Hey Sir ER doc and flight surgeon here. Great video just a heads up a pulse ox can’t tell the difference btw oxyhemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin (for CO poisoning). So pulse ox usually normal with CO poisoning.
Agree on all points. I have returned the previous D2 Air, but this one will most likely hold. A cool addition would be automatic activation of Pulse Ox when the watch detects you fly.
I love mine. Only "issues" I have with it are to do with the software and are very minor. Even then, it's mainly just adding more options. Such as adding the weather glance to be on the face for when I'm not around the airfield. Or more options to put on the shortcut key. So really I have no complaints so far!
The oximeter will not help for detecting carbon monoxide. In fact, carbon monoxide will read falsely high on the oximeter. Still need the CO detector. The oximeter is good for hypoxia related to altitude though.
Thanks for bringing this up. This is a critical point to make, since the oximeter in these watches is marginal at best, and without a CO-oximeter, it is useless in high CO, and might give the pilot a false sense of security. Probably worth making a correction to the video.
I bought the Garmin D2 Bravo, when it first came, about 7 years, ago. Probably, will purchase this watch, much user friendly, than the bravo, since it had much too many widgets, to work..
Great videos and information. I would like to correct one misquote. Carbon Monoxide poisoning cannot be detected by any pulse oximeter. The pulse oximeter will falsely show elevated oxygen saturation when the hemoglobin is bound to CO. The light absorption spectrum cannot differentiate between oxyhemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin. It only differentiates between deoxygenated hemoglobin and oxygenated hemoglobin. Please DO NOT rely on any pulse oximeter to detect CO poisoning. At this time the only option is a good and properly calibrated CO monitor. Thanks
Thank you for this. I have had it pointed out after making this video, but not to the detail you did. Thank you for sharing. It will still help identify hypoxia from altitude but good to know not from CO.
Nice watch. I have the fenix 7x. I wonder if aviation programming could be added? I would like to see the the d2 air x10 with solar. That is one of the big things for me.
Wish there was a vibrate setting for the notifications. I’ll be in a quiet room and it’s so loud. Other than that it’s been great for flights and exercise.
Great video! I just got my private pilots license 4 months ago and am currently working on my instrument rating and have been working on it for around 2 months now struggling to get ready to take the written I’m currently scoring low to mid 80’s on the practice tests. Any tips for the instrument written/flying? My goal is to get all the way up to being a commercial pilot and then to the airlines when I’m 21! Thanks so much! Can’t wait to keep following along and learning more!
Great review. I got one of them but I couldn't see and access all those 50 Contacts with Phone Numbers on this X10 Watch itself which were set/added up in Garmin Connect app on my phone so I couldn't tap dial/call any of those contact directly on the X10 watch. What about you?
@@grzegorzo4875 ja nie jestem pilotem (niestety :)) ale lubię ten klimat i podobają mi się zegarki z lotniczym zacięciem. Szukam czegoś do treningów a ten dodatkowo jest lotniczy 🙂
Could you show the golf feature for this watch as I like to play golf when on contract so would be great if it has a good golf feature. Showing courses and distances etc. Thanks.
I have a question, without getting into the medical aspects of pulse oximeters with regard to CO. It takes a special type of pulse oximeter to differentiate between oxygenated blood and CO (200% more affinity than oxygen). Can this watch actually tell the difference between Oxygen and Carbon monoxide?
Honestly after making this video I have done some more research and I’m not sure. It will Definitely be able to tell you hypoxia for altitude, but I’m hesitant to confirm the ability to tell it for CO.
@Mike Herron, you are correct. A standard pulse ox will not detect CO. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin to make Carboxyhemoglobin. The wavelength of light associated with Carboxyhemoglobin is similar to oxyhemoglobin, so the pulse ox will read normal oxygen saturation even if there is significant carbon monoxide poisoning. This is well-documented, and in medical practice there are other ways to diagnose this, none of which are available on the plane. In short, there is no replacement for a CO detector in the airplane.
Great video. I was considering buying the Fenix 6 but now this seems like an upgrade. However i do wonder how rugged this watch can be. I do fly but i also like to hike and swim. Would it have the same gps capabilities and water depth resistance as a fenix? Also is there a sapphire option for this watch? Thanks!
Cool video. Thanks Does the watch display altitude, and changes in altitude. I intend to use it for Paragliding wherein we have a variometer beeping during climbs in thermals. Would it help as a backup? Beeping is not so important as long as it can display the change in altitude in under a sec.
Hello. Great video. Where the watch takes airports data? Online? I can use it in Italy? Make calls means also talk using mic and speaker from watch? Thanks a lot
I believe all same but you get moving maps, and the ability to connect with Garmin in reach to send emergency signals. Mach 1 cannot take or make calls, no voice control. Basically the edge is the moving maps and emergency mode.
How would the pulse oximeter on this watch distinguish from CO poisoning vs Hypoxia. Traditional pulse oximeters are unable to distinguish between the two.
It can’t. The same amount of oxygen molecules can be found on the hemoglobin, which is all an oximeter reads. If CO poisoning occurs the O2 will not be released from the hemoglobin, giving you the hypoxia.
Hello everyone I love this watch I have two questions? 1. Is that watch is like military grade as Forerunner watches which means roughest ? and 2. Can we connect this watch with our ipad or phone for display while flying?
As someone who is about to start UPT, is this something you’d recommend? Looking to get my first smart watch and will be doing a ton of flying as you know and wanted the normal features of a smart watch (daily health and workouts) in addition. So cool you got to be a thunderbird pilot!
Congrats on UPT. If you get Sheppard IFF let me know, I’ll be one of your instructors. As far as the watch, If you are in the market for a smartwatch and you fly, I highly recommend the air X10. It has all the features of the Fenix series, is cheaper, and has some cool flying features. If you want to track your flights well, maybe look at the Mach 1. Under G’s the X10 doesn’t update with the GPS as much as the Mach 1 meaning that in aerobatics (or hopefully BFM later) the Mach 1 will track the maneuvers really well. The x10 has more zig zag line tracking. It is also twice the price, so just depends on your budget. Both are great options though. Check out my Mach 1 review. Good luck in UPT!
@@DozenDuzit thanks for the reply! I watched your review of the Mach 1 and like the features. It looks quite a bit larger, did you find it to be an encumbrance to flying/daily life/workouts? Aside from the price, that’s the other piece that is the major drawback for me. Thanks again!
Respectfully recommend that you take down the pulse ox section. Pulse oximeters interpret oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, but the wavelength of light from Carboxyhemoglobin gets interpreted as oxyhemoglobin (i.e. oxygenated blood). That means that you can have terrible carbon monoxide poisoning, while a pulse oximeter will read normal. This is well-documented, and in medical practice there are other ways to detect carbon monoxide poisoning. In a plane, the only help you have for detecting CO is a CO detector. Pulse oximeters are great tools but not for CO poisoning.
Does this functionality depend on you buying subscription services from Garmin? Or do all the altimeters etc and metar info work without you continually needing to pay?
No subscription is required for all of the aviation features such as altimeter, metars, weather, ect. My team and I have been flying with them now for a few months and have been really impressed.
Nice video. Can you download music to the watch without Spotify or similar subscription service? On my Galaxy watch I can download my own music from the phone to the watch. Thanks.
Hey Fernando, You can totally download your own music or audio files to the watch. I believe there is an application for that you will need called Garmin Express which allows you to link your computer to your watch and move the music over.
Hi! What navigation can we do WITHOUT Garmin Pilot? I could see it has an airport inventory worldwide, but can we have a bunch of local way points stored (or even customized points) and fly a SEQUENCE of them easily using the HSI interface? (just jumping to the next one when passing by the current one)
This watch isn’t intended for primary navigation. It helps check weather, quickly look up info on airports, track your flights and navigate to airports if need be along with many other things, but it doesn’t store waypoints that can be used to fly sequences that I know of.
Can it connect to onboard avionics like GTX-345 or Flightstream 210 to get weather information in flight? Otherwise, how does it get weather update information in flight? Thank you!!
It gets it’s weather info from your phone. If you are flying for a while, and out of cellphone coverage, you are going to need some type of ADSB-in device or satellite to get updated weather.
You can select inches, mmHG, Millibars, or Hectopascals. I checked and the METAR will display the units you have selected for barometric pressure, but It doesn’t adjust for visibility or cloud heights in Metric.
I am not sure. I know that would make the battery life drain rapidly. Like most smart watches, it turns on quickly when you move your wrist to look at it or hit a button. I thought it might annoy me, but the programming is pretty good and I hardly notice the screen isn’t on a lot of the time.
Hey Dozen! Awesome video and loved how you shared about what you liked about this watch. Just wanted to ask, is this watch capable of displaying Traditional Chinese or do you know if it can be downloaded? As My previous Garmin D2 Delta PX couldn’t, and thus it wasn’t very useful when it came to displaying notifications on my watch without pulling out my phone. It’ll be awesome if you could please check it out for me when you have time! Cheers!
Great Review . Please let your viewers know the battery is not replaceable meaning after three or four years your watch will go to trashcan. Shame on Garmin.
Hello! Congratulations for your videos, those are really interesting and usefull. Please, help me with my new D2 AIR X10, How can I receive the whatsapp notifications in it? Best regards from Chile and thanks in advance.
