake up everyday for the rest of their lives without a mom! It was also my middle daughter birthday so she died on her sister bd! If it wasn't for my Lord and savior we would all be in a mental institution? So please stop insinuating, #ifyouonlyknew#prayerchangesthing#ripmybelovedkim&kam#missingyallimensly#Jesus
+ Mtomp_753: Not only in Texas. Between December 23-25 of the same year, tornadoes touched down in Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Illinois, Mississippi and Alabama. Hell, even Australia was hit with one on December 16 (EF2).
just a question . why ppl still go out in the cars and in sites where tornadoes are expected or notified by weather channels ?? I.live in a country where there are no such terrifying weather , however, we dont understand ppl there dont abide by the warnings and still go out in cars !
+Batool Alomar With the current technology of tornado tracking, storm chasers have to go out and place down probes that will record data of the tornado. Unfortunately, they also need to get in the line of the tornado to get accurate data. That being said, there are also people who do it for the thrills , or a killer RU-vid video.
+Batool Alomar tornadoes usually don't happen here in December, it was a Sunday evening after Christmas a lot of people were out shopping that night and had not heard the weather for that day
+TheBolillo310 Holiday or no holiday, any day of the week people do not pay attention and/or fail to heed warnings. Severe weather happens in the metroplex area all year around.
I live in Garland. Here in Texas, tornado warnings are rather common and very rarely an actual tornado. Would I go out? No. However, I was watching Evan Andrews on Fox 4 the entire storm. He was laughing and saying that he would be really surprised if a tornado came out of this, and if it did, it would be weak and "thready." We are used to false warnings, so add in a weather man saying it was fine....there ya go. It was the day after Christmas. No one expected this or could have believed the devastation and death to come! Just after Evan laughed the tornado threat away, we heard several transformers blow....one after the other. We ran to the door and all was still and quiet, but I knew. I looked back at the tv trying to let reality sink in....news nothing/I hear and felt the tornado. It hit at the highway and traveled down it. It's easy to judge in hindsight, but people died and lost their homes. It's much more than a 30-second clip and saying what you would've done. These people were stuck by the time They realized and they died horrible, terrifying deaths being blown off an overpass. Show some compassion.
You know, I dont want to offend anyone, But, What I see are people just driving around carrying on their daily lives, completely oblivous to the fact that there is a deadly life threatening tornado right there...... Wow... Just wow... "Hey guys, Whats that? Oh nothing, just a house fire smoke." No, thats a tornado! We will be fine, lets stop here! right in its path! "Warning. You are approaching a twisting storm, proceed with caution". Naa well be fine. It just sickens me really..
+THEtechknight This storm came out of nowhere on a Saturday night, the day after Christmas.. It was dark, and rain wrapped, and crossed the highway nearly immediately after reaching its largest and deadliest size... People driving would have had little to no warning, and it was probably the last thing on their minds after a nice 75 degree Saturday.
+Adam Baxter Exactly Adam! This storm hit, not only after warm weather, but the day after Christmas! It was out of the blue and people could not see it! You actually think they would purposefully drive in an EF-4 tornado? At least 11 people died! In Garland (where I live), the deaths were all people whose cars were blown off the overpass. By the time They realized what was happening, all they could do was hope and pray....and unfortunately, it wasn't enough. This tornado was devastating.
But they send out warnings even on ur cell phones , I don't get it either , you have to be paying attention at some point and see that weather is coming, especially in texas
Adam Baxter lighting flashes and transformers blowing would give an indication of a tornado on the ground to anyone driving and this was a very large tornado, that's why people need to pay attention to there surroundings because I'm pretty sure that the ones that died had they been paying more attention they would've seen the power flashes and the lighting flashes showing the very large tornado and would have avoid it,but instead they were not paying attention and their mind was on other things then they drive right into the tornado and then it's to late.
