The Garmin 130 Plus bolsters the bottom end of Garmin's range. It's more of an evolution than a revolution, but the new device picks up features that increase its versatility whilst retaining those that made its predecessor, the Edge 130 so popular. Here's Rupert's review of Garmin's smallest device.

got it. Love it. replaced 15 year old 500. just a quick clarification: It comes with a mount that works fine on a typical stem, but I agree, an out-front mount is a big improvement.

I have enjoyed my Garmin 130 for the past three years, and the Connect app is useful enough for me to track my ride data. I've only gotten lost once but I just used my phone to get my bearings and that got me back on track. Also, my 130 sits on the handlebars right next to the stem, and it works for me. It's good to know I can get the 130 Plus now and have a familiar interface to work with.

Good detailed review but surprising to see you comparing it to the 830/1030 rather than the 530. Highlighting the differences to the next model up would surely be more useful as that's the trade-off many will be considering - especially as the 530 has the features you highlight as missing from the 130+. I imagine you get direction from Garmin on such matters (who may not want folk searching for deals on the 'older' 530 with colour screen better mapping and a mount) but that undercuts the value of CW as a resource for useful information.

I have had a Garmin Edge 500 since 2010 and it still works perfectly EXCEPT it no longer is recognized by my computer. Not sure why and I have done all the usual things with Windows and Garmin support to get it recognized again. Nope. So, I have done some online shopping and it looks like this Edge 130 Plus is the ticket for me. Interestingly, aside from the button layout, the physical device appears to be exactly the same as the 500. Finally, I want to thank Rupert for this review. Quite honestly it was incredibly well done. Well organized, fast paced and very, very informative. Well done young man!

@palicar
@palicar 2 года назад
@@Fromatic I was unimpressed with the 530 map because it shows roads only on a close zoom and I had to watch it closely or I’d miss a turn. Zoom out and the smaller roads disappear. I’ve been using the 130 for a while now and it is a great little computer. It does all I need it to as I know where I ride intimately and should I get into a spot of bother, I’ve always got my phone with me. It’s a shame about the outfront mount as that is an additional £20! It paired with all my sensors easily and I really can’t see why I’d need the plus version over the basic 130. If I needed more functionality, I’d go for the 530 I think... if I was sticking with Garmin...

@richcrompton6891 3 года назад
@@jimdennison I foolishly forgot to stop it the other day and it was still recording 138 hours later! 🤣 it was recoding nothing though as I’d turned it off. It was only when I decided to use it today and then downloaded the ride it popped up on Strava! My short 25km ride had the worst av speed I’ve ever posted at 0.1kmh🤣. On a more serious note though, I’ve not tried to use it for a 7hr ride, but it lasts for well over a week of hour plus rides. More like 12hrs. If it’s anything like my garmin watch. They knob up the battery life each time they update and then it settles down for some reason?! I’m not likely to do any 7hr plus rides any time soon though, so I’ll just charge it when I need to.

This is an amazing little device. An update to enhance the maps would be good, there's a bit more detail they could squeeze out of that little screen. I use the maps feature but with Google maps on my phone mounted to the stem. It lets you turn off the phone screen and just let Google Maps speak the directions. Also I paid £120 new but you can get them for just under £100 new if you hunt around.

Battery 🔋 life isn’t good if you don’t leave the light 💡 on in the winter ❄️ months, with live tracking on and connected to a power meter, heart ❤️ rate monitor and radar detector. I do find the climb 🧗‍♀️ feature particular useful when you upload a route. It lets you prepare yourself for those climbs especially when you don’t like climbing. I say excellent money 💵 for what you are getting.

OK beginner questions. What is The third party app and why do I need one? Does it work by itself? What about the sensors and what sensors do I have to get and do any come with it? How do they expect you to mount it if the don't provide one? Do I need to use my phone and carry my phone with me? Does it have it's own map? Ride types, how do they differ? What is galleo or glownass, never ever heard of them? WOW $250 Canadian (on special on Amazon plus shipping) for an entry level device, 25% of the cost of my bike.
@marcdavidson3676
@marcdavidson3676 3 года назад
Hi Drew, I will attempt to answer most of your questions: 1. A third party app is something like Strava which allows you to measure speed, distance, and other data.. You can even compare your speed on a given route with other users. 2. Yes, this computer as Rupert stated is designed to work by itself, but it is easier to setup via your phone through a special app from Garmin. 3. In order to receive certain kind of data like cadence, power, and heart rate you will need to have sensors that can communicate with your device through either bluetooth or ant+ 4. Whilst they don't provide an out front mount, they do provide handlebar/stem mounts 5. You don't need to use your phone for this particular Garmin device, but their are other devices where you do. 5, Glonass, Galileo, and GPS are all satellite standards. The first is from Russian, the second is from the European Union, and the third is from the USA. They basically allow your device to do navigation. You want a device to be able to do all three for best results. 6. Finally, a decent bike compute that utilizes navigation is going to cost at lease $150. Lezyne has some of the least expensive devices. You should check them out as well as Wahoo.
@drewcama5481
@drewcama5481 3 года назад
@@marcdavidson3676 Thanks Marc. So on it's own it has gps navigation and speed and distance but nothing else? I've actually been thinking about getting something for 3 years now. I think the lack of a map is a pro. Way too many squiggly lines. I even removed the maps from my Elemnt Bolt. Way better. All I need to know is when to take a turn. If I am really lost I will whip out my phone and look at a proper map. (or ask someone :-)) 12 hours is a bit low though for an all-day ride. (but a powerbank should fix that).

I’m enjoying the bike so far ru-vid.comUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
