is the GPS actually in the watch or is it pared with an actual GPS to give it the data? In other words, if we get just the watch, is that all we'll need or do we have to get something else to use the features?

The GPS is built-in and there's an installed worldwide airport database - so it's self-contained. The free Garmin Connect app or the Garmin Pilot app can add features, but the watch works great by itself.
