Filmed on June 24, 2024. After transplanting some more zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes I interview my younger brother about how he harvests, dries and stores his 20,000 garlic bulbs that are sold through our many farmer's markets.

This is amazing. I've watched many of your videos in the last couple of weeks. My parents do farmers markets too...but we only farm on 10 acres. They refuse to incorporate technology and do almost everything by hand, planting and weeding. It is so time-consuming. They spend at least 12 hours everyday on the farm. I am now helping them due to their health issues...now have my own farmers market stand the last 2 years and seems like this is something I can do. Me and my husband learned a lot from your videos. Your methods and models is what we aim for...We appreciate it and wish to be as successful as you one day.

Thanks for the detailed comment. I really appreciate it. Sounds like you have some really hard-working folks and I hope their health continues to allow them to farm for years to come, but it definitely takes a toll on your body over time. We are actually scaling back about 50% next year because all my kids are grown out of the house and none of them want to come back to the farm so I am in search of a farm manager otherwise it’s all gonna go away someday because I’m ready to start slowing down at age 50. It’s been a good career , but without the right help on the farm it’s just too much for me to continue on the way I’m doing things So we’re really gonna work on simplifying and streamlining things for next year.

Thanks John! We kind of all do our own things on the farm but it works well for us that way...allows us to be more diverse.

I would love to learn about the history of you, your family, and your farm. It saddens me that big corporations are taking over our family owned and run farms.

Another great video. Looks like a good garlic crop. Tractors make the work so much quicker. We are in the 100's daily now in N Tx,

Yeah, it will be a really fun one for me to put together but will have to be a winter project. In the meantime, here is a short veggie farm history video from about 9 years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T_WnueyMZRM.htmlsi=h7HZHMTXr_K6VdOe

So glad you both did this update. I always have garlic in my house, and use it on almost everything I cook. Hey, should I keep my fresh galic in my fridge or in my dark pantry?
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Месяц назад
I believe the pantry would be best, my brother told me that a cooler is too cold and can make it sprout, 55-65 degrees with low humidity the best

I just dug up our garlic in northern wyoming. Of course no where near the amount you have! Still about 150 heads, with the dreaded shovel. Where is your farm located? Good luck with all of your hard-earned crops!
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms 15 дней назад
Yeah that sounds like some serious manual labor there. We are in North West Central Ohio

Is zucchini that popular in the USA? I run a produce dept in Canada, big grocery store 15+ years and I only sell 20 lbs a day. Is it grown because it's easy to grow?
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms 9 дней назад
I never really thought of it as a popular item but we are able to sell quite a bit at our 9 locations throughout the week, usually pretty close to 3000 pounds a week

Did you wisely move away from dairy? Substitute Veg? But, still using synthetics?
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Месяц назад
We sold the dairy in 2001 because we were all tired of milking cows and it was a good time to get out with prices being high. And my produce business was really taking off at that time as well and I went full-time that year. We use a combination of synthetic and organically labeled products. Nothing synthetic touches my greenhouse plants and most of the insecticides and fungicides I use outside are organically labeled, but we still use synthetic herbicides.

What's your spray program on top of plastic? I used dual ant it controlled grasses but the broadcast need work.
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Месяц назад
Yes we use dual as well but I also add command 3ME on everything but tomatoes and eggplant. I also add 1 oz of Sandea/Permit/Promote.

Im not a farmer and this is probably a dumb question, could you or would it be worth it to use your transplanter without the water wheel to pull the garlic maybe save your backs?
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Месяц назад
actually Joel has tried that and many other things but when it comes to pulling it up out of the soil it you need some leverage sometimes since they're anchored in pretty good...

Thanks for all of your Ohio farming videos! My big question is what does one do with 20,000 heads of garlic? Will the farmers markets buy that much?
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Месяц назад
Yep, we sell it all every year at the farmers' markets...when you go to nearly a dozen locations weekly it goes quick!
@wild_insomnia
@wild_insomnia Месяц назад
What's the price of a garlic head right now ?
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Месяц назад
He just put it on the trucks last week and I'm trying to remember the price that I saw, I believe it was $1.50 per bulb for the big ones and the small ones he puts 4 in a pint container for $5.
