My Garmin 550 started to develop grey (gray)horizontal lines along the top part of the screen.
I decided it was the backlight as I could turn it down in full sunlight and it would be OK. My guess was replacing the top glass Digitiser would not be the repair I needed to ordered a full LCD on ebay from Hong Kong.
It arrived within a month and was a direct replacement for my unit (it even had the logo on it).
After changing the LCD I dismantled the old one (carefully) and noticed the Mylar backlight film was displaced.
I show this at the end of the video.
I think that was the culprit but I will not be in a hurry to pull it apart again just to test a hunch. I will happen when I need it. (maybe never).
This video should apply to most of the garmin 400 to 500 series of GPS.

Hello I have a Garmin 450t and practically after about three months from the purchase I do not see + the compass cursor the beautiful one the Red arrow, I don't know if I mean ... What can it depend on, when I click the compass I don't see the arrow, I only see the compass and it works fine. When I bought it I could see it very well every time I clicked the compass, now not + and I did the reset but nothing ... I ask you why I see that you understand a lot, ciaooooe thanks ....

The compass Red pointer will only be visible if you have set your GPS to GOTO a place. You must also have satellites locked on the screen. So go outside and make sure it sees the sky for at least 10 minutes while turned on. The bottom of the main screen will show a green bar rather than red. Next step. Put your GPS into the map page, tap anywhere on the screen so a red dot pops up. A rectangular shape up the top of the screen appears. Tap on that and then a new screen shows up. Tap the green button and choose direct or automobile ( that option can be set in another setup). Tap the X at the bottom left. Tap compass. You should see the arrow. It only points when you are navigating in GOTO with satellites locked..as far as I know but I will look into it more. You can also check your compass settings by going to Setup, Heading, GOTO line pointer, choose Large( that sounds like your one). Then exit out of that. You may find your problem is that you are inside so your GPS can't see the satellites. Start with that first. It has to know where it is to be able to know where you want to go. I hope I answered what you were wanting to find. You can also go to Garmin site and download the user manual and print it out. It may be helpful.
