There are 2 VERY DIFFERENT Garmin ECHOMAP UHD2 chartplotters on the market in 2023. The newly released model WAY BACK in the spring of 2022 was introduced as a NO FRILLS budget chartplotter while the latest model announced in January 2023 is drastically different equipped with a touchscreen, WiFi and ethernet communications, bundled with a UHD Transducer.

I found this out today. You cannot share wifi information from a UHD to UHD2 unit. They both must be UHD2 in the Echomap series. I returned an Ultra106sv for a UHD2 93sv today. Thankful for Bass Pro return policy. 5:02 in this video confuses me. I was on the phone with Garmin for over an hour today to confirm the Ultra106sv will not sync wirelessly over wifi with the UHD2 series.

Great information, they had just released it and the specialist confirmed what they wrote in the news release, I’ll get that edited out of the video. Thanks for the feedback!!

Back in a new PA14 so now I need to focus on a FF. Garmin will be the way I go. Good enough in the field means good enough on the water for me.

I put UHD2 9” with livescope on my old town kayak a couple of weeks ago, replacing an an old Lowrance, which I passed on to my nephew. Fished one tournament with it so far, and I really like it so far. I have multiple finders of all 3 major manufacturers on my 3 boats (fishing charter owner), but since the release of livescope, im really leaning towards putting Garmin on everything. It started on my Bass boat (my “personal leisure boat)”, seeing how well the Garmin Force, Garmin 8600, and mercury engine worked together was eye opening, but I was skeptical about livescope in salt water. Then I added it to my 30’ Boston Whaler, and immediately my charter guests started catching more stripers. I put Active Target on my Angler 220, and while it is still really good, I prefer Livescope. I’m looking at Mako now, 20’ which would be a dedicated Striped bass/Mackerel charter, and im trying to decide if I should try the Hummingbird forward facing live sonar, or just drop another Garmin on it. I may go hummingbird because I like new toys, but that Livescope 64 looks great as well. (Though if someone is looking at Active Target, I want to be clear, it’s still an incredible system and does exactly what the Garmin does. You WILL love it.

Rick, I will stay with the regular UHD hardwire network connection. I prefer the reliability of the hardwire connection over a wifi connection all day long specially in a boat so the wifi capability is not worth the upgrade for me. Thank you for the update.
@DoubleTFishing

Seems like everything is going wireless, I would have to agree that cable connected networks are more reliable in a controlled environment. Have a great day Santiago!!
@Stonehorn
@Stonehorn Год назад
There is no problem whatsoever with wifi connection between chartplotters. This is typical old man stuff. “I don’t like that technology I don’t understand, this one must be better because it has a chord!” The Wifi works every bit as reliably as your hardwired version.
@DoubleTFishing
@DoubleTFishing Год назад
Being an “old man” myself I understand but working in and around process controls at a major refinery for the last 23 years in the Reliability department we see far less problems and higher reliability from Ethernet and fiber than any wireless communication technologies. It has gotten better in recent years but we don’t allow any wireless signals to control critical equipment operations due to intermittent interference problems. That’s just my opinion obviously a chartplotter would not be in the same discussion until they start using it to control navigation and engine safety systems

The UHD2 will not WiFi to a older model like the Echomap Ultra. You have to use a network cable.

On black Friday sale I got echomap ultra 106sv for 800+ tax. It was 999.99 then with my bass pro card I got another 200 off plus $42 in club points which is basically cash. It did come with gt54 but I ordered the gt56 last week for $365. It was an incredible deal! I'm super happy with it!!! I'll b adding the lvs34 system soon.

@@DoubleTFishing oh I am. I've watched ton of videos in past & side& down imaging is better than I was expecting. I can only imagine how much better the gt56 will be. Hopefully I'll have it next couple days & test it out
@Stonehorn
@Stonehorn Год назад
You would have been absolutely fine with the 54, upgrading to the 56 is mostly a waste, it’s only slightly better. I have both, and use both, you really, really didn’t need the 56. If you had no 3in1 transducer, I would recommend the 56over the 54 for sure, but an upgrade? Its more of a sidegrade. It does a few things better, but nothing a new user is going to notice. Should have saved that transducer money fora future livescope addition.
@maxcole3930
@maxcole3930 Год назад
@@Stonehorn I already have an lvs34 system & a steady cast heading sensor. Nothing else I would want or upgrade to besides the 56. I agree the 54 is still pretty good in shallow water. But I can definitely tell a difference with the gt56 over the 54. I see much more details in bottom structure, rock, submerged trees & grass & fish. For the price I paid it was well worth the upgrade to 56. & I have the 54 for a backup if I ever damaged my 56. It's an awesome set up on my hobie kayak for sure! Very happy with all of it!

Solid video, Rick. You can now get the UHD 93sv for $750, while the UHD2 93sv is $1200. Do you think the $450 difference is worth it for the UHD2? The resolution (60%more!) would be the most important upgrade for me. Thanks!
@DoubleTFishing
@DoubleTFishing Год назад
They are not apples to apples, the discounted UHD comes with a GT54 transducer which is plenty capable but not as crisp/clear or powerful as the GT56 that comes with the UHD2. The GT56 transducer itself costs $370-$450. A normal 93SV with a GT56 transducer is the same price as the UHD2 bundle, looks like a phase out by Garmin maybe?
@TonyZeitgeist
@TonyZeitgeist Год назад
@@DoubleTFishing thanks for the quick response. I see a couple places with the UHD 93sv with the GT56 transducer for $750 (see GPS Store or Hodges Marine). Can even find the UHD 93sv with the GT56 transducer for $793 on Amazon. Seems like the price on the UHD 93sv with the GT56 has really come down. Just wondering if the UHD2 93sv is worth the additional $400-$450 (assuming both have the same transducer). Thanks!
@twmooney
@twmooney Год назад
@@TonyZeitgeist I decided to go with the UHD2 93sv over the previous model. The previous model and GT56 transducer was $860 at tackldirect. I elected to spend a little extra, get the Navionics+, the faster processor, the increased resolution, and WIFI capability. The increase in resolution is nearly double the pixels. That’s huge on a unit of this size.
@TonyZeitgeist
@TonyZeitgeist Год назад
@@twmooney Thanks for your thoughts! I'm leaning toward the UHD2 as well, particularly because of the increased resolution. I figured in a year or two, I won't miss the extra money spent, but I would feel regret if the older UHD started to feel outdated.

There is an issue with the UHD2 93sv and Garmin ActiveCaptain. The unit registers correctly on their side, but information isn’t being sent back to the unit correctly. It’s a known issue and they’re working on. Additionally, the charts listed on the unit is shown as US Lakes and Rivers BUS009R, but it is indeed Navionics+. You can’t update the charts until they get this issue resolved. Hope this helps. Just installed one on my Bonafide SS127 and hope to get it wet soon.

I have to decide between the uhd 93sv on sale for around 700 or the uhd2 93sv for 1200. Gonna have to make a decision by summer
@DoubleTFishing
@DoubleTFishing Год назад
They come with different transducers, the original unit on sale comes with a GT54 whereas the 9” UHD2 comes with a GT56. Personally I use the GT54 which is a good transducer but has depth and distance limitations (20%) and not as sharp an image as the GT56 but for me bass fishing in 10-50 ft of water it work fine for me. Russel Marine and MG Marine Tech both have good comparison videos between the two transducers. This video may be of interest to you for making the decision if you want livescope, depends allot on your type of fishing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qn9thYqEcr0.html

Hello, the amount of units from different producers are just overwhelming. I have been thinking to get unit with chart plotter features, that can be used two small boats and in ice fishing during winters (so portable unit). Is UHD2 suitable for this? Been pondering between Hummingbird Helix 7 and this unit.
@DoubleTFishing
@DoubleTFishing Год назад
Yes the UHD2 would work well. The only consideration in your situation is attachment. The UHD2 has a fixed swivel bracket and cradle the unit plugs into. From my experience having additional mounting equipment for each location is ideal or building a self contained portable station like I did for my kayak works great. Take into consideration the “sale” version of the UHD2 may not be ultra high definition but newer versions have great features.

You might consider looking for the original ECHOMAP UHD model. They are really good and reasonably priced. A 93SV at BPS is $697. You get the older transducer GT54 which is what I use, the resolution is lower and GPS antenna is not as good as the newer UHD2 but they are a great chartplotter for the price. The “3” in 93SV means the maps are US lakes, not sure where you are fishing www.basspro.com/shop/en/garmin-echomap-uhd-93sv-fishfinderchartplotter-combo?hvarAID=shopping_googleproductextensions&ds_e=GOOGLE&ds_c=BPS%7CShopping%7CSmart%7CBoating%7CGeneral%7CNAud%7CNVol%7CNMT&gclid=CjwKCAjwyqWkBhBMEiwAp2yUFv6qNAR17nSBJa4attAsec3ZnCuEXQG9r-SGm5aEmxsRXYbRtgQHmBoCxr0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Would you get real UHD through the use of a 8 to 4 pin adapter? I ordered a uhd2 74cv with a 4 pin gt20 because of a sale. Is there even a 8 pin uhd transducer compatible?

I’m not sure, might be one of the first UHD2 models that was only on the market for a short time. I’d call support at 800 800-1020 and use the call back option, normally takes about 30 minutes and they will build a cart with what you need and send it to your email, thanks for watching!!

@DoubleTFishing
@DoubleTFishing Год назад
Hi Andy, the maps don’t actually have all the details loaded. If you have a gps signal or connect to your active captain phone app it should prompt you to download the section of the map your in to get the details. It threw me off the first time, make sure you synch up to active captain and get your map up to date if it’s brand new. Holler back if you still have problems
@DoubleTFishing
@DoubleTFishing Год назад
Hey Andy I’m not near my chartplotter but I pulled my active captain app and went to a new lake to simulate it. It doesn’t actually prompt you to download, I clicked the top right button on the map screen (3 horizontal lines) and went down to “download” to get the details. I don’t remember exactly where the download button is on the chartplotter screen
