Great video! I've been using my Striker Plus 4CV for a couple summers now. Mostly trial and error to learn what everything means and does. These vids have been super helpful in learning a LOT of info about things I've been seeing, or NOT seeing the last few seasons! Thanks again!
Hello! Congrats for the channel, i learn a lot every day! Just waiting for the part 2 explanation! Btw, have one question.. is it normal i see my jigging bait working only shallow water? I always see it until about 7 meters (about 12 feets). More deeper bait desappear (my gain is on med-aut) and i using 77khz frequence. Tried to set gain to high (90%).. and i could see my bait working, but also i got too much interference on the deep screen (a lot of huge red spots).. its impractical.. So, its normal this sonar get my bait (vertical fishing) only a 12 feet ? Im afraid maybe my sonar have a inssue.. week signal.. dunno
When vertical jigging and wanting to see your bait, there are always tradeoffs considering you are trying to watch a bait that may be 3" or so on a screen from over 12ft down in water. Water clarity can also have a huge impact on your success as well...dirty water it is much harder to see do to the increases needed in your gain, which will show more noise. Then again it is possible that your bait had drifted outside your transducers cone as well, which is easy to have happen with wind or current. I would guess your gear is working just fine, and judging by what you have already tried, you have a good idea what you are doing in your adjustments. I would stay with it and find the best balance, but it will likely be a compromise.
@@1Cast1Fish thru my rear most scupper hole. Plan on getting the yak attack blade to permanently mount it. The water was 20 feet while not paddling but as soon as I started paddling it was going crazy
My guess is that in that mounting location, when the kayak moves (you paddle) it is causing turbulence in the water around the transducer. Also be sur ethe transducer is below the water line while paddling.
picked up a garmin 4 vivid....had come across your course pre purchase and was one of the deciding factors in my purchase decision....two thumbs up on your instructional videos, its is so nice for a change to get the most out of a piece of equipment. ..your site is saved and ill be using it as a reference, I consider it my Garmin Encyclopedia. Two thumbs up!
Thank you so much for this tutorial on this particular fish finder. It looks like perfectly what I want but I have one question I can't seem to find out. My boat doesn't even have an electrical system. It's rope start. So I need this to be battery. And I found out that it is. But here's the kicker.... Does it run on double AA's or is it rechargeable? Doesn't seem like nobody is giving that information. Once again thank you because you still was very informative and did a fantastic job with this tutorial.
I reset mine to factory settings the other day. I wanted to see the “Arches” for fish instead of the fish symbols. I turned fish symbol off and didn’t see any arches at all but yet it still beeped for fish it was picking up? I was trolling for trout at 1.5-2.8 mph with my outboard and no arches anywhere?? Do you have to turn it on somewhere?
Traditional sonar will show the bottom depth and also any fish ...you can also use the fish symbols to show fish...the fish symbol options even have a selection that will show a fish icon and the depth of the fish above it on the screen
Is the bottom really big...like taking up most of the screen? If this is the case, set your depth scale to auto....it may have been changed accidently.
Which frequency do you use most of the time? I think the split may be too crowded, wondering which one is more useful MOST of the time -- 77 or 200? thanks!
Most likely the sandy bottom will be softer unless it is layed over a harder substrate underneath the sand. The weed beds will show just above the bottom return....the best way to describe it would be look for thicker "noise" just above the bottom.
@@1Cast1Fish oh ok..every time I use when I already set and stop then start fishing..after 20 seconds the settings that I already set automatically back to menu..i just buy last two weeks..
I may have missed it, but in case you did not cover it, how do you find the thremocline on the Striker 4 (no chirp)? Thanks, cool videoes, great job on all.
I did not cover this topic yet, but I do get asked alot about it...so I need to discuss it in a video. You can see the thermocline with the Garmin Striker...however what a lot of don't realize is that in many lakes depending on the time of year and other variables a distinct thermocline may not actually be present. A thermocline generally will show up as a area of "noise" in a line somewhere within the water column across the fish finder screen (not top or bottom noise). The thing to remember is that since it will show up as a noise signature normally, you want to be careful about setting your noise removal setting to high, as it can remove the thermocline as well. Hope this helps
Hey man... thanks for these videos...I totally appreciate it. I have been doing some practicing with my garmin while watching. Helps when I'm at the lake.
Thanks for these. Very informative and as a technical communication specialist myself, I applaud how carefully planned, informative, and detailed these are. You must have been an instructional designer in a past life (or current!)
enjoyed the video and looking forward to more, could you go more in depth on going to waypoint i seem to have trouble getting back to mark spot, usually takes me a while once i get there to find it by the screen.
I will be going over waypoints here soon...I am finishing up class #5 now...and will start into waypoint stuff in either 6 or 7....I also have a few videos on waypoints that may help
i have a dumb question: For the fish icons, what size do the icons represent in real life? for example: small = 4" fish, Med = 12" fish , Large icon = 16" ?
You know that's a good question, that is not covered anywhere...I really don't have an answer for you either as they are not really meant to represent fish of a certain size....I think its a generalization
@@1Cast1Fish thank you for the time to answer!! Appreciate all your tutorials. I spent all day yesterday watching them in order to get familiar with my striker 4 plus!
Thats awesome, learning how to use the fish finder for more than just temp and depth is critical to catching more fish and understanding what is beneath the waters surface. Sorry I could not help more on the fish size question.
thank you so much for clearing this up for me . your the best i was going to by a fish finder that i can understand cause this one was using was so confusing- but it wasn't the fish finders fault it was mine thank you
The only time I have had interference issues is if the power cables are near other power sources and cables....and then it is even dependent on how strong the signals are.
@@1Cast1Fish ok man thanks! And thanks for the videos. I come home every day since I got my garmin 4 plus and sit down with my fish finder and watch 1 to 2 Vids. I appreciate you for the help
Once you watch this whole series, you will have been through every menu and feature, so you are definitely doing your part to learn....good lucj out there and awesome to see others use their fishfinder as more than an expensive depth gauge :)
I am an absolute sonar beginner and bought my Garmin Striker yesterday and will install it now on my boat. Thanks to your videos many things come clear and I start to learn the right using of the device. Thanks! Great Job!
Yes sir but it was cause boat was out of water when I was trying to make some adjustments I’m good now but would not have been had I not watched your series on the stryker
I've used my Striker 4 five times now. Is it safe to say when the fishfinder is in fish symbol mode there is only one size fish symbol? If so then the second option down with the bubbles would give me a large or small arch along with the fish symbol to indicate the size of the fish. In the pure fish symbol mode, which I tried, a four inch fish and a 24 inch fish have the same size fish symbol. Thanks, and thanks for the scroll speed info. I had mine on fast while trolling at 1.5 mph and my arches were very flat.
Okay, let me correct myself. There are different size pure fish symbols which I figured out by playing around on the simulator. On real water I was fooled into thinking all fish symbols were the same size because I was trolling shallow water(mostly 10 to 15 feet) with the 200khz, 15 degree setting which was too narrow and only showed me small creek chubs. I changed the settings to 77khz for a wider 45 degree angle in the 30 feet or less water that I troll in. I got it.
Glad you got it figured out...here is a video I did awhile ago explaining the fish symbols a bit. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gP7AVbk6FUI.html
Scroll speed is a common thing to cause the arch's to be "wrong" in peoples view....most of the issues we have are self inflicted with our settings choices.
Another awesome video! Thank you! Any chance you could do a video on what it looks like to get false reads? I did a hull transducer mount on my Kayak following your instructions using duct seal. I get a good readout, and occasionally I get a break in the floor and it beeps and shows fish. It will do this for an extended amount of time, then go back to working normal. Would you suggest I remount it? Is this common? Any help or guidance is tremendously appreciated!
@@1Cast1Fish Thanks for the reply! So it goes from a very clear read of depth (it’s pretty shallow usually around 4 to 5 feet, to constant beeps (fish) but the fish are showing up well below the depth line. It’s almost as if the floor just stops and it shows fish, hundreds of them, most sometimes at 15 to 20 feet below (this lake is 8 at it’s very deepest) Sometimes it snaps out of it and goes back to picking up the bottom, other times it goes back to normal after turning it off, then back on. I switched to clearvu and that was just black. It can’t possibly be fish, the way it reads, and this lake was drained about 10 years ago, so I’m certain there aren’t any deep holes with that sort of drop off with hundreds of fish! Water temp, GPS, and depth seem to be accurate, it’s just this weird occurrence. Transducer is in the sealed front hatch, but far back enough to always be below the waterline. Do you suggest I try and remount my transducer in the duct seal, before reaching out to Garmin? Curious if that’s what a bad read looks like. I’d really appreciate you insights, your videos are what led me to purchase this unit!
@@garyworkman7317 Well it shouldn't be doing that, so the reading is messed up (due to something). I would definitely try remounting it to rule that out. Another thing would be do you have the fish ID on? maybe turn it off. Again if these don't work try a factory reset... and test it
With spring to do lists it has been busy...but finishing up on #5 tonight...so should be posted up for Saturday. Some really good stuff in this next one that took a bit of extra time...hope you enjoy.
I just watched all four of your videos. They were so informative I went to Basspro to purchase one on sale. Now they tell me they were on clearance and not being restocked.
Boat speed is a readout that can be in the upper left corner of the screen. If it is not there, you can go to the readout menu and select it to show. If you can not find it, let me know. Just repost as a new comment so I get the notification and can reply.
@@1Cast1Fish other than the vivid having the 7 color choices and the clearvu menu, the rest of the menu features is predominantly the same as the original and plus I suspect
@@1Cast1Fish what split frequency would you use with the vivid cv, predominantly 10-30ft river/lake, and max offshore 60ft sea. Traditional: 50/77/200 kHz CHIRP (mid and high) ClearVü: 260/455/800 kHz
I would start with 77kHz Chirp and 800kHz for Clear Vu...but depending on your image 455kHz may work better for ClearVu....the 800 is just a bit better resolution, so I would start there first with those depths.
My Friend you are awesome. I just bought this on Amazon on sale for 105 dollars. Its my first time with a fish finder and I was totally lost and thought about sending it back. Garmin should have your link on their site as your tutorials are awesome for beginners.
