Here's your complete Garmin Edge 840 In-Depth review, based on tons of testing. I dive into everything you need to know - good and bad! Buy the Garmin Edge 840 here (amzn.to/3t7KqcS), link helps support the channel, much appreciated!!!
However, the changes go far beyond just sunny-side-up or not. In fact, arguably, the solar piece is really the least important change. Here’s all the new things:
- Edge 840 has BOTH touchscreen and full button set (previously only had partial button set)
- Added multiband/dual-frequency GPS
- Added solar panels for Edge 540/840 Solar editions
- Added USB-C connection for charging/sync
- Made it slightly chubbier to accommodate solar panels (non-Solar edition is also same new dimensions)
- Completely revamped the user interface everywhere (matches Edge 1040)
- Added Power Guide race/training pacing feature
- Added ClimbPro Free-Ride mode, which automatically triggers ClimbPro without a route
- Added Climb Explorer dashboard for finding nearby climbs
- Added Connect IQ Widget Glances to Homepage/Dashboard
- Added Training Status 2.0
- Added full automatic race/event suggested workouts using a periodized/phased daily plan leading up to event, inclusive of any Garmin wearable data shifts (e.g., automatically reducing planned workout if you got no sleep on a redye flight)
- Added Course Demands to compare course features to ride needs
- Added Real-Time Stamina to show energy/distance/duration left during workout
- Added Location Search Widget
- Added ‘Recent Finds’ from navigation panel (so things you recently searched for)
- Added new ‘Bike Shops’ & ‘Water Stops’ categories for navigation search (and completely re-did other categories to mostly get rid of auto stuff)
- Added Post-Ride ClimbPro Splits on device
- Added re-scheduling of primary workouts
- Added support race/event driven Daily Suggested Workouts (expanded from initial Edge 1040 launch)
- Added paired sensor information to summary page (even for non-Garmin sensors)
- Added support for Shimano STEPS sensor type (eBike component)
- Added new consolidated post-ride Highlights screen with PRs
- Added estimated battery remaining when toggling Battery Saver mode
- Added manual WiFi sync all button (a ‘do it now’ option, but removed single-ride upload option)
- Added phone-based config of data fields/data pages
- Added ability to use phone for typing text on Edge
- Added ability to manually transfer sensors and device profiles to Edge from phone at any time (not just first setup)
- Added Garmin Connect IQ App Store on-device marketplace
- Changed nearby POI/Things search to be virtually instant
- Far faster route calculation/recalculation times
- Increased ClimbPro coloring to show more gradient definition
- Now automatically changes map popularity type to match activity (I.e., Road vs MTB)
- Changed screen background default from black to white for improved “readability”
- Removed horrifically unreliable duplicate Bluetooth pairing process for phones
- Removed Varia Vision sensor support
- Removed device transfer (sharing between units)
- Same 2.6” touchscreen size/resolution as before, however, Garmin says it has improved contrast ratio and color filters
- Weight is 90g for Edge 840 solar (up from 80g for Edge 830)
- Battery life up to 48 hours non-solar, 78 hours solar. Up to 34 hours with Multi-Band GPS mode with Solar (battery chart lower down)
- Simplified Bluetooth phone pairing to single connection (versus previous dual legacy BT and BT smart)
Additionally, while this is offered on the Edge units, it came much later, but it is still present on the newer units, and wanted to call it out:
- Paired sensor transfer from existing Garmin Edge units
- Activity Profile settings transfer from existing Garmin Edge units
But, let's jump into the video instead!

One thing that irks me a little about my 530 is the way it panics and says "make a U turn" (even if that would be a dumb thing to do) when I go off course. I'm glad they've addressed that with some options.
@scottsland99
@scottsland99 Год назад
I'm really out on the whole solar charging. The gains are just so small (especially in places like the UK) and the use case so limited that I don't know how you justify the extra cost for a dimmer screen. Seems pointless to me.
@marcwanagas1234

It depends where you train and race. The UK or points north, probably not much gain. The American SW or Kona… it’s a decent bump

The battery life is so long already that I just don't see the point personally. I think for me when it would start to benefit me is when the device gets to end of life and I'm nearly using the whole battery in a single ride like I currently am with my Edge 820, but at at that point I'd rather have had that extra $100 to put to a new device. I'm sure it is a good option for some but in my use case at least I can't justify it.

I have the Fenix solar and I agree it's not worth it on that. Not enough area and it's under sleeves etc. I can imagine that an out front bike computer could work. It's amazing how much power a solar roof panel can generate - so you don't need much here.

Great review, will be moving up from my 530 onto the 840 especially after yr observation on the 540 clunkiness. I’m wondering if Garmin at this stage held a little back on the 540’s s/w interface to push more people up to the 840, or maybe I’m thinking they’re smarter than they are. Either way, thanks again DC 💯

@JMCyclingVideos
@JMCyclingVideos Год назад
@@borasumer For the 840 in particular, buttons. Cycling ability, climb pro anywhere, climb explorer, USB-C, new UI. The new course demands and power guide features will be really beneficial for me as a racer as well so I can do additional course scouting especially for races where I haven't been before or have much time to recon. But, in the end, what matters to me may not matter for you.

I need to buy a cycling computer before the start of may. Do you think it would be better to simply buy the 830 which is cheaper and widely available, or hunt for the 840 and pay more. Most beneficial feature for me in the 840 would be the USB-C charging.
@JMCyclingVideos
@JMCyclingVideos Год назад
@@emmamariapaarson9671 Hard to say without knowing your needs. If you want a set it and forget it computer that just records your rides, there are plenty of options way cheaper than even the 830. I have and use the 530 currently and really enjoy it. The only difference with the 830 is the touch screen and other than setting it up and starting it, there isn't much need for using the touchscreen unless you're digging in to the more in-depth features. My daughter has a 130+ and it's a great computer for just basic use without navigation capabilities.
@emmamariapaarson9671
@emmamariapaarson9671 Год назад
@@JMCyclingVideos I definitely need navigation, I've also heard that there's a difference between the 530 and 830 where the 530 doesn't automatically reroute if you go off route. I was going to buy the 830 as it was perfect for my needs, but now that the 840 is out, maybe I should get that. Because in a longer-term view, the 840 would be overall newer while in 4 years, the 830 would already be 8 yrs old. So I think I would need to replace the 830 sooner if I was to get that. Thought decision here...

840 Conventional Without Solar was my final choice. I charge my unit regularly and won't miss solar charging. For the extra money I got the accessory sensor package. Garmin Edge logic to me is weird but I want the DI2 integration on the computer. Best of both worlds, my Karoo 2 (better screen) and now the 840. Apps on the iphone during rides Cyclemeter, iCardio and Shimano E-Tube Ride (which shows dI2 data and is getting better). Measure to motivate! Keeps me focused. Did I really need the 840? Not really. I like the size as the 1040 was too big. I'm keeping the 840. Garmin is pricey but some things are worth the money like my Rally RS 200 Power Pedals. It's so much more rewarding knowing the numbers after each ride.

Reading the comments here about how ineffective the solar charging is. I agree from my experience with a 955 solar, but I’ll add… this seems to be Garmin in nutshell. Their training algorithms are also just a shiny feature to get you excited and by the time you realize it’s pointless (or just wrong) it’s too late to return your device.
@ostatnifazownikjelcynogrod8834
Did they improve navigation re-routing after skipping or missing waypoints? It's the only thing that drives me crazy using my 830 - there is no configurable option to treat waypoints less strictly in order to allow more flexibility when you want to take another route or just shorten a ride a little bit. In most cases, it stubbornly forces you to get to the missed waypoint eventually.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker Год назад
It depends on what's considered a 'Waypoint'. Basically, if you just tap-tap-tap created a route in Strava/Garmin/Komoot/whatever, then in the new system it'll give you the overlay for Re-Join/etc and then just do it's own dance if you ignore it. Last night for example I was running a bit late to pickup the kids from a ride, so I ended up shortening it, by cutting off a giant 15KM loop (I then took about a 10KM route instead, sorta like the opposite side of a lollipop route), and it seemed mostly OK with it. It didn't try and get me to go the other way.

Can the Garmin Edge 840 be used while its charging from its USB port? For while out on the bike, and it needs charging via a power bank.

I'd like to know if the touch screen has been improved. I'd assume it's the same as the 1040 now. The touch on the old 830 was not very good. Solar is such a gimmick! It's super hard to run out of battery on my 1040. I'm glad I did not go for the solar version. On my Fenix 7, I don't even notice the solar at all.

Is it possible to turn off the annoying low phone battery alert? Basically old unit slightly revamped I’m using my 530 really no reason to upgrade when it’s time to get a new one it will be anything but another garmin. At some point the screen turn green and blue and very dim eventually. I opened the unit and the connector was loose I pressed it on and voilà the screen was working again. Too bad I cracked it when opening the unit but replacement is cheap on Ali.

Sorta. That's true. But ClimbPro also works offroad too. The focus right now is more heavily road/gravel, so there are some shorter sub-500m long climbs that hurt on MTB that won't show up. But otherwise climbs will show up.

How long until we get an OLED one? Looks great on the watches and this would be a great use-case.
@kayy-03
@kayy-03 Год назад
I don't see any benefit there for a bike headunit. OLED still tends to drain the battery faster, solar + OLED is way more difficult, the visibility in sunlight tends to be worse. I love the way my Forerunner 265 screen looks, but the higher resolution and better colours wouldn't really benefit you on the bike

Very tempted to upgrade.. I am still on my 11 year old Edge 500 of which the battery has become very unpredictable. I don't use a powermeter/HR meter anymore (no more races/hard training but mostly casual riding, 200k a week or so). The shiny new 840 with the possiblity to even navigate to a address from the device itself looks great.. But might be more than I need. Anyone here would know a good (cheaper) alternative? Does not neccesarily have to be Garming

@@TheLazyGarden3r i didn’t found it cheaper (yet) but according to ray’s pricelist (this video) the 1040 is in pounds cheaper than 840 (solar). In euro/dollars it’s more expensive, but weirdly enough not in pounds; in that case i would pick the 1040 over the 840 solar. But i guess that’s UK only.

I was thinking about getting the Edge 840 because of the touch screen, along with the fact that it appears that Garmin has really engineered the new interface to work well with touch screen. However, if its easy to update the Edge 540 though the phone app, does it really make a big difference to have the 840? Is the Edge 540 sufficient due to the phone app?
@drunkgirls111
@drunkgirls111 Год назад
Getting an 840 depends how much you think you'll be interacting with the touch screen while riding, for example will your navigate a lot to POI spots using the map then 840 is better, are you ok with having smudges on the screen while riding? 840 is better. 540 buttons are good but navigating and finding POI spots is clunky. Depends what you like and value more touch screen vs physical buttons.

Hey Ray, considering your recent high training load, how do you feel Garmin’s suggested training plan/workouts compare to that? I’ve been checking this feature on my Fenix every now and then and constantly find that Garmin’s suggested workouts seem to be way shorter and don’t suggest the same duration as my actual training plan does at any moment. Your screenshots seem to suggest similar, shortish rides @ 11:55 Curious to know more about that, as this new feature might be a game changer for me and a reason to upgrade from an 830 to the 840. Thanks!
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker Год назад
It's a bit hard to say because the two kinda 'fight' against each other, in the sense that I'm doing high volumes across swim/bike/run, and the Edge/Fenix seem to be a bit confused by that multi-sport approach and trying to get me to simmer down. That said, I think in general it seems a bit low, but that may be because it's constantly trying to get me back into a recovered state.
